Martyr Raed Saad: 4 Key Milestones
Martyr Commander Raed Saad stood as a
towering figure in the landscape of Palestinian military action. His experience
was forged at the center of major strategic shifts, with a role that evolved in
tandem with escalating confrontations and widening theaters of engagement.
Bridging the gap between the battlefield
and command centers, Saad amassed extensive expertise that placed him at the
nexus of military decision-making. He became one of the most influential
commanders within the hierarchy of the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of
the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).
Four Key Milestones in the
Life of Martyr Commander Raed Saad
1. A First-Generation Commander
Born in Gaza City on August 15, 1972, Raed Saad belonged
to the first generation of Al-Qassam Brigades commanders who rose to prominence
with the outbreak of the Second Palestinian Intifada in 2000. During that
pivotal period, Saad was instrumental in reorganizing military ranks and
restructuring field units, laying the groundwork for a new era of organized
operations within the Brigades.
Since 2003, Saad served as a member of
the Al-Qassam Military Council. Known for his close ties to Commander-in-Chief Mohammed Deif,
he was a fixture in strategic planning and decision-making circles during
critical years of the resistance's evolution.
2. Assassination Attempts and Relentless
Pursuit
Saad was a perpetual target for
Zionist intelligence, surviving multiple assassination attempts over the years.
Most notably, in 2006, the Zionist Air Force launched a strike targeting a
meeting of the Al-Qassam Military Council. While Saad survived the bombardment,
his name remained at the top of the most-wanted lists ever since, identified as
one of the organization’s most influential military minds.
3. From Gaza Brigade Command to the
Operations Branch
Throughout his military career, Saad
assumed a series of high-profile command positions. Foremost among them was
leading the Gaza City Brigade, before he was reportedly entrusted with the
Al-Qassam Brigades' military manufacturing portfolio, according to local media
sources.
At a later stage, Saad ascended to the
role of Head of the Operations Branch within the General Military Council a
position that underscored the deep confidence placed in his expertise and his
capacity to orchestrate complex operations. Even after these responsibilities
were later transferred to Mohammed Sinwar,
Saad remained a fundamental pillar of the movement’s military and
organizational infrastructure.
4. Role in the Current Leadership
Following the cessation of the Zionist
war, Saad returned to the forefront of the new Military Council as part of
Al-Qassam’s efforts to reorganize its ranks and rebuild infrastructure damaged
during the two-year conflict. Tasked with directing military operations, he was
widely regarded as second-in-command to Izz al-Din al-Haddad.
As the senior-most and most
experienced figure among the current military leadership, Saad possessed an
unrivaled depth of knowledge regarding the Brigades' history and operational
details. He was heavily relied upon to spearhead the revival of military and
organizational capabilities before ascending as a martyr, leaving behind a
profound legacy of experience and influence.
