Commander Mohammed Ibrahim Hassan al-Sinwar is considered one of the most prominent military figures who have shaped the security and field landscape in the Gaza Strip, and one of the top-tier leaders within the General Staff of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

He was nicknamed “the Shadow Man” and “the One Who Returned from Death” due to his central role in strategic planning and in deception operations that confused the intelligence agencies of the Israeli occupation.

Al-Sinwar, the brother of the martyred commander Yahya al-Sinwar, became known as one of the masterminds behind Operation “Shattered Illusion” in 2006, which led to the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange deal, and as one of the principal architects of Operation “Al-Aqsa Flood” on October 7, 2023.

After a long journey of jihad and resistance, Mohammed al-Sinwar was martyred, thus concluding the legacy of a commander who combined military acumen with the ability to remain out of the spotlight for decades.

Upbringing and Jihadist Journey

Mohammed al-Sinwar was born in 1975 in the Khan Younis refugee camp, to a family that was forcibly displaced from al-Majdal following the 1948 Nakba. From an early age, he became involved in the resistance movement, joining the Hamas organization in its early days, and later becoming one of the founding pillars of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades in 1991.

His early journey reflected the strength of his will, as it included long periods of imprisonment in both Israeli prisons and those of the Palestinian Authority before he managed to escape shortly before the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada in 2000.

Mohammed al-Sinwar is known as “the Shadow Man”, and due to his leadership position in the Qassam Brigades’ General Staff and his command of the Khan Younis Brigade for years, he rose to prominence as one of the chief strategists behind resistance operations. Most notably, he planned and directly supervised Operation “Shattered Illusion” in 2006, which resulted in the capture of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, leading up to the 2011 prisoner exchange deal, through which his brother Yahya al-Sinwar and hundreds of other prisoners were released.

He was nicknamed “the One Who Returned from Death” after he successfully misled the occupation in 2014, when it announced his assassination and published fake photos. He continued in his influential leadership role until Israel came to regard him as one of the masterminds behind “Al‑Aqsa Flood” and one of the most wanted figures on its assassination list.

After the martyrdom of his brother Yahya al-Sinwar in October 2024, Mohammed assumed a larger leadership role within the resistance, tasked with rebuilding and restoring its capabilities, according to Israeli intelligence reports; this increased his significance even among the “Shadow” leaders.

Announcement of Mohammed al-Sinwar’s Martyrdom

After months of uncertainty regarding his fate, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades announced on September 28, 2025, that Mohammed al-Sinwar had been martyred. The news was confirmed through a video they released, showing an attack on an Israeli site in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, in the previous August.

Israeli sources indicated that he had been assassinated in an airstrike near the European Hospital in Khan Younis on May 13, 2025, but the official announcement by the Qassam Brigades came later, also reporting the loss of another commander who had led the resistance.

The martyrdom of al-Sinwar represents further evidence of the movement’s dedication to its frontline leaders, and a reaffirmation that the path of jihad and sacrifice continues unabated in the pursuit of liberation.
