Atheism Fortress Falters (4)... Is Worship Coercion? Is Divine Punishment Cruelty?
In an era where concepts have become blurred and a culture of superficiality and skepticism prevails, existential questions emerge. These questions are reformulated in a devilish language, not in search of the truth, but rather to mock established constants. It is the duty of sound intellect to respond with justice, reason, and truth. This is because the logic of atheism practices deception and relies on the ignorance of the younger generation—the "TikTok" and "Facebook" generation—indifferent to its own flawed logic and the fragility of its suspicions.
The Text of the Fallacy
It is argued: "It is said that Allah created us to
worship Him. Imagine if I manufactured intelligent machines, granted them free
will, and then said to them: 'I have made you worship me, prostrate to me, and
be grateful for your existence. If you do not, your punishment will be an
unquenchable fire.' Is there not a form of tyranny in this assumption? Is the
demand for obedience, coupled with punishment, not a desire for glorification?
Does the Perfect Being require glorification from the imperfect creature? If my
worship adds nothing to Him, why does He insist on it to such an extent that He
makes abstaining from it a path toward eternal torment? Furthermore, how can a
sane mind accept such a scene: a Creator watching His creatures writhe in an
endless hell, while remaining happy with what He sees? As if there is euphoria
in torment, and tranquility in pain! Who then is this being who finds happiness
in perpetuating torment? Is it a Allah or a ruler who cannot tolerate disobedience?
Is the happiness derived from the pain of others nothing, but another image of
cruelty disguised in holiness?"
This fallacy addresses 6 fundamental questions, which we
answer one by one:
1. Did Allah Create Us to Worship Him Because He Needs Our Glorification?
The Answer: No.
Allah, the Almighty, is self-sufficient and independent of the
worlds. Allah Almighty says: {And Moses said, "If you should disbelieve,
you and whoever is on the earth entirely - indeed, Allah is Free of need and
Praiseworthy."} [Ibrahim 14:8], and the Almighty also says: {And whoever
disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free of need from the worlds.} [Ali 'Imran
3:97].
Worship is not for the Creator's need, but for the creature's
need. Unlike a machine, a human being is a creature with a spiritual dimension,
searching for meaning and internal consistency. Just as the body needs food,
the soul needs worship—consisting of supplication, contemplation, and
connection with the Creator.
Modern scientific studies in neuroscience—such as the research
of Andrew Newberg—prove that prayer and meditation function to calm the brain,
balance hormones, and activate areas of compassion and tolerance.
Logically speaking: If worship purifies the soul, grants
balance, and liberates one from fear and selfishness, is this cruelty or mercy?
2. Does Allah, the Almighty, Resemble a Ruler Who Cannot Tolerate Disobedience?
A human ruler consolidates his power due to his need for
strength and support. As for Allah, the Almighty, there is nothing like unto
Him; obedience does not benefit Him, nor does disobedience harm Him. Allah Almighty
says: {Whoever does righteousness - it is for
his soul; and whoever does evil - it is against it. And your Lord is not ever
unjust to [His] servants.} [Fussilat 41:46], and the Almighty
says: {Indeed, those who purchase disbelief
[in exchange] for faith - never will they harm Allah at all, and for them is a
painful punishment.} [Ali
'Imran 3:177].
Allah, the Almighty, granted man complete freedom, but
informed him of the consequences of his choice. This is just like a doctor when
he tells his patient: "If you quit cigarettes and hookah, you will
recover; if you do not, you will perish." Is the doctor a tyrant,
or a faithful advisor who wants what is best for the patient?
3. Why is the Punishment Eternal? Is This Not Cruelty?
First: Eternal residence in Hell does
not include everyone. Rather, it pertains specifically to those who recognized
the truth and rejected it out of stubbornness and arrogance. As for those who
were ignorant, erred, or did not receive the message in its entirety, they are
not treated in the same manner as the arrogant and stubborn rejector.
Second: Eternal punishment is a
consequence, not a desire. Has not the one who freely chose the path of
disbelief, polytheism, injustice, evil, corruption, atheism, and
criminality—despite the truth being clear to him—chosen the path of Hell for
himself? Allah Almighty says: {And when they
deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate.} [As-Saff 61:5].
Is it fair to equate the one who feared Allah, did good, and
elevated himself, with the one who killed, tyrannized, and spread corruption?!
Justice demands differentiation, and punishment is a branch of
this justice, not a divine desire.
4. Is There Divine Euphoria in Torment? Does Allah, the Almighty, Enjoy Torturing His Creatures?
Absolutely not. Allah Almighty says: {but My mercy encompasses all things.} [Al-A'raf 7:156], and the Almighty also says: {Indeed, Allah does not wrong the people at all, but it
is the people who are wronging themselves.} [Yunus 10:44].
Allah, the Almighty, does not rejoice in the punishment of
anyone. Rather, He rejoices in their repentance and rewards a good deed tenfold
while recording a bad deed as only one. Allah Almighty says: {What would Allah do with your punishment if you are
grateful and believe? And ever is Allah Appreciative and Knowing.} [An-Nisa
4:147].
If Allah , the Almighty, had wanted to compel them, He would
have created them forced to obey. However, freedom is a divine gift that
demonstrates human dignity.
5. Why Did Allah Almighty Link Worship with Punishment? Is This Not a Threat?
It is not a threat, but rather a sincere warning of objective
outcomes, just as you say to your son: "If you do not abide by
traffic laws, you will expose yourself to destruction."
The logic of morality and justice requires holding corrupters
and tyrants accountable. Allah Almighty says: {Then
did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be
returned?} [Al-Mu'minun
23:115]. Is holding the oppressor accountable an injustice or is it justice?!
6. If Allah Knew That Some Would Disobey Him, Why Did He Create Them?
Because the existence of evil does not invalidate the wisdom
of good. The existence of freedom inherently requires the existence of those
who choose incorrectly.
Allah Almighty provided
the intellect, conscience, messages, clear proofs, and scriptures, and left the
choice to man.
Does a university cancel exams because some students will
fail? Or does it maintain the system, rewarding the diligent and punishing the
lazy?
Allah , the Almighty, is a Merciful, Generous, Magnificent,
and Forbearing Creator, not a tyrannical ruler. His purpose is the rectitude of
man, not his humiliation.
Worship is liberation, not enslavement, and punishment is
justice, not cruelty. Allah Almighty
says: {You only worship, besides Allah,
idols, and you produce a falsehood. Indeed, those you worship besides Allah do
not possess for you [the provision of] sustenance. So seek from Allah
sustenance and worship Him and be grateful to Him. To Him you will be returned.}
[Al-'Ankabut 29:17].
