7 Ways to Raise a Future Entrepreneur
Many parents
envision a bright future for their children and often have a particular career
in mind for each of them: one will become a doctor, another an engineer, a
third a police officer, and a fourth a software developer. But have you ever
considered raising your child to become an entrepreneur?
First, let us
be clear: this is not about taking away your child's innocence or raising a
materialistic child. Rather, the goal is to nurture a spirit of adventure and
innovation, equip them with essential life skills, open their eyes to different
paths to success, and instill in them a love of hard work and a sense of
initiative.
Here is a
practical guide to helping your child develop an entrepreneurial mindset:
1.
Instill the Value of Saving
Introduce your
child to the habit of saving from an early age by giving them a piggy bank
where they can set aside a portion of their allowance. Reinforce this habit
through religious and moral teachings, such as Allah's description of His
righteous servants:
{And
those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly, but are ever,
between that, justly moderate.} [Al-Furqan 25:67]
And His
command:
{And
give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not
spend wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has
Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.} [Al-Isra 17:26–27]
2.
Develop Your Child's Financial Literacy
Help your child
understand money, how to earn it through lawful means, and the importance of
working and having a legitimate source of income. Teach them to distinguish
between needs and wants, allocate money to essential expenses, and understand
how to manage different items in a budget.
3.
Teach Them to Set Priorities and Plan Ahead
Encourage your
child to plan a daily, monthly, or yearly budget, whether to save for a summer
trip or buy a particular toy. Teach them how to manage their allowance wisely
so they can gradually develop an understanding of financial management.
4.
Involve Them in Simple Family Financial Decisions
Give your child
opportunities to participate in some family financial decisions. Ask for their
opinion on simple money-related matters and discuss their financial plans for
the future, especially if they receive a substantial amount of money.
5.
Introduce Them to Saving and Investing
Consider
opening a bank account or savings account for your child, even with a small
initial deposit, to help them understand the value of saving and investing.
Discuss age-appropriate ways to grow and invest money, helping them develop an
early understanding of how financial resources can be put to good use.
6.
Lead by Example
Be a role model
in saving, spending wisely, and setting priorities. Show your child how to
identify and create opportunities, develop the resilience needed to face
challenges, learn valuable lessons from failure, and pursue success through
ethical and sound practices.
7.
Encourage Rather Than Criticize
Avoid scolding
your child for wanting to buy something you consider trivial. What may seem
unimportant to you could be meaningful to them and reflect their own interests
and needs.
Instead,
encourage independence and provide a safe environment where they can
experiment, learn, and adapt to challenges. Try brainstorming together to find
creative financial solutions to everyday situations and explore ideas that go
beyond conventional thinking. This will help strengthen their independence and
develop their critical thinking skills.
