10 Tips for Parents with kids in school

Returning to school can be a whirlwind of emotions for parents, from excitement about new beginnings to apprehension about the challenges ahead. Allah Almighty says, “Wealth and children are the decorations of the present life.” Quran: 18:46. Thus, parents have to take extreme care for their children. To help parents navigate this transition smoothly, here are 10 pieces of advice to consider:

  1. Establish a Routine Early

Consistent routines are crucial for children's well-being and academic success. Start implementing a back-to-school schedule well in advance to ease the transition. Include bedtime routines, mealtimes, and study periods.   The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Verily Allah, most High, loves for you to perfect a good deed when you perform it.’2 Al-Albani authenticated it

  1. Communicate Openly with Your Child

Talk to your child about their feelings about returning to school. Address any concerns or anxieties they may have. Open communication fosters trust and understanding.

  1. Create a Conducive Study Space

 Designate a quiet and well-lit area in your home for your child to study. Ensure it's free from distractions and has the necessary supplies.

  1. Encourage Healthy Habits

 Emphasize the importance of healthy eating and adequate sleep. A well-nourished and rested child is better equipped to focus and learn. The Quran encourages regular work . Allah says. In Surah Luqman (Luqman): Verse 15 "O my son, establish regular prayer, and enjoin good and forbid evil, and be patient in whatever befalls you; for this is a matter of firm resolve. And do not swell with pride, for Allah does not love the arrogant and boastful."

  1. Get Involved in School Activities

 Participate in school events and volunteer opportunities. Your involvement shows your child that education is a priority and strengthens your connection with the school community.

  1. Set Realistic Expectations

 Avoid setting unrealistic goals for your child. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small, to boost their confidence.

  1. Limit Screen Time

 Excessive screen time can interfere with sleep, attention, and academic performance. Establish healthy screen time limits and monitor your child's online activities.

  1. Foster a Love of Learning

 Encourage your child to explore their interests and passions. Reading, visiting museums, and attending cultural events can ignite a lifelong love of learning.

  1. Stay Connected with Teachers

 Maintain regular communication with your child's teachers. This will help you stay informed about their progress and address any issues promptly.

  1. Celebrate Successes and Offer Support

 Acknowledge your child's efforts and achievements. Offer encouragement and support during challenging times. A positive and supportive home environment can significantly impact your child's academic success. Abu Mas’ud reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever guides someone to goodness will have a reward like one who did it.”  Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
