Social Reform Society: We continue our work to serve the community and perform our national duty

The Social Reform Society categorically denies what was claimed by a tweeter regarding the removal of its signboard, stressing the continuation of its work and tireless activity in serving the community and achieving the general goals of Kuwaiti society and enhancing the nation's immunity and strength, in accordance with the laws and regulations.

The society renews its thanks and appreciation to the political leadership that has always sponsored its activities and provided it with all support and assistance to help it serve the community, which is an authentic Kuwaiti national behavior, whose basis is in the Kuwaiti values and traditions that our fathers and grandfathers were keen on, and it is also an ongoing and wise policy of our leadership and government that always appreciates and supports national social initiatives, which is what was achieved with the society at all stages.

On this occasion, the association calls on those who seek to incite against public benefit associations that are committed to laws and regulations, and that provide great national work for the community, to desist and stop this as it is a negative behavior that seeks in vain to disrupt useful and fruitful social work.

Allah Almighty said: {As for the foam, it vanishes as scum, but that which benefits people remains on the earth} (Al-Ra`d, verse 17).

He added: Given the importance of dates in alleviating the suffering of obtaining food and the ease of carrying, storing and distributing it, Life Charity Association is launching a new campaign this month to urge those with white hands to support the project by donating dates from the charity and zakat of date farms, or donating to buy dates. You can contribute any amount or the cost of a truck or a ton of dates, stressing that Life Charity Association is keen to clean, press and package dates using the latest packaging methods, and ship them outside Kuwait; to alleviate the suffering of our needy brothers, in cooperation with charitable organizations licensed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Al-Shatti explained that the goals of the “Even with Half a Date” project include contributing to solving the problem of food shortages in many countries, supporting urgent relief efforts in the event of disasters by providing food to those affected, saving children from severe anemia due to food shortages, alleviating the suffering of poor and needy families by providing dates in homes, and facilitating the search for those eligible for date zakat for farmers. He concluded by calling on the generous people of Kuwait to support the “Even with Half a Date” project by donating on the association’s website alhyat.org, or the hotline 1844455, reminding them of the hadith of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace: “Beware of the Fire, even with half a date.”

Agreement between Mercy International and UNHCR to support displaced people in Afghanistan

Last Tuesday, at its headquarters, Mercy International signed a cooperation agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to support displaced families in Afghanistan.

Strategic Partnership

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mercy International Yahya Suleiman Al-Aqili expressed his welcome to this important partnership, noting that its main goal is to enable affected families to face life's challenges and live with dignity, while providing them with hope to endure.

Al-Aqili stressed that this agreement represents a necessary step towards finding sustainable solutions to the problems facing these families.

In his speech during the signing ceremony, Al-Aqili praised the pioneering humanitarian role played by the State of Kuwait; leadership, government and people, until it became at the forefront of countries supporting charitable and humanitarian work worldwide.

He explained that the wise leadership, represented by His Highness the Amir of the country, and His Highness the Crown Prince, may God protect them, have given charitable work their special attention, and have been keen to support and protect it in light of regional and international challenges and changes, through the effective role of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Social Affairs, and the Kuwaiti society with its giving, help and support for the sustainability of Kuwait's charitable work that helps the needy around the world.

Al-Aqili touched on the importance of signing this agreement in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, which requires concerted efforts to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable groups.

He pointed out that statistics show that more than 28 million people in Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance, with 3.5 million people internally displaced; which highlights the size of the crisis that particularly affects women and children.

Al-Aqili added that this agreement is the fourth of its kind between the International Mercy Association and the High Commissioner.

He explained that the International Mercy Association is based on the concept of partnership with international, local and regional institutions based on two basic principles; the first is cooperation in righteousness and piety as our Lord Almighty commanded in His saying: (And cooperate in righteousness and piety) (Al-Ma'idah: 2), and this cooperation is the realization of this great meaning in the Book of Allah Almighty, and the second is that partnership in charitable work is a strategic choice for the International Mercy Association whether at the local, regional, Islamic and international levels.

He added: The association has several partnerships in each of these axes. At the local level, Mercy has many partnerships with Kuwaiti charitable associations, and at the regional level, partnerships with Qatar Charity and the King Salman Center in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and at the Islamic level, the association has partnerships with the Islamic Development Bank that exceeded $40 million in reconstruction projects in the Gaza Strip and Palestine, and had a great impact on those who deserve it, in addition to its international partnerships with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Al-Aqili praised the mutual trust between Kuwaiti charitable institutions and international institutions, stressing that such partnerships embody the high level of professionalism enjoyed by Kuwaiti charitable societies in managing humanitarian projects.

He pointed out that the International Mercy Society enjoys a close and continuous relationship with the state's ministries, bodies, and humanitarian agencies of the United Nations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; as it is the body most specialized in the issues of displaced persons and refugees in the world.

He stressed that this close relationship extends over many years of work and joint cooperation in supporting urgent humanitarian issues around the world, and is based on mutual respect and trust, and achieving common humanitarian and charitable goals; in accordance with the fixed principle of the International Mercy Society; which is to provide the most beneficial to the neediest, and in light of its current strategy (2025 - 2022 AD) based on maximizing the impact according to the slogan "An impact that remains".

At the end of his statement, Al-Aqili expressed his hopes that this agreement will achieve its goals of alleviating the suffering of the brotherly Afghan people, asking God Almighty to crown the various humanitarian efforts with success and guidance.

A glimmer of hope

In turn, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Kuwait, Nisreen Rabiaan, said: This agreement enhances the renewed cooperation between the Commission and the International Mercy Association.

She explained that the International Mercy Association had previously supported the Zakat cash support program for Syrian refugees in Jordan, and shelter programs for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, and today it continues to support the cash assistance program of the “UNHCR Zakat Fund”; as this contribution will be allocated to provide and ensure that the concerned persons throughout Afghanistan are provided with cash assistance to enhance their access to basic needs through Zakat funds; which will benefit more than 250 families.

Rabian indicated that the Commission is working to distribute 100% of Zakat funds without deducting any operating expenses, in line with the religious fatwas issued in this regard.

She explained that statistics for the year 2024 indicate that about 24 million people in Afghanistan will need humanitarian assistance, and that more than 87% of them suffer from food insecurity.

She stated that at least one million children will be at risk of acute malnutrition, and for the rest of this year, economic instability and increased humanitarian needs are expected to continue, as a result of secondary displacement and climate change.

In conclusion, she indicated that this cooperation with the International Mercy Association reflects the keenness of the UNHCR to continue the partnership with charitable organizations in Kuwait, and the Commission looks forward to this agreement being a ray of hope for the lives of refugees and providing decent and sustainable livelihoods to help them build a better future.
