A group of Syrian orphan children in southeastern Turkey donated their savings to help flood and forest fire victims in the country.

Zainab al-Tahhan, 5, one of the Syrian orphans in Sanliurfa province, brought her penny bank to the Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) in order to support the Turkish people who suffered from the recent fire and flood disasters.

Another nine children staying at the Damascus Orphanage in Sanliurfa were impressed by al-Tahhan's exemplary behavior and donated their savings to the foundation.

Nearly 2,000 Turkish liras (around $236) from their penny banks were sent to the victims by the foundation officials.

-Get well soon, Turkey

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, another donor, Dujana Bunni, said he was very upset when he saw the fire and flood news on television.

Expressing that he wanted to do a small favor for the Turkish people who have been supporting them for years, Bunni said: "I sent my penny bank through the foundation to help people affected by the fires and floods. Get well soon, Turkey."

Behcet Atila, head of IHH Sanliurfa, thanked the children for their support and contributions.

Atila added that this move made them very emotional and happy.

Floods caused by heavy rains hit the region in the north on Wednesday, leaving 48 people dead in the province of Kastamonu.

Meanwhile, the country battled forest fires in the south in a short time, and they are now under control.

At least eight people have been killed, according to official figures, since fires started in southern and southwestern Turkey on July 28.

Turkey currently hosts nearly 4 million Syrians, making it the top refugee hosting country in the world. It is also providing protection and humanitarian assistance to nearly 6 million people in northern Syria./aa

Jeff Bezos' space company Blue Origin filed a lawsuit Monday that aims to prevent a rival company, Elon Musk's SpaceX, from exclusive rights to land astronauts on the moon.

The Verge reported that Blue Origin filed the suit against NASA because the American space agency rejected Blue Origin's lunar landing proposal and picked SpaceX instead.

Three companies made bids for the right to return NASA astronauts to the moon, almost 50 years since they last walked on the lunar surface.

NASA had signaled that it might choose two companies for the mission, but in April, it announced that it was awarding the contract solely to SpaceX's $2.9 billion Starship proposal.

NASA argued that it gets funding from Congress, and with funds limited, sided with less-expensive SpaceX over Blue Origin's $5.9 billion proposal.

But in Monday's lawsuit, Blue Origin argued that NASA carried out an "unlawful and improper evaluation of proposals submitted under the Moon competition." Blue Origin and Elon Musk have also been openly trolling each other, each claiming that they are better equipped to handle the NASA program, dubbed "Artemis.”

In July, the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) upheld the NASA decision to side with SpaceX, but the GAO's investigation created a three-month delay in starting the SpaceX contract, and the lawsuit filed Monday could further delay NASA's plans, regardless of which company ultimately wins.

The court battle among billionaires and their companies represents an entirely new shift in space travel, a domain that once belonged solely to governments.

Bezos launched his first Blue Origin manned spacecraft, New Shepard, with him on board, in July, which came several days after Virgin Galactic billionaire Richard Branson launched his own manned spacecraft. Each made just brief trips into space, with the goal of proving that space tourism is a viable enterprise./agencies

At least 1,419 people are dead and more than 6,900 injured after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, the country’s civil defense agency said late Monday.

The epicenter of Saturday’s quake was 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) northeast of Saint-Louis-du-Sud at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

The US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami alert in the region warning that waves could rise 3 meters (9.8 feet). The alert was later lifted.

A magnitude-5.2 aftershock was felt and more aftershocks are expected in the coming days, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Officials said the USGS recorded nine aftershocks since the main earthquake.

The country, which has suffered huge devastation and tremors, has called for international help.

One of the world’s most deadly earthquakes in the last century occurred in Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010.

According to official figures, 316,000 people died and 300,000 were injured in the magnitude-7.0 quake that occurred in the south of the country.

About 1.3 million people were left homeless in the aftermath./agencies

A court in Bosnia and Herzegovina sentenced former Serb soldier Rade Garic to 20 years in prison Monday for committing war crimes during the 1990s.

The court in the capital Sarajevo said that Garic, as a member of the Republika Srpska Army (VRS), was involved in the murder, detention, torture, rape and exile of Bosniak civilians in Vlasenica in 1992.

It also said that Garic took an active role in the army’s systematic attacks in Srebrenica, where more than 8,000 Bosniak men were brutally murdered in July 1995.

Garic's trial began in October 2018.

Srebrenica genocide

More than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed when Bosnian Serb forces attacked Srebrenica in July 1995, despite the presence of Dutch peacekeeping troops.

The Serb forces were trying to wrest territory from Bosnian Muslims and Croats to form a state.

In the spring of 1993, the UN Security Council declared Srebrenica a “safe area.” However, troops led by Gen. Ratko Mladic, who was later found guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, overran the UN zone.

Dutch troops failed to act as Serb forces occupied the area, killing some 2,000 men and boys on July 11 alone.

About 15,000 residents of Srebrenica fled to the surrounding mountains, but Serb troops hunted down and killed 6,000 more people.

Bodies of victims have been found in 570 different places in the country.

In 2007, the International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled that genocide had been committed in Srebrenica.

On June 8, 2021, UN tribunal judges upheld a verdict sentencing Mladic to life in prison for genocide, crimes against humanity, extermination, and other war crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina./agencies

Anticipating a major influx of irregular migrants from the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, European states will establish an “initiative with transit countries” to protect their arrival on the continent, the French president announced Monday.

As common Afghans scrambled towards safety and chaotic scenes emerged from the tarmac of Kabul airport a day after the Taliban seized control of the capital city, Emmanuel Macron said Europe needs to protect itself from irregular migrants.

Terming the events a “historic turning point” in a televised speech after chairing a special defense council meeting on Afghanistan earlier in the day, Macron said the current destabilization of security poses a risk of causing an “influx of irregular migratory flows into Europe.”

While observing that Afghans face “terrible and immense challenges in the coming weeks and months,” Macron said “eventually the fate of Afghanistan is in her hands” and France will remain in solidarity alongside Afghan women.

While France is doing and will continue to do its duty to protect those who are most threatened, he noted that Europe also needs to “anticipate and protect” against “significant irregular migratory flows that would endanger those who use them and feed trafficking of all kinds.”

Following talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other European heads of state, Macron announced a new initiative that must be built urgently to “fight against irregular flows, [achieve] solidarity in the effort, the harmonization of protection criteria, and the establishment of cooperation with transit and host countries like Pakistan, Iran and Turkey."

Macron received harsh criticism following his remarks and was compared to far-right leader Marine Le Pen and her anti-immigrant stand. A #EmmanuelLePen hashtag became trending on French Twitter.

Later, Macron defended himself by saying his statements on Afghanistan were falsified.

"France is doing and will continue to do its duty to protect those who are most threatened," he tweeted.

The neighboring countries of Pakistan and Iran are already hosting major refugee populations, a consequence of over four decades of conflict in Afghanistan.

The exact details of the mechanism are likely to be announced in the coming days. The European Union in 2016 struck a similar deal with Turkey in the aftermath of the conflict in Syria to ensure that refugees do not flood European territory. Under the agreement, Ankara was paid 6 billion euros in aid to limit new migratory routes from opening, prevent the number of asylum seekers and irregular migrants from attempting to enter Europe and resettle Syrian refugees.

Macron noted that terrorist groups continue to remain present in Afghanistan, seeking to take advantage of the destabilization. He warned that it should not once again become the sanctuary of terrorism that it was. He added that France will continue to actively fight against Islamist terrorism under all circumstances and will coordinate and cooperate with Russia, the US and Europe for international peace, stability and fight against a common enemy of terrorism./agencies

The global cryptocurrency market's total value climbed Monday above $2 trillion for the first time in three months, according to data by digital asset price-tracking website CoinMarketCap.

The increase came amid the price of Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, reaching $48,000 on Saturday, marking its highest level since May 16, the day before it fell 6.5%.

Ethereum, the world's second-biggest cryptocurrency by market cap, hit $3,333 early Monday – its highest value since May 19 when it plummeted a whopping 27.9% in a single day.

During the last three months, the global cryptocurrency market lost around 49% of its total value, falling to $1.16 trillion on July 20 from $2.28 trillion on April 17, according to CoinMarketCap data.

While Bitcoin fell 54.4% to $29,341 on July 20, from its record high of $64,374 on April 14, Ethereum lost 59.6% of its value to $1,758 on July 21, from $4,354 on May 12.

The steep decline in cryptocurrency prices came amid China's higher scrutiny on Bitcoin mining operations, and US government plans for tighter regulation.

While Bitcoin's market value stood around $876 billion at 14.20 p.m. EDT (1820GMT), Ethereum's market cap was approximately $379 billion.

Their share of the total crypto market, known as dominance, stood at 43.5% and 18.8%, respectively.

Cryptocurrencies' popularity worldwide was in decline in June when El Salvador became the first country to accept Bitcoin as a legal tender starting on Sept. 7.

Fitch ratings, however, warned Monday in a statement that the move "will likely be a credit negative for local insurance companies with exposure to the newly established currency due to higher FX and earnings volatility risk as well as additional regulatory and operating risk considerations."

Stressing that Bitcoin’s practical implementation has not been defined by regulators yet, the agency said this raises challenges to using it as a store of value or means of payment, especially there is no previous or comparable usage or adoption by central banks in other global financial markets.

"Fitch does not expect bitcoin to be widely used by insurers to make claim or benefit payments or insurance companies to offer policies denominated in the digital currency ... Insurers will likely convert bitcoin into USD as quickly as possible to limit exchange risks, if policyholders decide to use it to pay premiums," the global rating agency said./agencies

A member of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s own party is calling on him to apologize to the families of those British soldiers killed in the two-decade war in Afghanistan.

“On behalf of previous governments, the prime minister should apologize to the bereaved families of service personnel, and to those personnel who are still paying the price for this folly,” said conservative MP John Baron, a former officer in the British army and the only Tory parliamentarian to vote against UK intervention in the conflict, as quoted by the Evening Standard newspaper.

Baron has been consistently critical of government policy in Afghanistan, and on Monday blasted the unfolding situation there.

“This wider mission was born of ignorance, was unrealistic in its aims, poorly executed and thoroughly under-resourced – even the withdrawal is a shambles,” he added.

Baron argued that the fundamental error of the UK government at the time and the wider US-led NATO coalition was to remain in Afghanistan after defeating the Taliban and al-Qaeda and embarking on a nation-building process that yielded little success, as events in Afghanistan in the past few days have proven.

The UK’s sole focus and responsibility, according to Baron, is to now evacuate all remaining UK nationals from the country as well as those Afghan nationals who aided and supported British troops during the war.

“Our intervention now brings its responsibilities. In addition to getting our nationals out safely, the international community must now stand by those fleeing the country in fear of their lives, including those who helped British forces.”

“As a country, we need to do our bit to reach out and welcome the refugees and asylum-seekers. The priority now is to save lives.”

France's controversial "anti-separatism" law, which has been criticized for singling out Muslims, will allow the state more leeway to target Muslims, a French journalist Fateh Kimouche warned on Monday.

Kimouche, the founder of the Al Kanz website, which focuses on Islam and Muslim-related issues, alleged that French President Emmanuel Macron is suffering from an "Islamophobic fallacy," in which he is unable to distinguish between terrorists and Muslims.

Talking to Anadolu Agency, he opined that Macron opted to punish Islam after a series of terror incidents carried out by Daesh/ISIS terrorists in the country, stressing that the law is designed to confront Muslims, not terrorists.

He drew attention to the law, which has resulted in an upsurge in Islamophobic discourse in the mainstream media and on social media, as well as the smearing of writings on mosque walls and mayors dismissing imams (prayer leaders).

Furthermore, Kimouche added, “now, the state has a free space to attack any Muslim, any Muslim-operated business or religious institutions under the pretext of respect to the republican principles, which based on equivocal principles.”

Underlining that many international media outlets including Financial Times and New York Times, and organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch (HRW) have heavily criticized the law, he noted that the reactions on the law further angered Macron.

Anti-separatism law

The bill was passed by the National Assembly last month, despite strong opposition from both rightist and leftist lawmakers.

The government claims that the legislation is intended to strengthen France's secular system, but critics believe that it restricts religious freedom and marginalizes Muslims.

The bill has been criticized for targeting France's Muslim community – the largest in Europe, with 3.35 million members – and imposing restrictions on many aspects of its members' lives.

The law allows officials to intervene in mosques and associations responsible for their administration, as well as control the finances of Muslim-affiliated associations and NGOs.

It also restricts the educational choices of Muslims by making home schooling subject to official permission.

Under the law, patients are prohibited from choosing their doctors based on gender for religious or other reasons, and "secularism education" has been made compulsory for all civil servants.

France has been criticized by international organizations and NGOs, especially the UN, for targeting and marginalizing Muslims with the law./agencies

The death toll from floods in Turkey's Black Sea region has risen to 70, authorities said on Monday.

Floods caused by heavy rain hit the Black Sea region in the north of the country on Wednesday, leaving 60 people dead in the province of Kastamonu, a Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) statement said.

Nine others died in the Sinop province along with one more person in Bartin province. The treatment of eight people still continues in hospitals, it said.

A total of 341 people in Bartin, 1,480 in Kastamonu, and 560 in Sinop were evacuated to safe areas, added the disaster management agency added.

On Friday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the Bozkurt district in Kastamonu, the worst-hit flood area. Erdogan announced that the places affected had been declared a disaster area./agencies

Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday said he left the country to "prevent a flood of bloodshed."

In a statement posted on Facebook, Ghani said "countless patriots would be martyred and the city of Kabul would be destroyed, resulting in a major humanitarian catastrophe in the six-million-strong city" if he had stayed.

"Taliban have won... and are now responsible for the honor, property, and self-preservation of their countrymen," Ghani said.

However, he said, the group did not "win the legitimacy of hearts."

He also vowed to continue to serve the people of Afghanistan "intellectually and through programs,"

Following the departure of Ghani, former President Hamid Karzai, veteran politicians Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and Abdullah formed a council with the aim to ensure a smooth transfer of power./agencies
