Ethiopia said Thursday that the government and its international partners have continued to send food to its northernmost region of Tigray.

"Humanitarian flights for personnel, cargo and cash are still ongoing, and movement is being undertaken from Addis [Ababa] to Mekelle through UN Humanitarian Air Service flights," Billene Seyoum, the spokeswoman at the office of the prime minister, said at a press briefing.

An EU Humanitarian Air Bridge has also started humanitarian flights to the Tigray region, she said.

"As of Sept. 14, 2021, 32 partners have been granted permits to transport ETB144 million [$3.14 million] to Mekelle for their humanitarian operations.

"Humanitarian partners WFP [World Food Program] and JEOP [Food Assistance in Ethiopia] are currently operating in the Tigray region and dispatching food to woredas [districts] and distributing to beneficiaries," she said.

Seyoum said that as of Sept. 14, 2021, humanitarian partners had deployed 590 trucks to transport humanitarian cargoes from Semera to Mekelle.

Accordingly, 15,005 metric tons of food (wheat, oil, pulses, corn and soybeans) and 5,785 tons of non-food items were transported (water, sanitation and hygiene and health and shelter).

The aid included 759,235 liters of fuel and 1,036 metric tons of seeds.

No trucks are stranded in Semera and at check points at the moment, she said, but indicated her government's concern that hundreds of trucks entering Tigray were not being returned.

She said since checkpoints have been decreased from 7 to 2, movement of humanitarian assistance into the region has been facilitated by the government and no access issues have been noted.

Currently, forces of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) are launching attacks in neighboring regions of Afar and Amhara after a June 29 unilateral cease-fire declared by the federal government and subsequent troop withdrawal from Tigray./agencies

Job seekers in Austria will risk losing some of their unemployment benefits if they turn down a job offer because it requires getting vaccinated against COVID-19, local media reported Thursday.

Austria’s Der Standard newspaper shared a letter sent on Aug. 25 by the Austrian Labor Ministry to the Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS).

It said that In the event that job hunters refuse any employment offer due to a requirement to get vaccinated, the AMS will have the right to cut their unemployment benefits.

In this case, the unemployment benefits of job seekers who do not have a medical excuse for not getting vaccinated can be blocked for up to six weeks.

Due to an increase in the number of daily cases in the country, the gradual enactment of some COVID-19 measures, especially for people who have not been vaccinated, brought the necessity of vaccination to the agenda at many workplaces.

While in Lower Austria, Vienna and Styria, a vaccination requirement for those who will be employed in some fields was introduced, many workplaces in the private sector have made vaccination compulsory for new recruitments.

Although 70% of the population that is required to be vaccinated in the country is vaccinated, arguments continue on the issue that vaccination is a personal choice and should not be made compulsory directly or indirectly.

The country registered 2,198 new coronavirus cases, pushing the total to over 718,000, and 14 people lost their fight against the disease in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 10,870./agencies

The grand imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar University, the highest seat of Sunni Muslim learning, reiterated Thursday that the Palestinian cause is the central cause for Muslims.

"The Palestinian cause is the primary cause for Al-Azhar and Muslims...and the struggle of its Arab people will remain a source of pride and inspiration," said Ahmed al-Tayeb while receiving Mahmoud al-Habbash, the Palestinian Authority’s top Sharia judge and President Mahmoud Abbas’s adviser on religious and Islamic affairs, according to Egypt’s official MENA news agency.

"The Zionist terrorism will remain overwhelming evidence of the deficiency of the international community's values and standards in dealing with the causes of the peoples," al-Tayeb added.

Al-Habbash stressed that Al-Azhar's endless efforts and stance towards the Palestinian cause are honorable and appreciated.

On Thursday, the Waqf department that supervises Al-Aqsa Mosque said 307 “Israeli” settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex under the protection of Israeli forces.

Several extremist Jewish groups called on settlers to make their way into Al-Aqsa to celebrate the Jewish Yom Kippur holiday.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is the world's third-holiest site for Muslims. Jews call the area the "Temple Mount," claiming it was the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times./agecies

The tradition of slaughtering dolphins and whales off Denmark’s Faroe Islands sparked new outrage especially among animal lovers and environment activists.

Samuel Rostol, a volunteer animal rights activist in the international non-profit marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd founded by one of the leading names of Greenpeace Paul Watson, told Anadolu Agency his experience on the island.

“I've been at the Faroe Islands for about two and a half months and during this time I documented seven different piles of whale hunts called the Grindadrap,” Rostol said.

“At this very last one has reached a medium worldwide now,” as around 1,400 dolphins were killed, he said.

“I was not there, unfortunately,” he said. “But this has been documented by locals so that we can now share the videos and the material from this.”

Rostol said he left the Faroe Islands just two days before the hunt, “which kind of speaks about the nature of these hunts to happen randomly.”

“When a pot of dolphins or pilot whales pass the islands, a call for a hunt (is made) … and the boats drive out and try to, like, chase these animals into the nearest bay or the nearest beach where these animals can be killed,” he added.

This summer, his main task has been to film these hunts with a drone, he noted, adding: “So I have filmed the slaughter, I have filmed the aftermath, and I also filmed a few chases.”

Not legal in EU

In the EU, this hunt is not legal, Rostol said, noting that the Faroe Islands is not a part of the bloc.

“So they are able to maintain this hunt that goes back centuries, they have recordings of this hunt from the late 1500s,” he said.

According to the animal rights activist, back then, this hunt was necessary for the survival of the villages.

“So for hundreds of years, this has been one way to sustain a nation that doesn't have a lot of options to grow food themselves.”

As the population in the island has gone up so did the need for food, he added. “But what we've seen simultaneously is worldwide pollution in the oceans.”

“So these dolphins and these animals being at the top of the food chain, eating a lot of other fish they accumulate a lot of toxins like mercury and other PCBs and dioxins,” he said.

Now, he said, the Faroe Islands are not dependent on this as a food source.

“So now they maintain this tradition, partially because it's under tradition, partially because they oppose to foreign interference, and at least they claim that many hunters still hunt because they don't want to stop because of foreign pressure,” he added.

“Traditions are hard to end,” he said. “People cling to their traditions with all their muscle fibers and this is one of those traditions where even their own health government is asking them to be very careful eating the meats and blubber, like the fatty tissues from these animals.”

Based on this fact alone, this hunt and this tradition might be nearing an end, according to Rostol.

Many people oppose this 'unnecessary violence'

Rostol also said he receives several messages from locals living in the Faroe Islands.

“They can tell me how they feel, but they can't do it publicly because then they will lose friends, they will lose family or they will lose their jobs or their customers.”

“So, the difficult part here is how can I be a part of inspiring people to speak out,” he said. “I'm working on right now trying to find a way to help or to show these Faroese that you're not alone. There are many people now, together with you who oppose, this unnecessary violence towards these animals.”

There are many companies and organizations that fight and urge people to boycott especially the Faroese salmon production which is one of the main export products of the island, Rostol noted.

“If that could happen on a worldwide scale, then the Faroese (people) would be forced by economic reasons to reconsider this hunts,” he said.

Since Faroe Islands are not part of the EU, they can kind of get away from an EU ban, he said. “But hopefully one day we'll see that the European economies go together and say we will not accept this atrocity towards animals and you have to stop or we won't buy your products.”

This year’s hunt was also criticized by Switzerland-based international marine conservation organization OceanCare.

“OceanCare is extremely concerned and greatly puzzled by the sheer size of this one particular hunt,” the organization said in a statement on Sept. 14.

Citing Fabienne McLellan of OceanCare, the statement read: “It is simply absurd and cruel, to cause so many highly evolved and sentient marine mammals to suffer. They have gone too far and we just hope that the local people will also strongly voice their criticisms and concerns.”

Meanwhile, Faroe Islands’ Fishery Minister Jacob Vestergaard defended the hunt in an interview with radio broadcaster Kringvarp Foaroya.

Vestergaard said the dolphin hunt had been done by the book and neither pilot whales nor white-sided dolphins are endangered.

The annual hunt, known locally as Grindadrap, during which whale hunters kill masses of white-sided dolphins, took place on Saturday and Sunday, said French news outlet News 24.

The remote islands, a Danish autonomous territory, remain the last place in Europe allowed to hunt sea mammals, as the hunt is considered an example of indigenous whaling.

Citing local sources and the Blue Planet Society, a volunteer group aiming to end overexploitation of the world’s oceans, News 24 said over 1,400 white-sided dolphins were killed in this year’s hunt./aa

Climate-related disasters have affected the lives of at least 139.2 million people and killed some 17,242 since the beginning of COVID-19, according to a report published Thursday.

An additional 658.1 million people have been exposed to extreme temperatures, said the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre in a release.

"The world is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis where the climate change and COVID-19 are pushing communities to their limits," IFRC President Francesco Rocca said at a press conference in New York presenting the new report.

"In the lead up to COP26, we urge world leaders to take immediate action not only to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also to address the existent and imminent humanitarian impacts of climate change," he added.

The 2021 UN Climate Change Conference, known as COP26, will take place in Glasgow, Scotland between Oct. 31-Nov. 21.

"The massive spending in COVID-19 recovery proves that governments can act fast and drastically in the face of global threats," Rocca said.

"It is time to turn words into action and devote the same energy to the climate crisis. Every day, we are witnessing the impact of human-made climate change. The climate crisis is here, and we need to act now," he added./aa

Former US President Barack Obama said he had spent a "wonderful" time in Turkey during his first overseas trip as president in 2009.

“I visited Istanbul (largest metropolitan city of Turkey) on my first trip abroad as the president, and it was wonderful," Obama told younger generations in his speech at the online program “Reshape Virtual Summit 2021.”

During his first term as the US president, Obama visited Turkey between April 5 and 7, 2009. He stayed in the capital Ankara for two days and visited Istanbul to participate in the “Second Forum of the Alliance of the Civilizations,” where he visited historical places including Sultan Ahmet Mosque, also known as Blue Mosque.

Turkey is an "extraordinary country with extraordinary people," he said, stressing that "meeting incredible young people" meant a lot to him.

The former US president said visiting the 17th-century Blue Mosque in the Fatih district of Istanbul was also a great experience for him.

The Blue Mosque, located is one of the special historical sites globally, connecting the past, present and future, he added.

The grand mosque is considered one of the most beautiful religious architectures in the world.

Obama also said he was not following TV news when he was president because the news is designed "to attract the audience" and it was "not good" for him as he was trying to make strategic long-term decisions for his country.

Obama noted that he is more open to new ideas and advised young people to not only consume content but also produce, shape, and empower themselves with technology.

Reshape is a two-day virtual summit that began on Wednesday bringing together industry leaders, luminaries, dignitaries, disruptors, cutting-edge creators, and data-driven storytellers to discuss paradigm shifts in customer experience, and sustainability, as well as diversity and inclusion./agencies

US President Joe Biden said Thursday his country is at an "inflection point" regarding the economy, during an event at the White House.

Biden said the US should choose a path that would invest in creating sustained economic growth that would benefit working- and middle-class.

"Over the past 40 years, the wealthy has gotten wealthier and too many corporations have lost their sense of responsibility to their workers, communities and the country," he said.

The president noted that CEOs of companies used to make around 20 times the average worker, but today they make around 350 times.

"Since the pandemic began, billionaires have seen their wealth go up by $1.8 trillion ... simply not fair," he said, noting largest corporations in the US paid no federal income tax and made over $40 billion in 2020.

"The people who built this country have been basically cut out of the deal," he said, noting that when he took the office the US has been pulling out of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression in 1929.

Biden emphasized on the importance of getting vaccinated against the coronavirus pandemic, and defended his requirement for getting shots.

"We have to build back better than before ... big corporations and the super wealthy have to start paying their fair share of taxes. It's long overdue. I'm not going to punish anyone, I'm a capitalist," he said.

The president said the top 1% has evaded an estimated $160 billion in taxes "they owe each year," adding "55 of most profitable corporations in America paid zero in federal income taxes."

Biden argued that his plan would solve such issues, which he would give the IRS the resources it needs to keep up with the lawyers and accountants of the super-wealthy.

Arguing that his predecessor Donald Trump's $2 trillion of tax cuts four years ago was "a giant giveaway to largest corporations at the top 1%", Biden said that tax cut ballooned the federal deficit.

He said his tax cuts, instead, would give a break to working families. "It's about time working people got their tax breaks in this country."

Biden said his bipartisan plan also includes investments in roads, bridges, highways, clean water, universal broadband, quality and affordable places for families to live, education in preschools and community colleges./aa

The Canary Islands Emergency Services rescued 408 irregular migrants off the coast of the Spanish archipelago in 24 hours, according to data compiled on Thursday.

The emergency services reported intercepting 10 small boats that had made the treacherous Atlantic Sea journey from North Africa. Most of the arrivals were of North African descent, although at least 86 came from Subsaharan Africa.

According to Spain’s Interior Ministry, more than 11,000 irregular migrants have reached the Canary Islands by sea this year. At the same time last year, the figure was just over 5,000.

Last year, in October and November, when the migration route tends to become most active, the Canary Islands were unable to cope with the massive influx of migrants.

At one point, more than 2,700 migrants were held for days in a makeshift camp on the Arguineguin pier. The setup was condemned by several activist groups for inhumane treatment and illegalities.

In all of 2019, 2,698 irregular migrants reached the Canary Islands by boat.

Due to the dramatic increase in arrivals so far this year, local authorities are bracing for an unprecedented surge in arrivals in the months to come.

This summer has already seen a record number of deaths on the perilous maritime route, with an average of seven people dying each day. According to UN data seen by Spanish daily El Publico and other local media outlets, at least 654 people lost their lives making the journey to the Canary Islands from June through August.

“We are seeing the highest number of mortal victims in the last ten years and we still have not reached the months of October and November,” Txema Santana, an advisor on migrations to the Canary Islands government, told El Periodico.

“The route has become much more feminized. We aren’t just seeing young men looking for better lives anymore. Now, there are more families who are fleeing from very fragile countries, some of which are experiencing armed conflict and situations made worse by the pandemic,” he explained./aa

All naturally occurring climate events are now related to human-induced climate change and extreme events previously seen once a century may now happen every 20 years, the head of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Thursday.

“The last five years have been the warmest five-year period on record since we started measurements in 1850,” Petteri Taalas said at a news conference to launch the United in Science 2021 Report.

“Because of climate change, the kind of events that used to happen every 100 years, may happen nowadays, every 20 years, and in the future even more often. So, the risk of these kinds of events is growing because of climate change.”

The multiagency report states that the COVID-19 pandemic and resultant global economic slowdown did not deter the relentless advance of climate change.

According to the report, greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere remain at record levels, leaving the planet vulnerable to dangerous warming in the future.

“We are still significantly off-schedule to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement,” UN chief Antonio Guterres says in the foreword to the report, noting that 2021 has seen fossil fuel emissions bounce back and greenhouse gas concentrations continuing to soar.

Severe human-enhanced weather events have affected health, lives, and livelihoods on every continent, he added.

“Unless there are immediate, rapid, and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius will be impossible, with catastrophic consequences for people and the planet on which we depend,” said Guterres, who also addressed the news conference via video link.

“We have reached the tipping point on the need for climate action. The disruption to our climate and our planet is already worse than we thought. It is moving faster than predicted.”

Threat to developed countries

According to the UN head, even the most developed countries have become vulnerable.

“Hurricane Ida recently cut power to over a million people in New Orleans, and New York City was paralyzed by record-breaking rain that killed at least 50 people in the region,” he recalled.

Guterres also cited the unprecedented floods that devastated parts of western Europe and the exceptionally deadly heat wave that killed hundreds in the northwest of the US and western Canada.

WMO chief Taalas said people who died of COVID-19 were the “same type of people who are also sensitive to changes in temperature patterns.”

“These heat wave events cause mortality and especially those elderly and sick people who have died of COVID-19 have also typically been dying because of heatwaves,” he warned.

“Improved early warnings and disaster risk management means that we are better at saving lives, but the socioeconomic and humanitarian impacts are spiraling in the form of worsening food insecurity, more displacement, migration, and the potential for unrest.”/agencies
