A local team of volunteers organized a cleanup drive at the Ushairej beach yesterday to mark the International Coastal Cleanup Day. US Ambassador to Kuwait Alina L Romanowski participated in the event, organized by the Green Hands Environmental Team, and featuring representatives from other NGOs in Kuwait.

As an ambitious global environmental initiative, the world celebrated the International Coastal Cleanup Day yesterday by organizing various campaigns and activities to clean seacoasts and beaches. These campaigns aim to raise environmental awareness and the need to preserve seacoasts and beaches, and to shed light on the problems and threats to the environment, thus contributing to maintaining its ecological balance and ensuring its biodiversity.

On the International Coastal Cleanup Day, the Media official of Kuwait’s diving team, Dr Dhari Al-Huwail said that the team participated in the global campaign to clean the beaches by cleaning the southern coast of Fahaheel in cooperation with the Kuwait Municipality and volunteers. He noted that the team chose the southern coast as a cleaning site on this occasion due to the accumulation of a lot of plastic waste carried by the northern winds that blew over Kuwait a few days ago, indicating that the team was able to remove two tons of plastic waste.

Moreover, he stressed the danger of plastic waste and its negative impact on the marine and coastal environment and its organisms, as it destroys thousands of sea creatures and birds, wishing more penalties for violators to ensure the safety of the environment and coasts. He also said that the team continues to protect the marine and coastal environment throughout the year, with the participation of many governmental and private agencies, and it has distinguished international partnerships, most notably the environmental cooperation with the United Nations Environment Program.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Wildlife Protection Committee of the Kuwait Society for the Protection of the Environment, Dr Manaf Behbehani, said that the coasts are among the most important natural environments due to their biological diversity. He noted that Kuwait enjoys a seacoast extending from north to south with a length of about 325 km, and the nine islands have a coastline of 175 km, which is considered a natural wealth.

Behbehani stressed that Kuwait attaches great importance to protecting the coasts and their vital and non-vital resources, as stated in Article 100 of the Environmental Law, as it includes severe financial penalties and imprisonment for those who cause the destruction of coastal environments.

In the meantime, Director-General of Public Relations and Media at the Environment Public Authority, Sheikha Al-Ibrahim, said that the International Coastal Cleanup Day is a global initiative identified by the United Nations and celebrated by the world in many activities to clean coastal and marine areas and aims to raise environmental awareness. She added that the authority chose the beaches of Kubbar Island as a cleaning site on this occasion, as it is one of the most beautiful Kuwaiti islands, for the diversity of its wildlife./ kuwaittimes

Homes have become a core of green societies in Kuwait, with many families setting up traditional and modern gardens with eye-catching products. Kuwaitis are not new to gardening which has contributed to food security, and many citizens recently started home gardening and thus producing daily and seasonal vegetables.

Home farmers overcome some difficulties, like limited resources, by seeking new methods that enabled them to see fresh products on their tables. Some famers said home farming has become a passion which taught them discipline and patience, as well as being a good way to spend free time in a productive manner.

‘Green and fresh’
Nasser AbalKhail said he was using fresh water to irrigate his garden to keep his products “green and fresh.” Some produce like thyme, celery, parsley, cucumber and spices need higher water quality than the regular fresh water, said AbalKhail, in order to maintain soil alkalinity. “High alkalinity will raise alkalinity of water used to irrigate plants, which would increase levels of sodium in the soil thus negatively affect the produce” and the harvest die, he explained.

AbalKhail said the use of phosphoric acid helped maintain alkalinity of irrigating water, and this product was available in the market. He said farmers should wear goggles and gloves when using phosphoric acid. Nora Al-Ahmad, a farmer, said hot weather was affecting her crops like carrots, radish, rocca and lettuce which usually needed moderate and moist atmosphere. She said building a plant nursery at home was “one of the new solutions to overcome scorching heat in order to guarantee sustainability of plants and production.”

‘Beautiful and positive’
Khadija Al-Refae, another farmer, said home gardening has “beautiful and positive” impacts on physical and psychological wellbeing of people which contributed to better condition of the heart, bones and muscles. “Exposure to sun rays while farming increases Vitamin D, from which many people suffer deficit,” she said. Home farmers can use empty spaces like yards, roof tops or windows to plant their domestic gardens. Nouri Al-Ostath, with an experience in home gardening, said farmers could plant vertically by using pots which could produce many fruits like peach, apple and figs.

The Public Authority for Agriculture and Fish Resources was also encouraging experienced and amateur farmers to do their own home gardens, contributing to better food security. The authority published guidelines to help farmers design their gardens to ultimately have better produce. These guidelines range from preparation of soil, irrigation system and water quality, fertilizers and spacing. One of the main objectives of the home gardens is producing daily needs of leafy vegetables, tomatoes and carrots for example. The authority was also offering training courses over the fundamentals of home gardening to contribute to healthy environment. – KUNA

According to reliable sources, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has developed a vision for implementing the Cabinet’s decision to take the necessary measures for the disbursement of basic food supplies (ration) to eligible low-income earners, and reviewing the share of basic food items for each individual, reports Al-Rai daily. They explained that the ministry has started coordinating with the Ministry of Finance, and indicated that it would start the tightening of the ration belt with rice and sugar commodities. The quantities of these two commodities disbursed will be reduced.

Also, a proposal to reduce the share of infant formula was excluded. The proposed plan is to reduce the quota of rice granted from 6.25 per person to 5 kg. This means a return to the quota that was granted before it was increased in 2009. Also, there is a plan to reduce the per capita quota of sugar to one kilogram instead of the current two kilogram. Even though the sources did not specify the value of the support that will be provided, they clarified that the cost of food ration per capita ranges between KD 5 and KD 6 per month.

The sources said, “If it is decided to reduce the targeted supply quantities, the shares of about 2.1 million beneficiaries of rice and sugar commodities will decrease, including 461,000 from domestic workers whose numbers may also be reviewed”. As for the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s plans regarding construction support, the sources stated that, “The ministry cannot reduce this support because it is stipulated by law. It is spent at a maximum value of KD 30,000 for each receivable. However, the ministry plans to restructure its distribution over time, so that its disbursement periods range between three and four years instead of the current system, which allows the disbursement of the prescribed quantities within months. The trend requires that the disbursement of construction support coincides with the real needs of each stage of the construction process.”

The Ministry of Education has issued guidelines for the school administrations, to serve as a road map to confront the (Covid 19) virus including many organizational procedures that must be implemented at the beginning of the current 2021- 2022 school year.

The roadmap includes teams from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and a preventive health liaison officer whose main task is to monitor the epidemiological situation inside schools on a daily basis. The guidelines, a copy of which has been obtained by the daily, stresses on the need for the schools to provide the Ministry of Education operations room the location of the school, equipment, logistical support, and school plans (sketch), and for the Ministry of Health to train members of the joint operating rooms, and the operating room will supervise the institutes that fall within its control including religious and special needs education schools. The guidelines indicate the closure of school canteens with the possibility of allowing e-canteens (automated vending machines), and not using water coolers, and it is preferable to bring a bottle of water from home.

The guidelines explains the scheduled class time for all the three educational stages is 60 minutes, and the teacher must plan it well, and manage it in an attractive and interesting manner for students and that the most important contributing factor is dividing the class into two parts between skills and activities, where proper distribution of knowledge and skills is required.

Meanwhile , the Ministry of Health is waiting for the delivery of seasonal influenza and pneumococcal vaccines, in preparation for the vaccination campaign against these diseases in October, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting sources. Sources hinted that these vaccines will arrive within the next two weeks at the latest. Sources told the daily that the ministry is planning to allocate some coronavirus vaccination centers for seasonal influenza and pneumonia vaccination in order to prevent crowding or long queues. Sources expect a high turnout of citizens and expatriates in this year’s influenza vaccination campaign, similar to what happened last year. Sources confirmed that the ministry ordered appropriate quantities of influenza and pneumonia vaccines to accommodate all those wishing to get vaccinated.

Sources added this annual vaccination campaign targets the causes of the most common infectious winter respiratory diseases; such as infection with influenza virus, specifically influenza (A(H1N1+ H3N2), influenza B and other common pneumococcal bacteria. In another development , the Social Welfare Sector of the Department for the Elderly in the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor has prepared a special program to organize training and rehabilitation courses for those working in the home mobile service teams for the care of the elderly as the department awaits the continuation of the service through a decision issued by the Council of Ministers, reports Al-Anba daily. The source stated that this service was suspended when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out. The source emphasized this will be done in cooperation with cooperative societies which will support the efforts of the mobile teams in the service of the elderly, each in its respective area.

On a cloudy and humid Saturday afternoon, hundreds of right-wing demonstrators crowded in front of the US Capitol building for a so-called "Justice for J6" rally.

The gathering was seeking justice for people arrested for storming the Capitol on Jan. 6. According to the organizers of the event, the arrested individuals are political prisoners.

More than 600 people have been charged in connection with the deadly storming of the Capitol building which houses both House and Senate offices.

The rally area was packed with some 500 protesters who were almost outnumbered by law enforcement and press members.

At his address, organizer Matt Braynard, a former member of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, urged respect from demonstrators for police and press members.

"We don't want any (violence) today," said Braynard.

"This is about the many people who were there that day, who have not been charged with violence, not been accused of assaulting a police officer destroying property, and the disparate treatment that they've received. This is about equal treatment under the law," he added.

On Jan. 6, when Congress convened to certify Electoral College votes of then-President-elect Joe Biden, a mob of former President Donald Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol building.

Ensuing clashes left five people dead. Two law enforcement officers took their lives in the aftermath of the raid. Trump was accused of inciting deadly violence.

Jim Wass, a protester from Maryland state, said there was negligence and lack of security on the day of the Jan. 6 riots.

"I would like the judges who are sitting in judgment of these prisoners, these incarcerated people to stop saying they have to treat every insurrectionist with the most strict response and instead to admit there was no insurrection and you should go on the facts and law, not your fanciful argument about punishing people who are not on your political side," he added.

After an hour of speeches by the organizers, the rally ended with no major incident. Only one man was arrested by the Capitol police among the protesters.

"At approximately 12:40 pm, USCP officers arrested a man, who had a knife, for a weapons violation," the police later announced on Twitter./aa

As part of a broader push to improve the economy and fight poverty, Zanzibar’s government is working on new tactics to boost its seafood exports.

The seafood industry is seen as a powerful economic driver with the potential to increase revenues on the island while supporting thousands of livelihoods.

While the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has inflicted serious damage on Zanzibar’s economy, the government is determined to capitalize on the rebounding seafood industry to boost its economy.

Strategic investment

Fisheries, seaweed farming, and coastal tourism sectors are identified by Zanzibar authorities as strategic areas for investment with the potential to push the island’s economy to greater heights, officials said.

The concept of blue economy, coined by the UN in 2012, is perceived as a catalyst for social and economic development by the people in Zanzibar.

Aboud Jumbe, the permanent secretary in the Blue Economy and Fisheries Ministry, said Zanzibar’s government in conjunction with other partners is already implementing various initiatives to promote the seafood industry as part of its broader plans to tap ocean resources for economic gains.

“What we want to do is to stimulate production and increase exports of fish products,” he told Anadolu Agency.

Perched in the Indian Ocean, the semi-autonomous island off the coast of Tanzania is blessed with many marine resources.

Although fisheries play an important role in Zanzibar’s economy, the industry is not fully developed and most fishers are still using old fishing methods.

While small island economies across Africa get economic gains from the fisheries sector, officials said fishing activities in Zanzibar are still of a small scale.

In 2019, Zanzibar’s fisheries sector contributed merely 4.8% to the GDP, representing a 0.4 increase from 2018. A total of 36,728 tons of fish worth 196.65 billion Tanzanian shillings ($83.7 million) were harvested during the time compared to 38,107 tons reaped in 2020.

Ayoub Mahmoud, the regional commissioner for Zanzibar’s Unguja North, said the island is deeply committed to strengthening its seafood industry through effective production and marketing strategies.

“With better marketing strategies, we will certainly increase revenue in this sector,” he told Anadolu Agency.

Mahmoud said more investment is needed to increase the sector’s contribution to the economy.

“Zanzibar will soon be a hub for international seafood business that will increase employment, improve trade balance and promote our food security,” he asserted.

Skills and knowledge pool

Despite making some progress, analysts say in order for Zanzibar to achieve its dream, it must invest in human capital to bridge wide gaps in technical expertise needed to improve the fisheries sector.

“Zanzibar does not have enough trained personnel with knowledge and relevant technical skills in taking, culturing, processing, preserving, storing, transporting, marketing, and selling of fish,” said Flower Msuya, a senior marine biologist at the University of Dar es Salaam.

“I think a lot of our traditional fishermen are beginning to see the importance of modernizing their craft to benefit from the blue economy,” she said.

Culinary park

After sunset, Forodhani gardens in the heart of Zanzibar’s historic stone town transform into a culinary arena.

Local women dressed in burqas and tourists leisurely navigating their way through a labyrinth of narrow streets flock to a small park while hungry-looking stray cats aggressively mew for leftovers.

At dusk, a maze of wooden tables and grills are brought to the fore and before long customers can smell the aroma of fresh fish, meat, shrimp kebab wafting their way.

“I love this place, the food is delicious. We do not usually cook dinner, the whole family eats here,” said Fakir Hussein, a resident of Zanzibar.

As aromatic smoke billows, a dozen of wide-eyed chefs, clad in white hats, drum up orders on their cutting boards.

The chefs adeptly point to their culinary creations to grab the attention of customers who must give in to their sale pitches.

“There is no bad day here, lots of people are flocking daily, I am always overwhelmed with orders,” said Farouk Salum, a chef.

The night market at Forodhani is a lively delight drawing locals and tourists and offers a glimpse at an extensive history and culture.

Grabbing something to eat, find a spot to sit, take a glass of sugar cane juice, levelers say is a great way to spend a night at Forodhani.

As customers are raving about everything from hot Urojo soup and salad to the fresh shrimps, Maulid Makame, a business proprietor, has nothing to complain about.

With 13 years of experience, the 43-year-old cook has grown his entrepreneurial venture into a booming business.

“Seafood business is my life, I do not imagine doing any other business,” he told Anadolu Agency./agencies

Lebanon on Saturday denounced [Israel's] preparations for oil and gas exploration in a disputed maritime area between the two countries.

[Israel’s] granting “of offshore exploration contracts to Halliburton Company or others in the disputed area constitutes a violation and a blow to the framework agreement sponsored by the US and the United Nations," Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said in a statement.

The statement came in response to reports that Tel Aviv awarded Halliburton with a contract to carry out oil and gas exploration in the disputed area.

Lebanon is locked in a dispute with Israel over an area in the Mediterranean Sea spanning about 860 square kilometers (some 332 square miles), known as Zone No. 9, which is rich with oil and gas.

The maritime borders between Lebanon and “Israel” have not seen any military conflicts, unlike their land borders.

Lebanese group Hezbollah controls the area bordering “Israel”, and sporadic tensions take place from time to time as Tel Aviv accuses the Shia group of attempting to breach the border./agencies

Following the Taliban takeover in the capital Kabul, security has been provided but the economy is still poor, according to Afghan tradesmen.

Ahmed Parviz, the head of the Chamber of Tradesmen of Ariana Grand Bazaar, which houses some 350 shops, said that he is hopeful for the future.

Complaining of exorbitant corruption and theft before the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, he said the situation is good now. “However, there is a problem with the economic situation of people. I hope that it will improve over time.”

He expects the Taliban administration to focus on the young people.

“They should find a solution for unemployment. The Taliban won the hearts of the people as they ensured security in the country, but they also need to amend the economy. I hope that everything will be better in the future,” Parviz expressed.

Fabric seller Inayetullah Tahir said that he could not sell anything for a week and he expects the Taliban to create job opportunities for the unemployed.

“Now the situation in Afghanistan is very good. In the previous administration, people were killed for 10,000 afghanis ($117) and a mobile phone in their pockets. There were widespread heft and bullying. Now we have no security problems,” he said.

Han Muhammed Ayyubi, who has been a tradesman in the Grand Bazaar for 18 years, stressed that the revival of the market depends on foreign aid.

Trade across Kabul has come to a standstill, he said and added that if foreign aid comes, the wheel will turn, as in the government of former President Ashraf Ghani.

“The future of the country is not clear, but the current administration is better than the previous one,” he added.

After the Taliban seized control of Kabul on Aug. 15, business was halted in major cities./aa

The relatives of 10 people killed in a drone strike in the Afghan capital last month rejected the US' "condolences and apologies," calling it a war crime and demanding justice under international law.

Zamari Ahmadi, the humanitarian worker whose vehicle was targeted inside his home in Kabul on Aug. 29, was suspected by the US military of having ties to ISIS/Daesh-Khorasan (ISIS-K).

They have not removed anything from the house since a US drone struck his vehicle with a hellfire missile, Ahmadi's uncle Mohammad Nasim told Anadolu Agency Saturday, showing the destroyed vehicles and the damaged house.

The US acknowledged on Friday that the airstrike resulted in the deaths of 10 civilians, including an aid worker and up to seven children.

"We now assess that it is unlikely that the vehicle and those who died were associated with ISIS-K, or were a direct threat to US forces," said Central Command head Gen. Frank McKenzie, who had earlier claimed that Ahmadi had connections with ISIS-K.

McKenzie offered his "profound condolences" to the victims' families, and said the attack was carried out "in the earnest belief that it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces and the evacuees at the airport."

"But it was a mistake. And I offer my sincere apology. And as the combatant commander I am fully responsible for this strike and its tragic outcome," he told Pentagon reporters.

‘Unacceptable’

“This is unacceptable to us,” Nasim said in response, urging the US to “acknowledge it as a war crime.”

Since the drone attack, the US has failed to contact the family, and while it has now issued an apology, “those who were lost cannot come back, and accepting the mistake cannot be accepted,” Nasim said, urging the international community to hold those responsible for the killings of innocent people accountable under international law.

Romal Ahmadi, who lost all three of his children, including a nursing infant, as well as his brother, said, "How can this be accepted?"

The US killed innocent people, and they "should come to me and apologize and offer condolences."

His elder brother “was inside the house when a missile slammed into the vehicle, destroying everything,” he said, adding, “He doesn't feel safe in the country.”

The Pentagon is "exploring the possibility" of making reparation payments to the victims' families, and is "very interested in doing that," McKenzie said on Friday.

“Killing innocent people is a war crime,” Abdul Aziz Shoiab, a judge appointed by the Ashraf Ghani administration prior to the Taliban interim government, told Anadolu Agency. He stated that the international community could initiate a war crime case against individuals who were part of the attack on innocent people.

The strike took place three days after Daesh/ISIS-K carried out a multiple suicide bomber attack on Kabul's international airport that left over 150 people dead, including scores of Afghans seeking to flee the country following its Taliban takeover./agencies
