Kuwaiti researcher Abdullah Al Anjari has become the focus of a growing dispute in Britain over Palestine-related speech, antisemitism allegations, and academic freedom. On July 23, 2026, the UK-based Campaign Against Antisemitism published allegations concerning Al Anjari, a doctoral researcher in Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter. The group said several of his social-media posts appeared to fall within examples contained in the IHRA working definition of antisemitism and described some of his rhetoric as extremist. It also said it had written to Exeter and University College London regarding his academic roles. Al Anjari rejected the allegations, describing the campaign against him as misleading and unfair. He said he condemns all forms of racism, including antisemitism, and argued that his positions on Palestine stem from his academic research and political analysis. The dispute then prompted public expressions of solidarity in Kuwait and across the Arab world, with supporters arguing that criticism of his views should be answered academically rather than through pressure on universities. Others, including CAA, maintain that some of his past posts cross the line from political criticism into rhetoric they consider antisemitic or supportive of political violence. The University of Exeter currently lists Al Anjari as a postgraduate researcher, and university material identifies him as a doctoral researcher in Palestine Studies. The wider question is: How should universities distinguish between controversial political speech, academic freedom, and prohibited hatred?
