In a detailed investigative report, Al Jazeera’s program The Hidden Is More Immense uncovered the full military and leadership structure involved in the killing of six-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab, her family, and the paramedic team who tried to rescue them in Gaza’s Tel al-Hawa neighborhood in early 2024.

The investigation presented a detailed list of the officers and soldiers accused, turning the crime’s case into a solid foundation for international legal prosecution.

The investigation relied on meticulous forensic analysis, including satellite imagery, map assessments, and voiceprints, to refute the official Israeli narrative and confirm the direct and deliberate targeting of civilians.

Conclusive evidence that debunks the official Israeli narrative.

The official Israeli narrative claimed that the killing of Hind Rajab’s family resulted from an “exchange of fire” in a combat zone, but the investigation produced conclusive evidence disproving this claim, including:

·       335 bullet holes: Examination of the car belonging to Hind Rajab’s family — which was hit by heavy gunfire — revealed about 335 bullet and shell holes, confirming a deliberate and direct targeting.

·       Acoustic signature pinpointed the range: In collaboration with the London-based Forensic Architecture team, analysis of the recorded distress call proved that the gunfire originated from a very close distance, estimated between 13 and 23 meters from the vehicle.

·       One-sided gunfire: Acoustic analysis showed no evidence of any exchange of fire; instead, it detected rapid and continuous shooting from a high-rate weapon — confirming that the attack came from a single direction, the Israeli forces.

·       Tank positions: Satellite imagery confirmed that Merkava tanks of the Israeli Armored Corps were positioned around the scene at the moment of the crime.

The direct perpetrator and the “Empire of Vampires”

The investigation succeeded in identifying the military structure involved in the Hind Rajab massacre, tracing it all the way to the officer who gave the kill order on the ground:

A. The unit that carried out the crime:

The attack was carried out by the 52nd Armored Battalion, known as “Pukim” (“The Raiders”), which belongs to the 401st Armored Brigade.

B. The officer who issued the kill order:

The investigation revealed that the platoon responsible for the crime is known by its English name “Vampire Empire.” The officer who issued the order to open fire from inside the tank on the ground was Major Sean Glass, commander of the Vampire Empire platoon. According to the legal organization Hind Rajab Foundation, he gave the order to fire and is directly responsible for the killing of the martyr Hind Rajab, her family, and the paramedics who tried to save them.

C. Officials in the chain of command:

The chain of command for the unit involved includes:

·       Colonel Daniel Ella, commander of the 52nd Armored Battalion, is the direct field officer responsible for the crime.

·       Colonel Benny Aharon, commander of the 401st Armored Brigade, is the highest-ranking officer in the chain of command responsible for the massacre.

International Legal Prosecutions: Dual Nationality Turns the Tables

The documented information has been turned into international legal cases pursuing those involved — especially individuals holding dual nationality — thanks to the efforts of the Hind Rajab Foundation, which was launched from Brussels to prosecute war criminals. They include:

·       Itay Shokirkov: A soldier in the Vampire Empire platoon who holds Argentine citizenship. A legal case has been filed against him in Argentina for his involvement in a war crime as an Argentine national.

·       Shimon Zuckerman: A soldier in the Engineering Corps who holds German citizenship. His case has been submitted to the German judiciary on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity for his direct involvement in the destruction of the town of Khuza’a.

·       Adi Karni: Another soldier in the Engineering Corps. Authorities in Peru have issued an order to pursue and open an official investigation against him after discovering his presence in the country and his involvement in war crimes.

·       Colonel Benny Aharon: Commander of the 401st Brigade. A direct lawsuit has been filed against him before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Challenges of Prosecution: Geopolitical Pressure and Paths to Impunity

Despite the legal progress, the report noted that efforts to achieve justice face fierce resistance. Political and geopolitical pressures, along with the complicity of some local authorities, have sought to obstruct the prosecutions. Documented cases show that several Israeli soldiers were smuggled out to avoid arrest, including:

·       Yuval Vaghdani: A soldier in the Givati Brigade, who was smuggled out of Brazil after legal proceedings against him began there.

·       Elisha Livman: A soldier in the Givati Brigade, who was smuggled out of Cyprus on a private jet through unofficial routes — a clear attempt to evade arrest and accountability.

These cases confirm what Judge Donald Peter Herbert pointed out  that the practical impact of geopolitical pressure from the United States, combined with the European Union’s lack of political will, is what enables the accused to escape justice.

List of Pending Trials Around the World

In a notable development, the investigation obtained a leaked list containing the names, addresses, and ranks of nearly 30,000 pilots, soldiers, and technicians from the Israeli Air Force involved in the war of extermination against Gaza. These names have been placed on a global list of pending trials.

The investigation concluded by emphasizing that these legal cases are not only a means to hold perpetrators accountable but also serve as a deterrent — discouraging those who might hesitate from taking part in killing and destruction from engaging in or continuing such actions.

This revelation comes at a time when the legal battle is intensifying behind the walls of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, placing the world — and the very notion of international justice — before a historic test: Will the killers be held accountable, and will the victims be granted justice?
