Negotiations for Negotiations
Witkoff's Maze!
Continuing Negotiations
US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Witkoff, continues
his marathon of indirect negotiations between "Israelis" and
Palestinians to put a new agreement on the table for implementation, aiming for
a point of consensus between the parties.
News of an imminent ceasefire agreement surfaces occasionally,
coinciding with the spread of alleged leaked details of proposals and clauses.
However, the reality and official statements do not align with what is being
broadcast about Witkoff's proposal.
A Troubled Track Record
Witkoff has two negative experiences
with adhering to previous commitments and agreements. Prior to the inauguration
of US President Donald Trump in January 2025, Witkoff participated in
negotiations to announce a ceasefire, paving the way for Trump's slogans about
ending wars, especially in Gaza and Ukraine, as soon as he reached the White
House. Indeed, the outgoing Joe Biden spoke of the agreement's achievement, and
the current Trump speaks of it as his administration's achievement. But the
important thing is that it was not an achievement as much as it was a temporary
halt to bloodshed and genocide.
This agreement was signed to widespread international welcome.
Despite repeated violations in the details of the first phase, Netanyahu
breached the agreement by not entering the second phase and renewed the war on
Gaza. This was a slap in the face to the international community and mediators,
including the Americans, who did not respond with even a single word. Instead,
they supplied "Israel" with weapons and covered for it before
international courts and institutions. Witkoff was the godfather of the
agreement and did not reject Netanyahu's violation of it.
At another point, when the "Israeli" soldier, Eidon
Alexander, was released as a goodwill gesture by the resistance at the end of
the second third of May, prior to Trump's visit to the Arabian Gulf region, Witkoff
was the godfather of this initiative. He merged his efforts with side efforts
that resulted in direct meetings between "Hamas" and America in
several sessions. The resistance was promised that this gesture would be met
with something great from Trump, in reference to the entry of aid.
Nevertheless, Witkoff failed in this and escalated his statements against
"Hamas."
These days, there is talk of a new proposal from Witkoff
that he presented to the Palestinians, who agreed to it, saying it includes
American commitments to a ceasefire and a move towards radical, long-term
solutions. Netanyahu rejected a version of the proposal, saying, "We will
agree to Witkoff's proposal that includes a temporary ceasefire."
Between this proposal and the repeated, modified, confirmed,
previous, and subsequent versions, the matter has become a vast maze that
allows the Americans to interpret any clause based on what is available to
them, giving them more room to maneuver in disclaiming commitments or future
obligations by prioritizing "Israel's" interests above all
else.
The Elusive Horizon
In light of the field that "Israel" seeks to
maintain as a military, security, hunger, and thirst pressure point, in clear
defiance of international law, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic
Cooperation, and the United Nations; Netanyahu continues to maneuver to
prove the theory of military pressure. He has added a weapon that devastates
the Palestinian people, which is hunger, to achieve what he has lost and
continues to lose in the political and military arenas.
"Israel's" interpretations of Witkoff's
proposals raise concerns and questions about the latter's seriousness at this
stage, after his negativity reached the point of complicity in at least two
previous stations, not to mention his policy of diminishing the already
diminished and presenting it as a modified proposal.
For "Israel," the continuation of the war is
a historical religious mission that has led them to the square of thinking
about expansion and geographical advancement in the region. This means that the
political horizon is diminishing day by day, coinciding with international
silence, lack of oversight, and the absence of Arab seriousness in putting an
end to what is happening. This whets Netanyahu's appetite to escape
forward and take what he wants from Witkoff's proposals while denying
what contradicts his plans, as happened previously, because the patronage has
remained the same, and because America still does not have the intention of a
political solution to the Palestinian issue. Its main concern is only the
return of "Israeli" prisoners and the elimination of Palestinian
resistance.
These are equations where the occupation state and America
converge, which reduces the size and scope of hope for international parties to
enter into mediation to impose a binding solution that meets Palestinian
rights, especially since America still succeeds in misleading the world that it
is working to end the file and that it is the mediator seeking to stop the war.
At the same time, it keeps the Palestinian scene weak and its treatment
temporary and only security and humanitarian. As for the radical solution, it
remains slogans repeated by every American president until the end of his term,
and the constant is settlement and expansion at the expense of the
Palestinians, and only temporary security and humanitarian solutions and truces
for three and a half decades of the illusion of American patronage.
This illusion cannot be broken except by breaking this patronage through expanding international patronage and stopping America's exclusive control over the Palestinian issue. This can be achieved by a clear declaration that there is no mediator or patron between an occupation and the people facing it and that whoever wants patronage must start from a broad, non-exclusive patronage, and also based on international law, not on "Israel's" and America's standards.
