Students in our countries rush to enroll in public and private universities after obtaining their high school diploma, or its equivalent, in an attempt to search for a better future and a prestigious job opportunity.

Factors Influencing Career Choices

Some may hasten in choosing their specialization, others may be driven by desires and emotions, while some may be influenced by their parents’ wishes, without realizing the requirements of the labor market and the changes that have taken place internationally in recent years—changes that may elevate the value of one profession while pushing another backward.

Labor Market Map

We attempt to think aloud with you, to explore the map of the labor market amid the rising unemployment rates among university graduates in the Arab world, as the youth unemployment rate in the Middle East and North Africa reached 24.4% in 2023, according to data issued by the International Labor Organization.

We begin by reviewing the most in-demand professions and specializations worldwide, from the lowest to the highest in salary and other factors, as follows:

First: Nursing, which has seen increasing demand, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic and the expansion of healthcare services around the world. This ensures it a promising future and growing demand. It suffices to mention one example: 195,000 nursing job openings are available annually in the United States for certified and highly trained graduates in this field.

Second: Specialists in electric vehicles and self-driving cars will play a prominent role in the coming years, as the world shifts away from fossil fuels and moves toward clean energy, smart transportation, and environmentally friendly mobility.

Those in this field enjoy high salaries reaching $10,000 per month, with possible variations depending on years of experience, type of specialization, and the accreditation level of the university degree.

Third: Financial technology engineers, who develop the financial sector, banking services, and electronic payments. They are indispensable everywhere and will have many job opportunities as countries expand in digitalization, governance, and automation. This will grant them greater influence in the labor market and higher salaries, especially for those who succeed in creating new banking systems and secure digital payment applications.

Fourth: Digital marketing and e-commerce pioneers will be increasingly in demand worldwide, according to the Global Skills Report 2024, especially as more consumer segments shift to online shopping and electronic sales services expand with the help of artificial intelligence tools, such as data analysis, smart content creation, and consumer behavior insights. The global digital marketing market is projected to reach $1.5 trillion by 2030, according to Forbes.

Fifth: Programming and cybersecurity experts will be in higher demand, with growth rates expected to reach 33% by 2033. There is currently an urgent need for 4 million specialists to fill the skilled labor gap in the cybersecurity industry, according to recent studies.

Sixth: Artificial intelligence experts will have a great role, as the global use of AI expands across finance, healthcare, media, and sports, alongside the growing need for their skills in developing intelligent systems and designing algorithms that enable machines to analyze data and improve performance over time. Their salaries exceed $10,000 per month.

Seventh: Renewable energy system installers are expected to see increased job shares in the labor market (12.7 million jobs in 2021) over the next decade, with growing global awareness of climate change issues and the shift toward a green economy. Recent data shows that demand for wind turbine technicians is projected to rise by 60%, and for solar photovoltaic installers by 48% by 2033, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Forecasts by the International Renewable Energy Agency indicate that the number of jobs in the renewable energy sector will rise to about 43 million worldwide by 2050.
