The Islamic Ruling on Private Seclusion and Gender Mixing
Private seclusion between a man and a
woman who are foreigners to each other, and careless, unrestricted mixing between men and women, are prohibited in the religion of Allah. Both are
among the factors that contribute to the destruction of the moral foundations
of our social and family life, and they are causes that invokes the wrath and
punishment of Allah.
Let us fear Allah regarding our
daughters and women, and let us remember that we are accountable for them
before Allah, who entrusted them to our care.
Allah the Exalted says, {O believers! Protect yourselves and your families from a
Fire whose fuel is people and stones, overseen by formidable and severe angels,
who never disobey whatever Allah orders—always doing as commanded.} [At-Tahrim
66:6]
The Prohibition of Seclusion and
Unrestricted Mixing Between Men and Women
Islam has prohibited these matters in
the clearest and most decisive manner—regardless of the moral character or
level of righteousness of either the man or the woman.
Seclusion is forbidden even if it
involves the most righteous and God-fearing of people with any woman who is not
lawfully related to him. Likewise, reckless mixing between men and women has
been prohibited.
This prohibition serves to protect
people's worldly and religious interests. Through it Islam safeguards them from
falling into what is unlawful.
