Quranic Verse Combining All Forms of Good

Allah SWT Says, {O believers! Be mindful of Allah and seek what brings you closer to Him and struggle in His Way, so you may be successful.} [Al-Ma’idah 5:35]

In these three commands, Allah Gathered all forms of goodness: fear Allah, seek the means to Him, and strive in His cause. When Muslims fear their Lord by avoiding His prohibitions, seek closeness to Him through obedience and fulfilling His rights, and strive against His enemies, true happiness is realized.

They fulfill their obligations and strive against the enemies of Allah in order to invite them to the religion of Allah and guide them to the truth. These, altogether, are the causes of happiness.

Piety: The Foundation of Faith and Guidance

That a servant fulfills what Allah has Made obligatory upon him—this is piety (taqwa). Piety is to carry out what Allah has Commanded and to avoid what He has Forbidden. This is piety; this is faith; this is complete guidance.

When Allah Mentions piety together with action, the meaning is clear: avoiding prohibitions and fulfilling obligations. His statement “Be mindful of Allah” means to abandon what He has Forbidden, to revere Him, and to fear Him. This is the wholesome of religion.

Seeking Closeness to Allah Through Obedience

Included in “seek what brings you closer to Him” are all other acts of closeness and obedience. The greatest of them are those that Allah has Made obligatory upon the servant, and their perfection lies in the voluntary acts that Allah has Legislated for His servants.

This is a duty upon all believers, wherever they may be: to fear Allah by performing what He has made obligatory, avoiding what He has forbidden, and striving in His cause according to one’s ability. Striving takes place through speech, through action, and through the sword.

Calling to Allah is striving in His cause; bearing arms and fighting the enemies is striving in His cause; and enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong is striving in His cause. And Allah is the One whose help is sought.
