Kuwait's Independence... A Story of Glory, Sovereignty, and National Will

Every year on June 19, Kuwait stands with pride and honor, recalling the anniversary of its declaration of independence in 1961, a historic moment that represented a pivotal transformation in the path of the modern state and the beginning of a bright phase of building, advancement, and regional and international influence.

Below are the most prominent milestones through which the scene of independence and subsequent historical developments that shaped the essence of modern Kuwaiti identity can be understood:

1. The Independence Document... The Beginning of Full Sovereignty: On June 19, 1961, the late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, may God rest his soul, announced the termination of the protection agreement with Britain. The first steps of a fully sovereign independent state were taken, and Kuwait embarked on a unique path of comprehensive renaissance and constitutional establishment.

2. Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem... Amir of Independence and Nation Builder: Since assuming power in 1950, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem worked to pave the way for actual independence, away from dependence and protection. He chose to be the first to establish modern constitutional rule, based on state institutions, law, and popular participation.

3. The 1962 Constitution... The Cornerstone of the Democratic System: After independence, elections for the Constituent Assembly were held in August 1961. Within 9 months, the Assembly completed the Constitution of the State of Kuwait, consisting of 183 articles. The Constitution embodied the spirit of democracy, justice, and freedoms, and was the basis for launching a pioneering political experiment in the Gulf.

4. Building the State... Integrated Legislation and Regulations: After independence, Kuwait enacted 43 civil and criminal laws and legislations in record time. Prominent among them were:

  • The Nationality Law.
  • The Kuwaiti Currency Law.
  • The Judiciary Organization Law.
  • The Passports Law and the Organization of Government Departments.

5. International Presence... An Active, Not Dependent, State: On May 14, 1963, Kuwait became the 111th member of the United Nations. From the outset, Kuwait adopted a moderate foreign policy based on:

  • Respect for state sovereignty.
  • Support for humanitarian causes.
  • Peaceful resolution of disputes.
  • Strengthening regional security and stability.

6. The Developmental Approach... From Protection to Leadership: Since independence, Kuwait has embarked on an ambitious development journey, targeting:

  • Education, health, and infrastructure.
  • Establishment of a welfare state.
  • Launching development funds.
  • Openness to parliamentary experience.

7. The Continuing Legacy... From the Generation of Independence to the Generation of the Future: After 64 years, Kuwait, under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may God protect him, and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, may God protect him, continues to build a nation that derives its glory from the legacy of independence. The state is proceeding with its national plans based on development, governance, external balance, and social solidarity. Kuwait's independence was not merely an exit from the cloak of protection, but a declaration of the birth of a state with personality, sovereignty, and responsibility. Over its six decades, Kuwait has proven that nations are built through will, work, planning, and sincere belonging.

Kuwait: Targeting Iranian Nuclear Facilities is a Dangerous Development Threatening Regional and Global Security

Amid escalating regional tension and the widening scope of military targeting in the region, the State of Kuwait expressed its deep concern over the accelerating developments in the Islamic Republic of Iran, especially the recent targeting of nuclear facilities, describing it as a dangerous development that threatens the security and stability of the entire region and the world.

In an official statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the State of Kuwait reiterated its firm and supportive stance for respecting state sovereignty and international law, referring to its previous statement issued on June 13, 2025, which strongly condemned the attacks on Iranian sovereignty and considered them a blatant violation of international conventions.

The statement affirmed the following:

The State of Kuwait reiterates what was stated in its statement issued on June 13, 2025, which condemned the aggression against Iranian sovereignty and the violation of international laws and conventions, and called on the international community and the Security Council to assume their responsibilities towards stopping these violations to preserve security and stability in the region.

Kuwait also stressed the necessity of urgent action by the Security Council and the international community to fulfill their duties towards maintaining international peace and security and stopping the escalation that threatens more chaos and deterioration in the regional scene.

In its statement, the State of Kuwait called for:

  • Halting military actions in all their forms.
  • Resorting to dialogue, reason, and wisdom.
  • Doubling diplomatic efforts to reach political solutions that guarantee the security and stability of the region.

Kuwait affirmed that lasting peace in the region cannot be achieved through weapons, but through dialogue, adherence to international law, and constructive understandings that preserve the interests of peoples and protect their common security.

5 Reassuring Messages from Official Authorities: No Concern for Food Security in Kuwait

Amidst rapidly escalating regional developments and associated rumors or fears, official authorities in Kuwait affirm with one voice: "Food security is fine, strategic reserves are safe, and there is no cause for concern."

From the Ministry of Commerce to cooperative societies, and from the Ministry of Social Affairs to inspection teams, the national system is operating efficiently and with readiness to ensure the availability of goods, smooth supply chains, and stable prices.

Here are the main points that embody this readiness:

1. Commerce: Markets are Stable and Goods are Available: The spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Abdullah Al-Harz, affirmed that the supply situation in the country is completely stable, and there is no shortage of basic foodstuff, noting:

  • Continuous water production in local factories without interruption.
  • Normal and smooth operation of supply chains.
  • Unaffected activity of cooperative societies.
  • Ready emergency plans and daily field monitoring to ensure prices.

2. Social Affairs: Building on a Successful Experience: The Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Dr. Khaled Al-Ajmi, explained that the Ministry:

  • Activates ready crisis plans that were successfully tested during the Corona pandemic.
  • Adopts a flexible plan that is updated every 3 months.
  • Coordinates closely with the Union of Cooperative Societies and field teams to monitor consumer needs immediately.

3. Cooperatives: Full Readiness and Smooth Supply: The head of the Union of Cooperative Societies, Abdulaziz Al-Mutairi, confirmed that:

  • Cooperative societies receive direct directives from the Minister of Social Affairs and act immediately to fill any shortage.
  • Supply is smooth, and no cooperative society has reported any shortage or problem.
  • An official circular has been issued to ensure the readiness of strategic stock and its availability in all varieties.

4. Proactive Operational Plan from Cooperative Societies: Cooperative societies announced an operational plan in case of emergencies, which included:

  • Providing a 6-month strategic stock covering 13 basic items.
  • Operating branches and markets 24 hours a day.
  • Opening additional warehouses and forming volunteer teams for delivery when needed.
  • Supporting shelters with basic materials.
  • Continuous maintenance of generators and vehicles and daily reporting.

5. Inspection Teams and Accurate Monitoring:

  • The Ministry of Social Affairs formed 6 field teams distributed across governorates, monitoring stock, tracking withdrawal rates, and providing daily reports.
  • Granting cooperative societies the right to set a withdrawal limit based on population density.
  • Media guidance for cooperative societies to intensify awareness and reassurance messages to the public through their official platforms.

Is there an increase in the prices of some items? Yes, but according to ministry sources, the increase in prices of some vegetables and fruits is due to:

  • Reduced local production due to the summer season and high temperatures.
  • Delays in air travel and importing some varieties from neighboring countries.

The Ministry affirmed that there is strict monitoring and accountability for any party that exploits the current situation to raise prices excessively.

In light of the above, the Kuwaiti government affirms that the strategic food reserve is stable, and coordination between ministries and relevant authorities is working according to well-established plans based on previous successful experiences. The message is clear: There is no need to worry, as all parties are working for your food security... with confidence and proactivity.
