IICO Provides 175 Safe Homes to Shelter 1050 Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh

---------------
Charities
The International Islamic
Charitable Organization (IICO) has successfully completed the initial phase of
its safe housing project for Rohingya refugees in the Cox's Bazar region
of Bangladesh. This initiative is a crucial part of their ongoing commitment to
ensuring a dignified life for some of the world's most vulnerable populations.
Phase One:
Solar-Powered Homes for 1050 Refugees
This first phase involved the
construction of 175 solar-powered homes. These new dwellings have
directly benefited 175 families, comprising approximately 1050
Rohingya refugees. The project, entirely funded by the IICO, cost over $104,000.
The primary goal was to shield these families from harsh weather conditions
while safeguarding their privacy and security, especially given the overcrowded
and challenging conditions prevalent in refugee camps.
Sustainable Design and
Local Materials
The design of these new homes
prioritizes practical and effective solutions. They were built using readily
available local materials like bamboo and cement, and feature weather-resistant
roofs made from plastic and straw. These material choices ensure the homes
are well-suited to the region's climate, offering protection in both summer and
winter. Each unit spans approximately 16 square meters and comes
equipped with solar panels for lighting. This sustainable lighting
solution replaces traditional kerosene lamps, which often pose a significant
risk of devastating fires.
A Long-Standing
Partnership with UNHCR
As the Rohingya crisis continues to
be one of the largest humanitarian disasters globally, the IICO remains a
leading force in humanitarian aid. Their efforts are greatly amplified by a
long-term strategic partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner
for Refugees (UNHCR). This collaboration began in 2000 with the signing of
a Memorandum of Understanding, making the IICO one of the first Kuwaiti
charitable organizations to partner with the UNHCR.
Empowering Refugees
Through Livelihood Programs
A key outcome of this enduring
partnership is the successful implementation of livelihood programs for
refugees. For instance, in 2022, programs focusing on horticulture
were introduced, helping families gain economic independence and acquire
sustainable skills. Furthermore, in 2023, the IICO and UNHCR signed an
agreement to bolster livelihood programs for Rohingya refugees in southeastern
Bangladesh. This agreement provides essential support to boost agricultural,
animal, and fish production.
Commitment to
Sustainable Development
The International Islamic
Charitable Organization reaffirms its unwavering dedication to these
humanitarian endeavors. Driven by its mission to empower individuals and
develop sustainable solutions, the IICO aims to address the needs of affected
communities worldwide. They are committed to a comprehensive approach that
seamlessly integrates emergency relief with sustainable development.
Through their high-quality programs, they strive to enhance the resilience of
refugees and provide them with meaningful opportunities to build a better
future.
