Hasan Shams Al-Din: A Journey of Giving and Faith

 In the lives of some men, the meanings of selflessness, humility, and sincere advocacy (Dawah) are truly embodied. They leave behind a legacy of noble stances and fragrant memories that remain alive in the hearts of those who knew them. The late Hasan Ali Abdullah Shams Al-Din was one of those men who combined integrity, high moral character, and tireless advocacy work, serving as an exemplar of the advising educator, the dedicated employee, and the benevolent human being.

From his upbringing in a conservative, faith-filled environment until his passing on Ramadan 6, 1434 AH, may Allah have mercy on him, he remained faithful to his principles, active in the fields of advocacy and reform, and left a luminous mark on his family, his community, and everyone who had the honor of knowing him.

His Upbringing

Hasan Ali Abdullah Shams Al-Din was born in the Sharq neighborhood of Kuwait City on Rabi’ al-Thani 2, 1372 AH / February 16, 1953 AD. He grew up in a family known for righteousness and integrity. His father, known as "Al-Mulla Ali," was keen on raising his children with a faith-based upbringing, regularly taking them to the mosque and encouraging them to maintain their prayers—a practice that contributed to shaping Hasan's character and instilling religious values in him from an early age.

In the late 1960s, the family moved to the Al-Rawda area. There, his early connection with advocacy work began through his participation with the youth of Al-Islah, laying the first foundation stones of his lifelong journey in serving Islamic advocacy and community work.

His Educational Journey

He received his primary education at Kazma School, completed his intermediate education at Al-Siddiq School, and went to high school at Al-Jahiz School.

Afterward, he traveled to the United States of America before continuing his higher education at the Faculty of Law at Beirut Arab University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree.

His Professional Life

He joined the Public Authority for Housing, advancing through several administrative positions until he assumed the post of Director of Legal Affairs and Housing, where he was widely known for his competence, integrity, and dedication in performing his duties.

His Most Prominent Qualities

The late Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, possessed noble qualities that made him close to people's hearts and deeply beloved. He was known for his generosity, love of giving, and dedication to serving others. He was also characterized by gentleness and soft-heartedness; he was not quick to anger, but was instead defined by a spirit of cheerfulness, warmth, and a constant smile. He detested backbiting and undermining others, and would not tolerate anyone being spoken ill of in his presence. Instead, he was always keen to speak well of people and pray for them.

From his childhood, his heart was attached to the mosque and congregational prayer, which he maintained throughout his life. Even in his final days of illness, despite doctors recommending rest and advising him not to drive due to failing eyesight, he did not abandon this worship. He would make his way to the mosque by any means possible, even if he had to walk on foot.

He was also known for his profound humility and asceticism toward material appearances, as the Hereafter was always present before his eyes. He was inspired by the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:

"No one humbles himself for the sake of Allah but Allah raises him." (Sahih Muslim)

This genuine humility was one of the primary reasons for the deep love and appreciation people held for him.

His Filial Piety and Upholding of Kinship

May Allah have mercy on him, he was an exemplar of filial piety, upholding the ties of kinship, and showing kindness to relatives. He was highly dedicated to communicating with his brothers and sisters and checking on their well-being, and he was always among the first to attend family occasions and gatherings.

In his dealings with everyone, he was characterized by gentleness and an easygoing nature. He was never known to hurt anyone with a word or offend any individual, owing to his refined manners and gracious interactions. He was always striving to reconcile differences among people, bring hearts together, and spread familiarity and affection, earning him the love of everyone who knew and associated with him.

His Advocacy Role

Calling to Allah (Dawah) formed a central pillar of his life. He dedicated his efforts, time, and intellect to it, to the point that it appeared to those around him that advocacy was his primary mission in life. He chose his life partner from a righteous family to support him along this path.

His advocacy work was not limited to his time in Kuwait; it accompanied him during his travels, studies, and moves abroad. He remained highly active in the fields of education, reform, and spiritual foundation, believing deeply in the importance of human development and instilling values in souls.

His Passing

On Sunday, Ramadan 6, 1434 AH / July 14, 2013 AD, Hasan Ali Abdullah Shams Al-Din passed away to the mercy of Allah the Almighty, after a life rich in giving, righteous deeds, and calling to Allah. He left behind a fragrant legacy and an honorable impact that remains deeply rooted in the memories of his family, loved ones, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
