5 Things That Protect Money From “Inflation”
Today, we live
in a rapidly changing economic reality where the purchasing power of money is
steadily declining. What a certain amount of money could buy yesterday may no
longer buy even half as much today.
This, simply
put, is “inflation” — a hidden thief that silently devours stagnant cash
savings left idle without movement. That is why Islamic teachings encourage
productivity and economic activity while discouraging hoarding wealth and
removing it from the cycle of economic circulation.
In this
article, we present five practical steps to protect your modest savings from
inflation:
1. Invest in Tangible Assets
Keeping paper
money idle exposes it to a gradual loss of value over time. To preserve its
worth, it should be converted into tangible assets such as gold. Islamic
teachings warn against leaving wealth vulnerable to erosion — whether through
inflation or through zakat when it is not invested. Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may
Allah be pleased with him, warned against leaving money stagnant and encouraged
putting it into circulation in order to preserve and grow its value.
2. Start a Small Business or Halal
Investment
Many people
believe that starting a business requires enormous capital, which often leads
them to procrastinate and delay. In reality, there is no need to wait until you
accumulate a huge amount of money. You can enter a small business partnership,
buy products and resell them, or pursue other lawful investment opportunities.
The profits generated can offset inflation and gradually increase your capital.
Islam strongly encourages trade and lawful earnings as an alternative to usury,
which destroys wealth. Allah says: {Allah has
permitted trade and forbidden interest.} (Al-Baqarah 2:275)
Trade and commerce are the true engines of financial growth.
3. Invest in Developing Your Skills
Self-development
and acquiring valuable skills are among the best ways to protect yourself
against inflation and increase your income. Dedicate part of your savings to
learning new skills or taking training courses that enhance your value in the
job market. Allah links knowledge with elevation in status, saying: {Allah will raise those who have believed among you and
those who were given knowledge, by degrees.} (Al-Mujadilah 58:11)
The greater your knowledge and expertise, the greater your ability to secure a
dignified life.
4. Purchase Essential Durable Needs Sooner
Rather Than Later
If you are
saving up to buy something essential for work or home use — such as a computer
— it may be financially wise to purchase it today before inflation drives
prices even higher tomorrow. Buying necessary long-term assets now can spare
you from paying significantly more in the future. Sound financial planning and
wise resource management are principles reflected in the story of Prophet Yusuf
(Joseph), peace be upon him, during the economic crisis. Allah says: {Whatever you harvest, leave it in its spikes, except a
little from which you will eat.} (Yusuf
12:47)
5. Protect Your Wealth Through Charity and
Seek Blessing in It
In the scale of
faith, there exists the concept of “barakah” — divine blessing — which
transcends material calculations such as inflation. Charity does not decrease
wealth; rather, it increases it, protects it from harm, and opens unexpected
doors of provision. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Charity does not decrease wealth.” Allah
is the Ultimate Provider, and spending in His cause is among the greatest means
of preserving and blessing one’s wealth.
In the end,
inflation is an economic reality we may not be able to stop, but we can change
the way we deal with it. Through lawful investment, skill development, smart
purchasing decisions, and by crowning all of that with the blessing of charity,
it is possible not only to protect wealth from inflation, but also to grow it.
