Top 5 Tips to Protect Muslim Children from Pedophilia
What is Pedophilia?
Pedophilia is defined as a psychological disorder involving sexual attraction to children of both genders, which can reach the level of harm and may escalate to harassment, sexual assault, or even rape.
Shocking Statistics about Pedophilia
in the Arabic World
A study conducted by the Arab Council for Childhood and
Development in 2017 confirms that around 15% of Arab children are exposed to sexual
harassment and assault to varying degrees.
According to another study conducted by the Arab Network for
Research and Publishing in 2018, which covered 10 Arab countries, Egypt,
Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, and
Yemen, the prevalence rate of child sexual abuse ranged between 2.5% to 7.5%
among adult males, and 0.5% to 2.5% among adult females.
The Unclear Roots of Pedophilic Attraction
The reasons behind sexual attraction to children are not yet
fully understood, but some researchers link it to biological, psychological,
and social factors. A study conducted by researchers from the University of
Toronto and the University of Cambridge, published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry in 2017, indicated that pedophilia
may be related to the brain.
The research team used MRI imaging to investigate the causes of
child sexual abuse. The tests revealed that individuals with pedophilia suffer
from certain neurological abnormalities, and that their IQ level is about 8%
lower than average.
5 Shocking Facts You Should Know about Pedophilia
·
First: Most child molesters
have either familial authority over the child (i.e., are relatives) or moral
authority, such as being their teachers.
·
Second: The majority of
individuals diagnosed with pedophilia are men. Female cases are rare.
·
Third: The disorder is
attributed to biological factors (such as hormonal imbalance), psychological
and social causes, or distorted cognitive and moral beliefs.
·
Fourth: Those afflicted with
this disorder often cause children to suffer from fear, shame, guilt, anger,
depression, anxiety, or even suicidal thoughts, especially if the child does
not disclose the abuse.
·
Fifth: Victims may also
suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), low self-esteem, sexual
dysfunction, drug abuse, difficulty forming healthy relationships with others,
or even repeating the same behavior (pedophilia) after reaching adulthood, with
other children, according to scientific research.
5 Key Anti-Pedophilia Measures (Islamic Guide)
To protect Muslim children from the effects of pedophilia, we
recommend the following:
1. Enhance
awareness and educational programs in schools, religious institutions, and
media to prevent and combat pedophilia.
2. Legal reform
to ensure stronger protection for children and the implementation of strict
legislation to deter perpetrators of such acts.
3. Expand
cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) programs to treat individuals with
pedophilic tendencies. CBT helps the person recognize and correct their
distorted thoughts and beliefs, while also developing empathy and compassion.
Therapy may involve individual or group sessions, or both.
4. Monitor
children's behavior and educate them not to go anywhere with strangers,
especially places far from their parents. Children should be encouraged to
report any suspicious behavior from anyone attempting to harm them. Our
children are a trust Allah has placed with us, and protecting them is a
religious duty before being a health necessity.
5. Promote
religious awareness in society and raise children according to correct Islamic
upbringing based on the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet
Muhammad (peace be upon him). This includes instilling values
and morals, teaching children sound rules such as separating them in sleeping
arrangements, not exposing private parts, modesty, hijab, and other principles
of our noble religion that upholds the principle that prevention is better than
cure.
