5 Islamic Guidelines for Strengthening Memory
Have thousands of numbers passed through
your mind without leaving a trace? Have hundreds of people told you their
names, only for those names to disappear from your memory the moment they leave
your sight? You focus intently when someone speaks, yet their words remain in
your mind for only a few hours before fading away. Dozens of such situations
make you wonder: Do I suffer from forgetfulness and poor memory? Is a strong
memory a human effort or a divine gift? How can I overcome this?
In this article, we answer these questions,
clarify the causes of forgetfulness and weak memory, and present both the
Islamic guidance and practical methods for building a strong memory.
The Status of Memory
in Islam
Memory is a great blessing that Allah has
bestowed upon His servants, and its strength varies from person to person.
Through it, knowledge and experience are preserved, history is recorded, and
the present is written. For this reason, Islamic teachings paid special
attention to this blessing, calling for reflection and contemplation. Allah
says: “Do they not ever reflect on camels—how
they were ˹masterfully˺ created;
and the sky—how it was raised ˹high˺; and the
mountains—how they were firmly set up; and the earth—how it was levelled out?” (Al-Ghashiya
88:17-20)
Islam also encourages everything that
strengthens the mind and clears thought—such as healthy eating and exercise—and
forbids what harms the mind, such as wine and intoxicants.
Is a Strong Memory
Human Effort or a Divine Gift?
This question is often repeated, especially
among those who suffer from forgetfulness and difficulty memorizing.
The answer is that a sharp memory is a gift
from Allah, and human effort is essential for strengthening and maintaining it.
Neglect, on the other hand, can weaken it. Even the enemies of Islam
acknowledged that Islam does not conflict with reason.
The French writer Maxime Rodinson said: “The
Quran is the Book of Allah and is sacred, and rationality occupies a great
place within it. It presents rational proofs of divine decree; in the creation
of the heavens and the earth, in the alternation of night and day, and in the
movement of planets and celestial bodies, there are signs for people of
understanding.”
Causes of
Forgetfulness and Weak Memory in Light of Islamic Teachings
There are many causes of forgetfulness,
including being overly occupied with worldly matters and running after fleeting
pleasures. The mind becomes overwhelmed by worldly distractions and loses its
strength in memorizing and remembering.
One of the most prominent causes is
excessive sin. When Imam Ash-Shafi‘i complained to Waki‘ about his poor memory,
Waki‘ advised him to avoid sin, and the famous lines
say:
I complained to Waki‘ about my poor memory,
So he guided me to abandon sins.
And he told me that knowledge is light,
And the light of Allah is not given to a sinner.
Laziness and poor nutrition are also major
causes of forgetfulness. That is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say: “O Allah! I seek refuge with You
from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness.”
He (peace be upon him) emphasized healthy eating, physical activity, and
everything that strengthens the mind and memory, for they are the foundation of
a person. He (peace be upon him) said: “Everything has
a foundation, and the foundation of the believer is his mind; according to the
level of his mind will be his worship.”
Islamic Guidance for
Strengthening Memory
For a Muslim to overcome forgetfulness and
strengthen memory, they must follow the guidance of the Qur’an and Sunnah,
including:
1 – Seeking Help from Allah and Persistently
Making Du‘a’
Allah says: “And
your Lord says, ‘Call upon Me; I will respond to you.’” (Ghafir 40:60)
This verse highlights the importance of asking Allah in all matters, including
memorization, understanding, and intelligence.
2 – Increasing in Istighfar (seeking forgiveness)
Ibn Taymiyyah said: “Whenever a matter
became difficult for me, I would seek Allah’s forgiveness a thousand times or
more, and Allah would open it for me.”
He also said: “Istighfar unlocks what is closed, purifies the heart, removes
anxiety, and brings blessings. When the heart is purified, the mind becomes
clearer, and memory becomes stronger.”
3 – Practicing Piety and Avoiding the Unlawful
A heart attached to Allah is clearer,
purer, and stronger in understanding and memorization than one distracted by
desires. Imam Ash-Shafi‘i was known for his piety, which contributed to his
extraordinary memory. When turning a page, he would cover the opposite page to
avoid accidentally memorizing it before intending to.
4 – Remaining Consistent in Dhikr
Dhikr sharpens the mind, awakens the soul,
removes heedlessness, and is a cause for answered prayers. The baker known for
his abundant dhikr once told Imam Ahmad that every supplication he made was
answered except one: the wish to meet Imam Ahmad. Imam Ahmad replied: “I am
Ahmad ibn Hanbal. By Allah, I was drawn to you so that Allah may grant you that
request.”
Thus, whoever seeks a strong memory should
increase in dhikr and ask Allah for good understanding and sharp memory.
5 – Preserving the Night Prayer
Allah says: “Indeed,
worship in the night is more impactful and suitable for recitation.” (Al-Muzzammil 73:6)
Abdullah ibn Abbas was known for his deep
understanding and strong memory, earning the title “Interpreter of the Quran.”
His commitment to night prayer from a young age played a major role. Ibn Abi
Mulaykah said: “I travelled with Ibn Abbas from Madinah to Makkah and from
Makkah to Madinah. He would pray two units and spend half the night in prayer,
frequently glorifying Allah.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) had supplicated for him: “O Allah, give him understanding of
the religion and teach him the interpretation.”
Memory is a blessing from Allah that must
be protected with effort. Islamic teachings provide numerous ways to overcome
forgetfulness and strengthen memory. Alongside these spiritual methods, one
should maintain proper sleep habits, exercise regularly, practice mental
training, adopt a healthy diet, and repeat information until it becomes firmly
rooted. All these methods have proven effective in improving memory and
reducing forgetfulness.
