5 Internal Factors Leading to the Collapse of Civilizations
Historical
evidence confirms that civilizations do not fall suddenly; rather, they pass
through natural stages of frailty, governed by the logic of dealing with the
causes of collapse or adhering to the laws of survival.
Civilization
is like a living organism; it falls ill and weakens before the disease finally
consumes it. This is the divine law of the Creator, which He revealed in His
words: (God does not change the
condition of a people [for the worse] unless they change what is in themselves)
(Ar-Ra'd:11)
And
Ibn Kathir states in this context: 'There are no people of a town, nor members
of a household, who remain in obedience to Allah and then turn away toward
disobedience, except that He changes for them what they love into what they
loathe.(1)
Firstly: Ignoring the Mission... Civilizational
Replacement
A nation’s neglect of its divine
mandate initiates its decline. This was evident in the Children of Israel when
they chose corruption over reform, leading to the eventual loss of their
preferential status. The Almighty says: ( He
will substitute other people for you if you turn away, and they will not be
like you.) ( Muhammad:38)
And
the Almighty says: ([Prophet],
ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We brought them. If anyone
alters God’s blessings after he has received them, God is stern in punishment.)
(Al-Baqarah:211) Affliction is but a reflection of corrupt behavior, as the Almighty
says: (Whatever misfortune
befalls you [people], it is because of what your own hands have done- God
forgives much) (Ash-Shuraa:30) (2)
Secondly: The Disintegration of the
Moral Framework
Civilizations
are founded on values, not merely material development. With the erosion of
morality, nations perish—as was the case with the people of Lot, Aad, and
Thamud. Injustice is the primary herald of civilizational ruin. The Almighty
says: (Such is the punishment
of your Lord for towns in the midst of their sins: His punishment is terrible
and severe.) (Hud:102)
Ibn
Kathir states: 'Just as We destroyed those oppressive generations who denied
Our messengers, so shall We do to their counterparts and those like them(3)
The
Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Verily, Allah gives respite to the oppressor
until, when He seizes him, He does not let him escape' (Narrated by Al-Bukhari
and Muslim).
Thirdly: The Decay of Elites Before the
Collapse of the State
The
elite represent the balance of society; through their integrity, the structure
stabilizes, and through their deviation, it crumbles. The Almighty says: (His people’s arrogant leaders said,
‘Shuayb, we will expel you and your fellow believers from our town)
(Al-A'raf:88)
And
historian Arnold Toynbee observes(4) Civilizations do not fall
through wars or invasions alone, but from within, when the creative minority
transforms into a dominant minority—seeking to preserve their privileges
instead of leading creativity. Ultimately, the civilization collapses(5)
Fourthly: Cultural Dependency and Blind
Imitation
One
of the most dangerous causes of collapse is the mindless imitation of others
without understanding the context of their origins. Culture is like a plant
that only thrives in its native soil; importing superficial cultural elements
leads to the erosion of roots. A prime example is social media, which emerged
in materialistic environments to compensate for weakened social bonds. By
importing these tools without fostering individual awareness, the result has
been fragmentation and isolation instead of the intended connection.
Fifthly: Internal Submission and the
Predisposition to be Colonized
The ultimate defeat occurs when a
nation loses confidence in its capacity to lead. Malek Bennabi described this
psychological state, saying: 'The native mentality and the susceptibility to
colonization are always the best tools of colonial administration against me,
and against anyone whose misfortune allows them to see the game clearly(6).'
External forces do not defeat a cohesive nation; they only infiltrate through
the gaps created by its own internal weakness
