4 Steps to Develop Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is one of the defining traits of successful and
high-achieving individuals who are keen on perseverance and who continue
working without boredom in order to achieve their goals and ambitions. This
discipline can save the human soul from whims, indulgence, procrastination, and
carelessness. It is a quality that grants its possessor distinction in academic
or professional settings, for many people lose motivation after a few hours or
days of work, thereby losing their sense of focus and excellence.
A disciplined and organized person is able
to accomplish tasks, meet targets, and execute what is required of them to the
highest standard, because the internal energy of discipline constantly drives
them toward achievement. In fact, they may feel dissatisfied with themselves
if, at any moment, they feel undisciplined.
Thus, discipline is a rare quality, a vital
requirement for any institution, a fundamental component of success in any
system, and a person who possesses it can be relied upon. But how can this
trait be acquired?
First: A good role model is a fundamental factor in
strengthening a person's sense of discipline and order. This begins within the
family environment, particularly through the parents, when they present a
living, practical example of time management, fulfilling promises, and
adherence to rules.
This is further reinforced by having an
organized environment at home, in school, and within the wider social
surroundings—mosques, clubs, recreational programs, etc.—all of which help
shape a disciplined personality that appreciates order and enjoys structure.
Islam expresses the concept of discipline
through the term "steadfastness", as seen in the words of
Allah Almighty: “Indeed, those who have said,
‘Our Lord is Allah’ and then remained steadfast – the angels will descend upon
them, [saying], ‘Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of
Paradise, which you were promised.’” —
Surah Fussilat: 30
Second: Having clear goals is a decisive factor in shaping a
disciplined personality. Such a person knows what they want, rejects
distractions, challenges boredom, avoids desires, and feels successful when
completing assigned tasks. They may even feel guilt and remorse if they
procrastinate and delay today’s work to tomorrow. They despise chaos and
disorganized individuals and are passionate about accomplishment and success.
For this reason, the early generations of
Muslims warned against procrastination. It was said to Caliph Umar ibn Abdul
Aziz, after he became exhausted from too much work: “Postpone this task.” He
responded, “The work of one day has exhausted me, so how would I manage if the
work of two days accumulated?”
British author Tim Kellner says: “Many
people quickly get bored with sticking to tasks, but they forget that the
difference between the successful and the unsuccessful lies in enduring that
boredom and insisting on completing the work perfectly.”
Third: Planning and setting priorities are the cornerstone
of a disciplined character. It is a factor that gives the disciplined person a
unique skill that sets them apart. As the saying goes: “People do not plan to
fail, but they fail to plan.”
It is nearly impossible to meet a
disciplined person at work who lacks priorities or is unaware of their
responsibilities. Such individuals reject failure, detest being accused of
negligence, and may seem somewhat perfectionist, but they are capable of consistently
completing tasks with excellence. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The
acts most pleasing to God are those which are done most continuously, even if
they amount to little.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari)
Fourth: Bearing responsibility is a trait that distinguishes
disciplined individuals. It is a characteristic that can be cultivated from a
young age by assigning children responsibilities appropriate to their age and
mental abilities, along with providing regular support and guidance—whether in
completing schoolwork, doing household chores, or gaining independence in
decision-making.
A responsible person is someone who labors,
strives, and embraces hardship for the sake of reaching noble goals. They are
also confident in themselves and their ability to bear responsibility, while
the undisciplined person is inclined to chaos and carries the banner of
indifference.
So… are you a disciplined person or not?
