10 Dangers of Sympathizing with Oppressors in Islam

When a Mujahid stands defending his faith and his land occupied by the enemy, while he bleeds, his children starves to death or die of the enemies’ bullets, you find a group of people extending their hands to the enemy with support and assistance! What kind of heart equates the oppressor and the oppressed? And what conscience comforts the killer while forgetting the cries of the murdered?!

Sympathizing with oppressors, occupiers, and aggressors is not merely a fleeting emotional stance. Rather, it is a dangerous deviation from the balance of justice, a distortion of the values of mercy brought by Islam, and an explicit betrayal of the blood of the innocent and the rights of the weak.

Dangers of Sympathizing with Aggressors

1.    Sharing in the Sin of Supporting Oppressors

Allah Says, {He has already revealed to you in the Book that when you hear Allah’s revelations being denied or ridiculed, then do not sit in that company unless they engage in a different topic, or else you will be like them. Surely Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in Hell.} [An-Nisa 4:140]

Whoever sits with oppressors, sympathizes with them, or assists them is a partner in their sin, indeed, he is like them.

2.   Threatened with the Fire

Allah Warns those who incline toward oppressors: {And do not be inclined to the wrongdoers or you will be touched by the Fire. For then you would have no protectors other than Allah, nor would you be helped.} [Hud 11:113]

3.   Disobeying the Divine Prohibition Against Cooperation in Sin

Allah Commands believers: {Cooperate with one another in goodness and righteousness, and do not cooperate in sin and transgression.} [Al-Ma’idah 5:2] Sympathizing with aggressors is one of the greatest forms of cooperation in sin and transgression, as it means abandoning support for truth while justifying and even aiding falsehood.

4.   Losing the Attribute of True Faith

The true believer does not forsake his brother to the enemy. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “A Muslim is a Muslim’s brother. He does not wrong, desert or despise him.” (Sahih Muslim)

5.   Enabling the Continuation of Tyranny

When the oppressor finds sympathy and justification for his crimes, he continues in his oppression and becomes more arrogant, believing himself to be right. Allah Says, {Are those whose evil-doing is made so appealing to them that they deem it good ˹like those who are rightly guided˺? ˹It is˺ certainly Allah ˹Who˺ leaves to stray whoever He wills, and guides whoever He wills.} [Fatir 35:8]

6.   Fueling Conflicts

When the oppressed see others justifying the oppressor, they may turn their confrontation toward the sympathizers, shifting the struggle from the aggressor to those among their own people. This leads to internal strife and fighting among Muslims, precisely what the enemy desires.

 7.   Abandoning the Struggle for Justice

Some Muslims, seeing others side with oppressors, may feel fear or hopelessness and abandon resistance, and waiver their rights. This surrender opens the door to greater injustice and tyranny.

8.  Spreading Corruption in Society

When people sympathize with oppressors, the natural push and pull between truth and falsehood weakens, leading to the increase of corruption in land. Allah Says, {Had Allah not repelled a group of people by ˹the might of˺ another, corruption would have dominated the earth.} [Al-Baqarah 2:251] And He Says, {Had Allah not repelled ˹the aggression of˺ some people by means of others, destruction would have surely claimed monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which Allahs Name is often mentioned.} [Al-Hajj 22:40]

9.   Increasing the Suffering of the Oppressed

Neglecting to support the oppressed only deepens their despair and sense of betrayal. Showing mercy to the oppressor means prolonging the suffering of the oppressed and allowing their rights to be lost, which Allah has Warned against.

10.        Exposure to Divine Punishment

The Quran warns that trials do not strike oppressors alone but also those who enable them: {Beware of a trial that will not only affect the wrongdoers among you.} [Al-Anfal 8:25] If sympathy with oppressors spreads, the calamity will encompass all society.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also explained that if people abandon the oppressor and do not restrain him, Allah sends down His punishment upon them all. Qays Ibn Abi Hazim narrated that Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “O people, you recite this verse: {O believers! You are accountable only for yourselves. It will not harm you if someone chooses to deviate—as long as you are ˹rightly˺ guided.} [Al-Ma’idah 5:105] We heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: “If the people see evil and do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.”
