Oman’s government has reportedly signed a deal for the first stage of a high speed fibre optic network that will increase network speed by 1000 times.

The network is only intended for Omani government offices, with theOman Tribune newspaper reporting it will connect 63 government entities across the sultanate, as well as the Information Technology Authority’s (ITA) National Data Center and a backup centre.

It will be implemented by the ITA and the Oman Broadband Company (OBC).

“We are pleased to sign this agreement with OBC because it will integrate all the main government ministries and entities with their regional offices across the government sector, particularly the ones connected to Oman Government Network,” ITA CEO Dr Salim Bin Sultan Al Ruzaiqi was quoted as saying.

“It is also an essential milestone in the implementation of e-Transformation plan adopted by ITA, as it will help transfer data and procedures in high speed.”

The companies said the new network would increase data transfer by one gigabit per second.

It would take 12 months to upgrade the network.
