This astonishing picture was taken by a NASA astronaut from the International Space Station and shows the London in all its sprawling beauty at night.
The picture was taken by astronaut Kjell Lindgren, 42, who was born in Taipei in Taiwan before moving to the United States and then growing up in Britain. He returned to the US and joined the United States Air Force before joining NASA in 2007.
He has something of a reputation for snapping beautiful pictures from space and often shares them with his 55,000 followers on Twitter.
The picture clearly shows the Thames winding its way through the centre of the city, with the brightest lights concentrated around the Square Mile.
Earlier this month Mr Lindgren became the first ever astronaut to play the bagpipes in space when he performed a pitch-perfect rendition of Amazing Grace while on the International Space Station.
The flight engineer posted a link of himself to a 58-second clip of him playing the tune on Twitter.
The footage shows the astronaut, who is a member of the six-strong Expedition 44/45 crew, standing proud while clutching the instrument.
