BEIRUT: More than 60 inmates broke out of Baabda prison Saturday at dawn, local media reports said.
Security forces have cordoned off the area surrounding Baabda’s Justice Palace and are searching for the 69 escapees.
The security forces have been able to arrest about 10 of them, while 5 others died in a traffic accident on the Hadath highway, reports said. The car had crashed into a tree near the Constitutional Council in the Hadath area.
The prisoners escaped at dawn from the prison after reportedly breaking down the doors of their cells. Reports said that the inmates outnumbered security officials and were able to lock some guards in a cell before fleeing./ The Daily Star
