The Ministry of Interior stated on its twitter that automatic cancellation of residence for Domestic workers (Article 20) if outside Kuwait for 6 months and more residence will automatically expire. The calculation of six months begins from 1st Dec 2021.

Due to the pandemic crisis 6 months automatic cancellation was stopped due to travel restrictions imposed between various countries. The administration stated that Kuwaiti citizens who wish have domestic workers outside Kuwait  for a period of more than 6 months can apply to the administration for the request of the concerned person for permission of his/her domestic worker to continue to be outside Kuwait before the 6 months period expires.

Kuwaiti authorities have denied reports of banning the renewal driving licences of expatriates, dismissing such reports as “incorrect”.

In recent days, Kuwaiti media carried reports that traffic authorities had temporarily halted renewal of driving licences for all expatriates in the country pending a new system to revoke licences of the ineligible ones.

However, the Interior Ministry said there is no decision or circular issued to stop or withdrawing expatriates’ driving licences. “All what was circulated is incorrect,” the ministry added.

It explained that traffic authorities in coordination with the Department of Information Systems had carried out a “routine procedure” to update data of the issued driving licences replacing the old documents with smart ones.

“Anyone among foreign residents found to have obtained the driving licence illegally will have it withdrawn and be liable to legal action,” the ministry’s Security Media Department said.

Earlier this week, Al Rai newspaper reported that traffic authorities had temporarily suspended renewal of driving licences for all expatriates in the country pending a new system to revoke licences of the ineligible ones.

The suspension was seen as spelling trouble for foreign holders of expired licences and Kuwaiti citizens who employ foreign drivers and workers holding expired licences. The paper later reported, citing a lawmaker, that Interior Minister Thamer Al Aly ordered a freeze on the ban.

The renewal process will be available to licence holders who will show up having all the required documents complying with eligibility stipulations in terms of job, salary and holding a university degree, the paper added.

As many as 250,000 expatriates were expected to have their driving licences revoked in Kuwait, Al Rai had earlier estimated./GN

The United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) on Saturday called on the Sudanese security forces to respect the right to peaceful rallies, on the eve of planned rallies to mark the 3rd anniversary of Sudan's revolution that swept long-serving President Omar al-Bashir from power.

Volker Perthes, the head of UNITAMS, congratulated the Sudanese people on their revolution anniversary and hailed "their sacrifices to realize their aspiration for democracy and peace."

"I urge the security forces to respect the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly," Perthes said.

On December 19, 2018, protests erupted across Sudan against the deterioration of the country’s economic conditions, forcing the military to remove Bashir from power in April 2019.

Several political groups called for rallies on Sunday to commemorate the revolution anniversary and to show rejection of a recent political deal between Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and the military.

On Oct. 25, the military dismissed Hamdok’s transitional government and declared a state of emergency, amid accusations and differences between politicians and the military.

Hamdok, however, was reinstated on Nov. 21 under an agreement with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the Sudanese army chief, in a move that aimed to resolve a political crisis that threatened to undermine Sudan’s transition to democracy.

Before the military takeover, Sudan was administered by a sovereign council of military and civilian officials which was overseeing the transition period until elections in 2023 as part of a precarious power-sharing pact between the military and Forces of Freedom and Change coalition./aa

Turkey has administered more than 123.63 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines since it launched an immunization drive in January, according to official figures released on Saturday.

Over 56.64 million people have received a first vaccine shot, while more than 51.14 million have been fully vaccinated, Health Ministry data showed.

Turkey has also given third booster shots to more than 13.9 million people.

The ministry confirmed 17,644 new coronavirus infections, 191 deaths, and 25,568 recoveries over the past day.

As many as 342,183 virus tests were done in the past 24 hours.

Since December 2019, the pandemic has claimed over 5.34 million lives in at least 192 countries and regions, with more than 273.85 million cases reported worldwide, according to the US’ Johns Hopkins University./aa

Turkey wants to take a strong place in space, said the head of the Turkish Space Agency (TUA) on Saturday.

Speaking at a conference, titled Future in Space, Space in Future, held at Azerbaijan Technical University in the capital Baku, Serdar Huseyin Yildirim said: “Investment in space studies is not a luxury, but a need.”

The conference was organized by the Azerbaijani office of Turkey’s Independent Industrialists and Businessmen Association (MUSIAD) in collaboration with Azerbaijani universities.

Yildirim said that Turkey is a bit late in space-related issues, but added that the country is currently moving fast and capable of solving the problems on the way.

“Our aim is to take a strong place in space,” said Yildirim, adding that this is for the interests of both Turkey and its fraternal countries.

“If you are not powerful in space, you can’t be powerful in the world,” he stressed.

Informing the conference that the preliminary design of the national space vehicle that will go to the moon has been completed, Yildirim said Turkey intends to send this two-ton vehicle to lunar orbit no later than 2024 in agreement with one of the international launch companies.

“Together with our own flag, we will take the flags of friendly and fraternal countries, primarily Azerbaijan, into space,” he said.

He also participated in a conference, titled The Space Age and the Turkish World, organized by the Caucasus Center for International Relations and Strategic Studies (QAFSAM), at the Caspian University.

Speaking about the strategic importance of operating in space, Yildirim said: "The great powers once colonized some territories on the Earth. The same thing can happen in space.”

“Let's all work together in space. Let's not compete. When a union is formed, it will also serve world peace,” he proposed./aa

Indonesian authorities have raised the alert level to the second-highest on Java Island over fears that Semeru volcano may erupt again, the country’s Geological Agency said on Saturday.

The agency said that some activity has been detected in the active volcano which may trigger lava and flammable gases.

However, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif stated that 8 million cubic meters of sand coming out of the crater of the volcano blocked the Besuk Kobokan River on the lava path, and warned that if there is a new eruption, lava will spread further into the area.

A total of 48 people were killed after an explosion at the Semeru volcano on Dec. 4.

About 10,000 residents of the region were evacuated following the eruption.

The volcano spewed thick columns of ash thousands of meters into the sky and searing lava flowed down its slopes after heavy rains sparked the sudden eruption.

Several villages were blanketed with falling ash and houses were damaged by volcanic debris.

Mt. Semeru, which stands 3,676 meters (over 12,000 feet) above sea level, previously erupted in December 2020 and January this year.

Indonesia, an archipelago home to nearly 275 million people, sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area with several fault lines that make it prone to frequent volcanic activities and earthquakes./aa

As the Turkish Red Crescent continues to provide daily bread and food aid to thousands of war-torn families in Syria's Idlib province, the aid group also meets the clothing needs of 1.5 million people.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency on the occasion of International Migrants Day, Kadir Kemaloglu, head of the Turkish Red Crescent's Idlib team, said: "As the Red Crescent, we meet the daily bread needs of 33,000 families in Idlib. We provide food and hygiene assistance to an average of 17,000 families per month. At the same time, we provide health services in our three camps and briquette houses."

Kemaloglu noted that the aid agency also meets the medicine needs of hospitals and health units in Idlib.

"We meet the water needs of approximately 17 orphanages and 11 camps," he added.

Syria has been ravaged by a civil war since early 2011 when the Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protesters.

Idlib falls within a de-escalation zone forged under an agreement between Turkey and Russia. The area has been the subject of multiple cease-fire understandings, which have frequently been violated by the Syrian regime and its allies.

Over 350,000 people have been killed in 10 years of war in Syria, according to the UN, which it says is "certainly an under-count."

According to the UN Refugee Agency, some 6.6 million Syrians have been forced to leave the country over the past decade.

Turkey alone hosts approximately 3.7 million of these people – more than any other country in the world./aa

Tens of thousands of female Bangladeshi migrants across the world, especially in the Middle East, are facing deprivation, despite their activeness in boosting their host countries' economy.

According to the records of the South Asian nation's Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET), nearly 12 million nationals, including 800,000 women, are working in different countries as migrant labor or overseas employees.

Bangladesh has achieved a record of more than $48 billion in foreign exchange reserves, while the delta nation received $21.76 billion in remittances in 2020, according to government records.

Most migrants are now working in Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Kuwait, and Qatar.

For years, female Bangladeshi migrants have been suffering from discrimination, as well as physical and mental ill-treatment.

"I migrated to Lebanon eight years back, leaving behind my husband and two kids in my home country with a dream to make my family financially solvent. But, I came back home in January this year with empty hands," Hiron Nesa, 45, told Anadolu Agency via telephone from the central district of Manikganj.

She said that because of the coronavirus pandemic, her employer did not pay her wages through the last two years before sending her back to Bangladesh.

"It's a great mental agony for me that I couldn't even carry a smartphone for my son despite my promise to him," said Nesa, who added that during eight years of employment in Lebanon, she lived as a captive.

She also had to pay for the agent that arranged her job as a domestic worker in exchange for Bangladeshi Taka 100,000 ($1,200). "My agent never looked after me after my arrival in Lebanon and I had no way to contact our mission to get my due wages before returning," she said.

Nesa said she had to work hard overtime without extra pay. "I tolerated all the plights with the hope that at least before my final departure I could earn a good amount of money, but I got nothing."

Socio-economic vulnerability

Despite this harsh reality faced by female migrants in the South Asian Muslim majority country of 170 million, their socio-economic vulnerability at home has prompted them to move abroad with a dream of solving their financial woes, according to analysts.

Shariful Islam Hasan, the head of the migration program at one of Bangladesh's largest development agencies BRAC, said that economic problems have left many women in rural areas vulnerable, while many others have been divorced, suffering violence over dowry, or face discrimination.

"These socio-economically vulnerable females are the main target of the greedy agents who frequently visit the remote areas of the country to trick them by offering lucrative jobs abroad," said Hasan.

Underlining that female migrants are assets for the nation's economy, he said they helped both their home country, as well as the nations they went for work.

"So both countries have a common responsibility to ensure the legitimate rights and due wages of the female migrants," he said, adding that every country must adopt a very strong policy for migrant workers.

He pointed out that in exporting its human resources, especially women, the government should formulate a robust monitoring system in affiliation with foreign missions and concerned authorities of overseas nations.

"The government must have a data bank on all its migrant workers abroad with details including telephone numbers of them and their foreign employers," he said. "Especially, every Bangladeshi foreign mission should preserve details of female migrants and continuously monitor them."

Kajuri Begum, 50, who has been working in Medina, Saudi Arabia for seven years, told Anadolu Agency that she has had no contact number for the Bangladeshi mission.

"I saw many Bangladeshi women who were sent back to the home country fully empty (handed) after all sorts of physical torture. Even gold jewelry were snatched away from them," she said. "What is the duty of our missions if not to hold information about us?"

She added: "My earnest request to the government, please make the employees in the missions more active."

Assurance of boosting services

BMET Director-General Md. Shahidul Alam said the government has already issued specific directions to its diplomatic missions to improve their vigilance of migrant workers, with an emphasis on the safety, security, and other necessities of women.

"We have already launched non-stop services to many countries so that migrant workers can easily get all sorts of necessary support from the government without going to any third-party agents," said Alam.

On the plight of women in some countries, he said many go abroad, motivated by different factors without proper training.

"We are planning to develop a system so that all female migrants get pre-training at least two months before their departure so that they can decide well and cope with the foreign environment easily," he said.

On the Pre-Departure Orientation training, he said: "We have made online admission for training very easy for our migrant workers."

"We're now trying to train up our human resources as skilled labor so we can earn more remittances with less people," he said./agencies

Urging strong cooperation between Africa and Turkey against terrorism, the president of the African Union said on Saturday that maintaining peace and security on the continent is imperative for achieving sustainable development.

Addressing the third Turkey-Africa Partnership Summit in the Turkish metropolis Istanbul on Saturday, Felix Tshisekedi, who is also the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, affirmed Africa's trust in Turkey's expertise in various sectors, saying: "Africa needs concrete projects in the areas of trade, infrastructure, agricultural development, governance, and health."

"In some parts of Africa, unfortunately, there is instability and insecurity due to terrorist activities. Therefore, it is a must to ensure peace and security in order to move forward," he said, stressing the need for cooperation against terrorism.

Meanwhile, African Union Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat said: "Our partnership with Turkey concerns not only Africa but the whole world. Our partnership will bring solutions to major global problems."

Noting the investments of many Turkish firms in different African countries, Mahamat said that bringing that partnership to a strategic level would be a solution for major global issues.

He said according to the second partnership summit declaration in Equatorial Guinea in 2014, the period of 2015-2020 period saw developments in the fields of education, health, infrastructure, tourism, transportation, energy, and climate.

The third Turkey-Africa Partnership Summit is a follow-up of events held in 2008 in Istanbul and 2014 in Equatorial Guinea's capital Malabo under the same banner./aa

The Iraqi government on Saturday agreed to have its nationals stranded along the Lithuanian border moved to residential complexes in the capital, Vilnius.

In a statement, the Ministry of Immigration said the agreement was reached following a visit by an Iraqi government delegation to Lithuania to assess the humanitarian conditions of Iraqis stranded along the Lithuania-Belarus border.

The statement said the deal will see Iraqis in border camps transferred to residential complexes in Vilnius.

The ministry said the Lithuanian government has increased financial grants paid to those wishing to return voluntarily to their country from 300 euros to 1,000 euros.

Last Sunday, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said 3,556 Iraqis who were stranded on the border between Lithuania and Belarus have been brought back home.

Their evacuation came as the humanitarian crisis worsened for thousands of irregular migrants at the borders of Belarus and the European Union.

Due to unfavorable living conditions in Iraq, a large number of people have been waiting in difficult conditions at the Belarusian border to travel to Europe for a better life.

Since August, EU countries bordering Belarus -- Lithuania, Latvia and Poland -- have reported a dramatically growing number irregular migrants from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria crossing their borders.

Reports say that since the start of the year, the Lithuanian border guards have caught more than 4,000 migrants, mostly from Iraq, compared to only 81 in 2020.

The EU accuses Belarus of reaching out to potential travelers through seemingly official channels, including diplomatic missions and travel agencies, and invites them to Belarus by offering them visas. They are then allegedly guided to the EU border./aa
