China on Wednesday sent its largest land monitoring satellite into space.

The L-SAR 01A satellite was launched aboard a Long March-4C carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China, public broadcaster CGTN reported.

Synthetic aperture radar, or SAR, “is a type of microwave remote-sensing technology used to study geological environment and monitor landslides and earthquakes,” the report said.

The L-SAR 01A is China’s “largest land observation satellite operating in orbit by caliber, a key measurement to gauge capability,” it added.

The satellite weighs 3.2 tons and has an antenna spanning over 33 square meters (355 square feet).

The satellite will help Beijing “conduct mass terrain survey at millimeter precision” and also enable scientists to “better survey areas covered by forest,” the report said.

The Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology said the satellite “can significantly reduce China’s dependence on SAR data provided by other countries.”

This was also the first launch of China’s indigenously built Long March carrier rockets this year. The country has so far used 407 Long March carrier rockets for space launches./agencies

Human rights violations, intimidation, and cheating are plaguing campaign season in the Philippines ahead of May elections, a rights group alleged on Wednesday.

The International Coalition for Human Rights (ICHRP) also accused President Rodrigo Duterte’s government of engaging in “state murders in the presidential election campaign period.”

Citing the Jan. 15 murder of Rosemarie Galias, 68, and Silvestre Fortades Jr., 70, in the city of Barcelona, in the Sorsogon region, the group said they were members of Anakpawis, a progressive party representing the interests of peasants and workers in the nation’s Congress.

“The murder of the elderly political activist couple is the beginning of state murders in the presidential election campaign period, and must be vigorously condemned,” the group said.

Presidential and vice presidential elections are set for May 9.

“The students, peasants, workers, and human rights organizations in Sorsogon and the whole Bicol Region have suffered terrible repression during the Duterte period,” the rights group said.

The archipelago nation has witnessed a slew of killings in the past few months as election fever picks up.

Up to last August, according to the group’s data, “There were 60 political killings in Bicol out of a total of 421 nationwide.”

“There are also 43 political prisoners from the region, 10 of whom are women, and 29 have been arrested during the Duterte presidency,” it added.

“The ICHRP is gravely concerned that the repression under Duterte which we have investigated thoroughly last year will only intensify in this election campaign period,” said the statement.

The group said it is on "high alert to expose violations of human rights, intimidation and cheating in the campaign now unfolding."

Duterte himself is not seeking reelection, as a second term in office is not allowed under the Constitution./aa

People from higher social groups are more likely to hold prejudiced views against Muslims, with 4.8 percent more likely to view Islam as “totally” literalistic than people from lower social grades.

A recent study has found that middle-class and upper class occupational groups in the UK are more likely to hold prejudiced views of Islam than people from working class occupational groups.

The analysis, published on Monday by the University of Birmingham and data analysis firm YouGov, discovered that the British public are more likely to hold discriminatory and negative views on Islam than on any other religion and a significant minority of this population hold incorrect and conspiratorial views on British Muslim communities.

People from higher social groups are 4.8 percent more likely to view Islam as “literalistic,” without interpretation, than other lower social groups.

“Prejudice towards Islam and Muslims stands out in the UK, not only because it is much more widespread than most forms of racism, but also because prejudice toward Islam is more common among those who are wealthier and well-educated,” said Stephen H. Jones, the lead author of the study.

The study revealed that the demographics of those most likely to hold such Islamophobic views and beliefs are among the elderly population, working-class, males, and those who voted to leave the EU as well as supporters of the Conservative Party under UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

According to the report, the non-Muslim British public is three times more likely to hold prejudiced views of Islam than they are of other faiths.

Support for the prohibition of Muslim migration to the UK is 4-6 percent higher than it is for other religious and ethnic minority groups and British people are more confident in making incorrect judgments about Islam than other non-Christian faiths.

Muslims second ‘least liked’ group

Muslims are the UK’s second ‘least liked’ group, after Gypsy and Irish travellers, according to the report.

Just over a quarter of the British public harbor negative views towards Muslims with 9.9 percent feeling “very negative” towards them. In comparison, only 8.5 percent of the public hold negative views for Jewish people, 6.4 percent for Black people, and 8.4 percent for other white people of different nationalities.

The report further finds that over one in four people hold conspiratorial views on the so-called "Sharia no-go areas."

'Threatening British way of life'

Some 26.5 percent agree that there are certain areas of the UK that operate under Sharia law and that non-Muslims are prohibited from entering. 36.3 percent agree that Islam threatens the British way of life. The vast majority of them are Tory and Brexit supporters.

As well as reporting on the scale of Islamophobia in the UK, the report also offered various recommendations to combat and offer solutions to anti-Muslim discrimination, including the public acknowledgment of Islamophobia by the government and equally higher public institutions.

“Government and other public figures should publicly acknowledge and address the lack of public criticism that Islamophobic discourses and practices trigger, and how Islamophobia stands out compared with other forms of racism and prejudice.”

The publication of the report comes shortly after accusations were levelled against the Tory party after Muslim minister Nusrat Ghani was sacked due to her “Muslimness” making other ministers uncomfortable./TRT

As the first day of the new year dawned in New Delhi, I woke to find that I had been put up for auction on the Internet. There it was: a photograph of me with the words “Your Bulli Bai deal of the day.”

Bulli is a derogatory term reserved for Muslim women and bai, meaning maid, is another derogatory term often used by India’s right wing for Muslim women.

I jumped out of bed. Having written stories critical of the government for the last two years—dealing with attacks on members of the Dalit caste, crimes against women, COVID-19 mismanagement, and hate crimes against Muslims—I was no stranger to trolling. In fact, I am one of the 20 most abused women journalists in India. But being auctioned?

There were nearly 100 more women on the list—prominent ones, such as broadcasters, politicians, authors, pilots, and actors. Like me, all were Muslim. For some, it was their second appearance in six months in one of these bogus sales, designed to mock and humiliate. Many of the women had been critical of the ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

To the creators of this “auction,” none of us were women who had made something of our lives. In my family, I’m not only the first journalist (thanks to my mother, who struggled to bring me to the city for my education). I’m also the first woman to venture out alone in public, to come and go by myself, depending on the needs of my work. But to our would-be auctioneers, we were just Muslim women who needed to be shamed and silenced.

I was filled with rage and I wanted to do something about it.

Muslims under attack in India

There has been a marked increase in the persecution of Muslims since the BJP, pursuing a Hindu nationalist agenda, came into power in 2014. Across India, Muslims are being refused housing and Muslim artists have quit their jobs because of threats from hardline Hindu groups.

In December, a three-day religious conclave was held in the state of Uttarakhand, where several Hindu supremacist leaders openly called for a genocide of minorities. Yati Narsinghanand, the event’s organizer, urged Hindus to “take up weapons” for a “war against Muslims.”

Around the same time, a gathering was held by an organization known as the Hindu Yuva Vahini, founded by Yogi Adityanath, a politician-monk who openly preaches hate against Muslims. Hundreds took an oath at this event to make India a Hindu nation. They chanted: “We will fight and die if required, we will kill as well.”

In January last year, police under Yogi Adityanath, who is the chief minister of India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, and a member of the BJP, filed a First Information Report (FIR) against me for my coverage of the farmers’ protests. (An FIR is a document issued by Indian law enforcement in acknowledgement of a criminal complaint.) They claimed I had spread fear and alarm in the state and was a threat to India’s “national integration.” I was only 22 and not even six months into my first job.

Fortunately, a court granted me protection from arrest in the case, but I am not the only journalist being harassed. Trumped-up criminal cases have been filed against journalists for news reports not favorable towards the ruling party. Editors and writers at the media organization I work for, The Wire, have faced charges ranging from defamation to “promoting enmity,” having “intent to cause riot” and posting “provocative tweets.”

Now, as the new year began, I was under attack again. But the tweet I posted on New Year’s Day about the auction had gone viral and a few lawmakers were starting to speak up about it. India’s minister of information technology tweeted that the Internet hosting provider, GitHub, had canceled an account belonging to one of the alleged auctioneers. This helped me overcome my wariness about approaching the police, who had done nothing the last time this happened. To my surprise, I was able to lodge an FIR.

Then the mainstream media started taking an interest. Every major television channel in the country was covering the story and wanting to talk to me. I hardly had time to rest or eat properly, torn between exhaustion and sustaining the momentum the case had developed. Suddenly, I was the story—on the other side of the camera, or with somebody else writing notes while I talked. For the first time, I realized the importance of adding a few words of solace before barging into people’s traumas as a journalist—the impact of a simple, “sorry for what happened.”

Exactly a week after the incident, at the insistence of my editor at The Wire, I went to see a psychiatrist, who prescribed me medication for sleep and anxiety. After the appointment, I returned home, my body drained. The lymph node tuberculosis that I had found out about a few months earlier didn’t help. And then, just when things couldn’t get worse, I tested positive for COVID-19. I’m writing this from my bed.

Accountability for crimes against India’s Muslims

A day after my report to the police was registered, I received a message on Twitter from a young girl whose name had appeared on the auction list. She had been frozen with trauma after seeing it, she wrote, but knowing that others were talking about it openly was now giving her strength.

The police started making arrests. After each one, I got calls from many of my fellow victims. “They’ve arrested someone, Ismat,” and “We did it.” But I was shocked and saddened to learn the ages of the suspects. None of them is over 28. One of them is an 18-year-old female orphan. She and the others are accused of publicly humiliating women from another religion—women they had never met—and here I am writing about them, a member of the same generation. What better expresses the rot in Indian society today?

Even more distressingly, the politicians who fan the flames of hatred in our society continue to walk free.

After all, there is no FIR against prominent BJP member Kapil Mishra, who, in February 2020, gave Delhi police an ultimatum to clear the streets of protesters before he took matters into his own hands. The protesters were denouncing the Citizenship Amendment Act, legislation that made it easier to block Muslim migrants from citizenship, when riots broke out. It was the worst religious violence in India for years, with mostly Hindu mobs attacking Muslims. Fifty-three deaths were reported, the majority of them Muslims.

In an interview with me in 2021, Mishra denied that his exhortation “Shoot the traitors” was the cause of violence. He remains at liberty but many protesters languish in jail, accused of conspiring to incite a riot.

One of them is Khalid Saifi, an activist who tried to mediate between the Hindu and Muslim communities before the riots broke out. A few days after the Bulli Bai affair, Saifi’s wife, Nargis, forwarded a message from him to me about my treatment.

“My sister,” it read, “I feel so helpless inside the jail that I can’t do anything to protect you. Had I been outside, I would have been out on the street protesting to the best of my capabilities.”

I was stunned. Here was a guy who has been in prison for two years, in the middle of a pandemic. But he was feeling helpless because he couldn’t protest in support of me. It was late, around midnight—and still, I had to call his wife.

Nargis answered immediately. No words came out of my mouth. In fact, neither of us said anything. We just felt a shared sense of sorrow over the state of our country. Then I began sobbing uncontrollably. In response, she cried too, and loudly. Perhaps she had held back her tears for a lot longer than me./ time

The United States Coast Guard is currently on a frantic search looking for survivors, after a boat capsized off the east coast of Florida.

Thirty-nine people are believed missing.

Coast Guard officials said a good Samaritan rescued one of the survivors on Tuesday morning about 45-miles east of Fort Pierce Inlet, which is 135 miles (217 kilometers) north of Miami. The survivor was clinging onto the overturned vessel when he was found.

“The survivor reported he left Bimini, Bahamas, with 39 other people Saturday night and encountered severe weather, causing the vessel to capsize. According to the survivor, no one was wearing a life jacket,” the Coast Guard released in a statement.

Bimini is 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Miami in the Atlantic Ocean.

Rescue teams are canvassing the massive area by both air and water, searching for survivors, who have now been missing at sea for three days.

The Coast Guard believes this is a suspected human smuggling operation./aa

Russian financial watchdog Rosfinmonitoring on Tuesday placed opposition figure Alexey Navalny and two of his supporters, Lyubov Sobol and Georgy Alburov, on the list of terrorists and extremists.

People recognized as "terrorists and extremists" are forbidden to contact the media, post information on the internet, act as organizers of public events, and take part in elections.

Being on the blacklist means serious limitations on the use of financial services, including a ban on receiving money from abroad.

However, it does not impose any restrictions on freedom of movement.

Commenting on the announcement, Sobol said there is "no evidence" that she or her colleagues are involved in extremist or terrorist activities.

"It is obvious to anyone that we have nothing in common with the people who should be on this list," she said.

In February 2021, Navalny was sentenced to two years and eight months in jail for numerous violations of parole during his probation period.

Navalny protested the imprisonment, insisting the verdict was "biased" and that "the real reason" for the sentence was his political activities./aa

Prominent Jewish-American groups urged “Israel” on Tuesday to rein in "ongoing terrorism and political violence" committed by “Israeli” settlers in the occupied West Bank.

In a letter led by the “Israel” Policy Forum, and co-signed by the Anti-Defamation League and five other organizations, the groups appealed to “Israeli” Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and his government to take immediate action to address what they said is a "disturbing trend" in settler violence.

"While the latest example of extremists filmed torching a car and violently attacking Palestinians and “Israeli” activists with clubs outside the village of Burin is particularly egregious, it is sadly not an isolated incident," they wrote. "Attacks by Israelis have been steadily increasing and intensifying over the past year, and as [pro-Israel] Jewish organizations, we are deeply concerned by these trends."

The groups referenced a settler attack on Friday against activists near the village of Burin in the West Bank where 10 activists were injured, including four “Israelis”.

The letter appealed to Bennet's government "to unite in strong condemnation against these acts," and to work to bring the accountable parties to account while confronting the "growing threats posed by these extremists with the determination and seriousness that this grave situation requires."

In recent months, settlers across the West Bank have stepped up attacks against Palestinians and their properties, often with Israeli security forces posted nearby.

“Israeli” and Palestinian estimates indicate there are about 650,000 settlers living in 164 settlements and 116 outposts in the West Bank, including in occupied Jerusalem.

Under international law, all “Israeli” settlements in occupied territories are considered illegal./agencies

Locals in a city located north of the front line near Donetsk, the scene of clashes between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian military, are hoping for peace.

Daily life continues as usual in Avdiyivka, one of the hottest spots near the conflicts that started in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region in 2014.

To reach the city, which is 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from the separatist-held city of Donetsk, one must pass through several checkpoints.

The city's most important source of income, which bears traces of the conflict, is the nearby coking coal factory, which is currently operating.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Natalia, a local of the city who spoke without giving her full name, said she is worried and upset about the current conflict.

"I hope our people will come to an agreement in the near future. I don't know if there will be war, but I don't want one ... I want peace for all," she said.

Oleksiy, another local, said he believes some provocations and war activities in the area are possible.

Saying he has no plan for an emergency yet, Oleksiy said people in the area "will act according to the situation, go to the shelters and stay for a few days, maybe they’ll leave the city."

Yevgenya, another local, said the tension has always been there.

Underlining that he has no plans for now if the situation changes, Yevgenya said, "I don’t intend to leave, but it’s a difficult situation to predict. We have to not panic but be prepared for every scenario."

Kyiv and Moscow have been locked in a conflict since the war in eastern Ukraine broke out in 2014 after Russia illegally annexed the Crimean peninsula.

Russia also recently amassed tens of thousands of troops near Ukraine’s borders, prompting fears that Kremlin could be planning another military offensive against its ex-Soviet neighbor.

Moscow has denied it is preparing to invade and said its troops are there for exercises. Instead it has issued a list of security demands, including Ukraine not joining NATO, to calm the existing tensions./aa

European coal companies' business plans are failing to deliver on their net zero pledges due to the lack of intermediate targets, according to a new report published Tuesday by Europe Beyond Coal and Ember with the endorsement of 10 other organizations.

The report entitled Limited Utility: The European Energy Companies Failing on Net Zero Commitments, examined 21 Europe-based coal utilities, 16 of which have pledged to reach net zero emissions by 2050 as outlined in the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Net Zero Emissions by 2050 report.

According to the IEA's roadmap, all unabated coal plants in advanced economies need to be phased out by 2030 and in all economies by 2040.

Fossil gas exit is needed to reach zero-emissions electricity in advanced economies by 2035 and globally by 2040 while renewables generation needs to more than triple from 2020 levels to account for 60% of total global electricity generation by 2030. Wind and solar generation will also need to grow at least six-fold globally between 2020 and 2030.

The utilities, including Bulgarian Energy Holding BEH, Romanian majority state-owned electricity producer CE Oltenia, the Czech Republic’s CEZ group, UK-based energy company Drax, British integrated energy company EDF, German energy company EnBW, Polish power industry company ENEA, Italian power distributor Enel, French multinational utility company ENGIE, the Czech Republic’s energy company EPH, European energy company Fortum/Uniper, Spain’s power utility company Iberdrola, Naturgy; another Spanish multinational natural gas and electrical energy utilities company, Poland's largest energy sector company PGE, German multinational energy company RWE, Scotland’s SSE energy company, the Czech Republic-headquartered Sev.En energy group, German power company STEAG, Polish energy holding company Tauron, Swedish multinational power company Vattenfall and Danish multinational power company Orsted were selected, and all were approached between August and December 2021 to verify the data used in the report.

The report found that less than half plan to deliver the required 2030 European Union (EU) and OECD coal exist, and none have plans for 2035 EU and OECD unabated fossil gas exit from electricity generation.

The companies' plans will comfortably quadruple solar and wind power by 2030, however, this also falls short of the minimum six-fold growth required globally, according to the report.

"Not one European coal utility analyzed by this report is making plans to meet all science-based milestones to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees," Kathrin Gutmann, the Europe Beyond Coal campaign director, was quoted as saying.

"If Europe is to do its part for climate action and exit coal by 2030 and have a fossil-free, renewables-based power system by 2035, these companies need to show near-term plans to close coal and fossil gas plants, and massively scale up the build-out of wind and solar power generation. All the talk of mid-century targets is just fluff so long as their business plans have no way of delivering on them," she underlined.

Ember's senior energy and climate analyst, Sarah Brown, noted that there is a growing consensus among governments of advanced economies that a clean electricity supply by 2035 is crucial to realizing net zero emissions by 2050.

However, she said this is not being reflected in the business plans of European utilities.

“These urgently need to be aligned with the IEA's net zero roadmap if we want to keep global heating below 1.5 degrees and escape the energy price and supply crises caused by volatile fossil fuels," she said.

Kaarina Kolle, the report's lead author, stressed that each of the companies analyzed knows what is required to deliver on their net zero pledges.

"So the gaping hole between their so-called 'ambition' and what they actually intend to deliver is very revealing. It is time to draw a line in the sand. If companies do not align their business plans with the intermediate milestones required to deliver on their net zero pledges, financial institutions providing them with support must intervene," Kolle said./aa

The European Union foreign policy chief warned Serbia against genocide denial on Tuesday after a meeting of the EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Council (SA Council).

Josep Borrell said such denial is not compatible with European values.

"There is no place in Europe for genocide denial. There is no place for the glorification of war crimes and war criminals. Also, to relate or publicly support those who deny war genocide, celebrate war crimes, and those who undermine the territorial integrity and unity of the country not only threatens regional stability, it is also not compatible with European values," he said.

Borell was referring to the latest political conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina between Bosniaks and Serbs.

The dispute erupted after Valentin Inzko, then the high representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, amended the criminal code last July to ban the denial of genocide and the glorification of war criminals.

Bosnian Serb lawmakers said in response that they would boycott the country's institutions.

Serb member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Milorad Dodik denounced the amendments and pushed for controversial separatist moves in the Republika Srpska parliament.

The steps have been criticized internationally for violating the 1995 Dayton Accords and undermining the country's Constitution.

“We shared these principles with the prime minister of Serbia, and we are sure we will continue advancing on the European path of Serbia,” said Borrell. Serbia has been in accession negotiations with the EU since 2014.

On the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue, Borrell welcomed Serbia's statements that it is ready to resume talks. He called on Serbia and Kosovo to sit at the table in good faith for normalization.

Borell said that the rule of law, fundamental rights, and normalization with Kosovo will be decisive in Serbia's membership negotiations.

He added that Serbia's reforms in the EU membership process are more necessary for the people of Serbia than to please the EU.

Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic also said that his government will continue to work in the fields of economy, the rule of law, public administration, judicial independence, and the Green Deal and is determined to reform./aa
