Human rights groups and charities on Tuesday called on the British government to provide safer routes for refugees and migrants crossing the English Channel as the number of people making their way to the UK in 2021 trebled.

Refugee charities have said that government policy towards migrants and refugees crossing the channel is harsh and risked more deaths at sea.

November 2021 saw 27 people, including a seven-year-old boy and a pregnant woman, drown in the channel, the worst tragedy in the channel’s history.

“This government must change its approach and instead of seeking to punish or push away people seeking safety because of the type of journey they have made to the UK, they must create and commit to safe routes,” said Enver Soloman, chief executive of the Refugee Council.

According to the Refugee Council, Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants and Care4Calais, more people crossed the Channel in 2021 than in 2020.

The number of people crossing France into the UK has increased despite the UK’s exit from the EU and Home Secretary Priti Patel investing millions of pounds on implementing new measures to deter the crossings, including the use of force to turn away refugees and migrants.

“The government tells us that people should travel by legal means but if this were truly possible, why would so many be risking their lives in flimsy boats?” said Clare Moseley, founder of Care4Calais, an organization that aids refugees in the port city of Calais in northern France.

According to the Press Association, a total of 28,395 people arrived on the shores of the UK via small boats in 2021. This number significantly increased in November when a further 6,869 people entered the UK.

Although the Home Office compiles its own data and analysis regarding the number of people and crossings, it has not released any data on the latter. Instead, it has said that the new nationality and borders bill will prevent people from entering the UK illegally and thus deter people trafficking.

“Seeking asylum for protection should not involve people asylum shopping country to country, or risking their lives by lining the pockets of criminal gangs to cross the Channel,” said a Home Office statement.

“The nationality and borders bill will make it a criminal offence to knowingly arrive in the UK illegally and introduce life sentences for those who facilitate illegal entry into the country. It will also strengthen the powers of Border Force to stop and redirect vessels, while introducing new powers to remove asylum seekers to have their claims processed outside the UK,” the statement added.

The government’s approach, according to the organizations, is counterproductive and forces more people into the hands of people traffickers and smugglers, making the journey to the UK deadly.

“What’s changed is that safe routes to get here – like family reunion routes and the Syrian resettlement scheme – have completely shut down, forcing more people into the hands of people traffickers to get here,” said Minnie Rahman of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants./aa

Turkiye's mining exports reached a historic high of $5.9 billion in 2021, Fatih Donmez, the energy and natural resources minister, announced Tuesday.

Speaking at the 2021 Mining Exports Evaluation meeting, Donmez said both the energy and mining sectors have had a successful year despite the global COVID-19 pandemic.

From mining exports of $565 million in 2000, a ten-fold increase was seen over the past 20 years and a 40% year-on-year rise in 2021 with mining exports totaling $4.27 billion, Donmez said.

"The top 10 countries that we exported in 2021 were China, the US, Spain, Bulgaria, Belgium, Italy, India, Sweden, Germany, and France. Of course, it is not limited to these. We also added new countries to our portfolio such as Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Hong Kong, Albania, and Serbia," he added.

China topped the list with a 28% share of Turkiye's mining exports, followed by the US with 9.7%, Spain with 5%, and Bulgaria and Belgium each with 4%, according to Donmez.

Metallic minerals were the products that Turkiye exported the most last year, with exports standing at $2.25 billion, followed by refined natural stones at $1.28 billion and industrial minerals at $1.1 billion.

Mining sector's contribution to economy grows five-fold

The gold sector has made great strides with Turkiye's gold exports reaching $7.6 billion. With imports at $5.6 billion, the country made a $2 billion foreign trade surplus, reversing the trade deficit trend set in 2017.

He also shared the country’s achievement in revenue from boron last year, with exports exceeding $1 billion.

"While the mining sector contributed only 11 billion Turkish liras to the gross domestic product in 2009, this number reached 59.2 billion liras in 2020," he said, noting that this represented a five-fold increase over the last 10 years./aa

Some 150 passengers aboard a cruise ship in the Mediterranean tested positive for COVID-19 after arriving at Italy’s Port of Genoa on Monday from the French Port of Marseille.

The Italian news agency ANSA reported that after contracting coronavirus, the passengers, most of them Italians, have been isolated in their cabins on the MSC Grandiosa cruise ship docked in Genoa, the most famous seaport of Italy.

The Italians will be reportedly sent home on protected vehicles and foreigners will be taken to a care home in Genoa.

The ship, which was supposed to leave for Civitavecchia, a coastal town northwest of the capital Rome, on Monday afternoon, will be able to sail after complete disinfection./aa

Since November 2020, the bloody war between Ethiopian government forces and rebels from the northern Tigray region has left the nation’s economy battered, devastated its infrastructure, and left thousands dead and many displaced.

A joint report by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) accuses the Tigray Special Forces (TSF), Eritrean Defense Force (EDF), and Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) of destroying infrastructure in Ethiopia.

“The ENDF, EDF, and TSF carried out attacks on civilians resulting in the deaths of and injuries to men, women, boys, and girls. Civilian objects which enjoy special protection under international humanitarian law such as health facilities, schools, places of worship, and houses were indiscriminately attacked,” said the report.

“ENDF and TSF occupied and used civilian infrastructure, such as schools and health facilities without appropriate justification for military usage.”

The UN said there has been large-scale destruction and appropriation of property by various actors, including armed forces, militias, and civilians, as the war in Ethiopia waged on.

“The ENDF looted and destroyed property in Atsey Yohannes School in Mekelle (the Tigray capital, also spelled Mekele) on two occasions while using the school as a military camp and took three cars from the premises of the Supreme Court in Mekelle,” the report said, also accusing the EDF of looting public and private property, including objects indispensable for the survival of the civilian population in southern Tigray, including Keih Emba, Samre, Adi Gibai, Adi Awsa, Bora, and Wukro in eastern Tigray.

“Tigray forces looted and destroyed private and public property and infrastructures in Western Tigray and parts of North-Western Tigray. Amhara militia and Fano have been implicated in looting and appropriation of houses and businesses in parts of Western Tigray such as Humera and Maikadra,” said the report.

Tigray accuse government of destruction

Debretsion Gebremichael, president of the Tigray region, has accused the army of bombing the 300 megawatt Tekeze Dam, a one-of-a-kind hydroelectric project in northern Ethiopia. It is one of many claims by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which Gebremichael also leads, accusing the government of targeting infrastructure projects in Tigray.

Last November the Tigray rebels claimed to have made major inroads in their fight against government forces, saying their forces had moved to less than 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the capital. They have since withdrawn to their border in northern Tigray.

The country is witnessing a kind of cease-fire after months of heavy bombardment, heavy gunfights, and wanton killing by both sides, according to the UN.

What remains in the year-long conflict is the ugly face of war, which has left damages estimated in the billions of dollars.

The government is on record saying that its many aerial bombardments of the Tigray region have destroyed manufacturing and industrial facilities, saying in its defense that the regions had been turned into Tigray rebels’ military facilities.

Residents from Tigray who spoke to Anadolu Agency said in such attacks, civilians, including children, were among those killed in the populous regions where Tigrayans eke out a living.

Abrihet Fessehaye, a student, told Anadolu Agency: “If you walk around the city, you will see for yourself the damage that has been done by the Ethiopian army on its own people. We are Ethiopians and we don’t want war. So many places have been bombed, leaving us with no jobs. We want the war to end, we want peace, it will be costly to rebuild.”

Aside from the damage caused to markets that were bombed by the government in Tigray, Ethiopian forces have also been accused of bombing a section of the Tekeze Dam located between Amhara and the Tigray region, which generates 300 MW of power on a 105-kilometer (65-mile) transmission line joining the national grid.

Since the start of the war, government forces have been accused of targeting and destroying telecommunications infrastructure, with most areas in Tigray cut off from network connectivity as the war intensified.

The UN said that while more than 7 million people need humanitarian aid in northern Ethiopia, efforts to mobilize assistance in Tigray, where more than 5 million lack food and an estimated 400,000 now live in famine-like conditions, have been made more difficult due to the inability to move cash, fuel, and supplies into the region.

“No aid trucks have reached Mekelle since 18 October amid continued airstrikes,” Rosemary DiCarlo, undersecretary-general for political and peacebuilding affairs, told a Nov. 8 news conference.

She added that UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) flights to the Tigray capital have remained suspended since Oct. 22 while fuel shipments have been blocked since August.

Ethiopia accuses rebel group of destruction in formerly captured cities

In November, a government counter-offensive, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on the battlefield leading his army, began freeing key towns in the Amhara and Afar regional states, which had been under Tigray rebels.

The conflict began in November 2020. According to the government, the war broke out after Tigray People’s Liberation Forces (TPLF) attacked federal army bases stationed in Tigray, including the regional capital Mekele, killing soldiers and looting cosiderable property.

A joint investigation report by the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission said the conflict started after the TPLF attacked federal army bases – a claim neither denied nor confirmed by the rebels.

A June 29, 2021 unilateral cease-fire declared by Premier Ahmed was scoffed at as a “sick joke” by rebel leaders.

Ever since – in addition to the thousands killed in the war – social and economic infrastructure has been totally or partially damaged, including schools, universities, health institutions, and other facilities, according to the government, Tigray forces, and international aid agency reports.

The cost has yet to be assessed in full, but experts estimate the destruction must have cost the Horn of Africa nation billions of dollars.

Workers jobless

One victim of the war is the globally renowned Turkish construction company Yapi Merkezi. It has been engaged in building railway tracks from Awash, Hara Gebeya in the north for about 10 years.

Yapi Merkezi’s project is part of a multi-billion dollar electric railway line project that links the central, southern, and eastern parts of Ethiopia with neighboring Djibouti, a coastal country through which Ethiopia does more than 95% of its import-export activities.

“After they came here, they (TPLF fighters) turned this project site into their camp,” said Mohammed Nur, once a heavy-duty truck driver with the Turkish contractor. “We witnessed as they transported property from here and whatever they could not take away, they damaged. What we witnessed was horrible and not expected from any group that claims to be fighters.”

Standing outside the office at the camp under a blue, cloud-flecked sky, Nur heaved with sadness as he told Anadolu Agency that TPLF fighters committed hope-shattering pillage at the camp.

“This company is a very big one that is beneficial to any country. For example, I am the breadwinner for my family. I am rendered jobless now because the company I work for has been forced out. So I have now become someone with nothing, nothing at all. I am telling (you) what I have seen,” he said.

“This is a big company that employed many workers; many workers with so many dependents have been rendered jobless, displaced from here,” Nur added. “The workers have children of their own and many have dependents such as their mothers. It was an eyesore to witness them taking away company property. It is a shame to see people we consider Ethiopians do such things. Some of them were the very people who were working with us.

“One of them is someone I regarded a friend. He was a driver of a concrete mixer truck. We saw him taking away the trucks. It was such a shame. He towed two mixing trucks on a low-bed. We could have killed him if we had known he would do that but all along we saw him as one of our own. It was painful to witness all that.

“This company is one in which all ethnic groups – Amhara, Oromo, Tigre, what have you – come and work. I was rendered jobless due to this (TPLF) force.”

Health care shattered

According to the Amhara regional state government, 14 hospitals, 153 health centers, and 642 health posts were destroyed by TPLF forces when they made incursions south into neighboring regions since last July.

In addition, rebel fighters are accused of destroying nearly 10,000 schools across the Amhara and Afar regions, robbing 1.2 million students of opportunities to pursue their education, a claim that Anadolu Agency cannot verify.

“Around 10 million people were served by this hospital. After being captured by the TPLF, militias damaged or looted our hospital service equipment and medications starting with the oxygen production center. We lost oxygen production material, and the machinery was totally damaged,” Haimanot Ayali, medical director of the Dessie General Hospital, told Anadolu Agency.

She said rebels destroyed the operation room, adding: “Our entire department was totally damaged and destroyed.”

“We started at the primary level – primary healthcare service, and only simple procedures we started today. Nowadays, we can’t say it is a specialized hospital,” she said. “IDP (internally displaced persons) service, sick baby service, gynecology service, heart service, delivery service, neonatal intensive care unit service, malnutrition service, so many service specialists are also corrupted.”

The conflict has affected other areas of the country, forcing at least 2 million people from their homes and leaving millions without access to critical humanitarian assistance.

Acute food insecurity is now affecting more than 9.4 million people in northern Ethiopia, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Within Tigray, 5.2 million people, roughly 90% of the population, need humanitarian aid./aa

The European Union Delegation to the Palestinians (DPAL) expressed grave concern Monday over the health of a Palestinian prisoner who has been on a hunger strike for over four months in protest against his detention without trial by “Israel”.

DPAL said it is "seriously concerned" about Hisham Abu Hawash, whose life is reportedly in “immediate danger,” according to a report by Physicians for Human Rights and is in critical condition on the 140th day of the hunger strike.

Reminding that Hawash aimed to protest his administrative detention in an Israeli prison since October 2020 through the strike, the delegation said on Twitter that "the use of administrative detention without formal charge remains a longstanding concern.”

"Detainees have the right to be informed about charges underlying any detention, must be given a fair trial within a reasonable time or be released," they added, calling for an urgent solution from Israeli authorities.

On Jan. 1, the International Committee of the Red Cross paid a visit to monitor Hawash's condition and reported that the committee is "gravely concerned about his deteriorating health."

"Every effort must be made to find a solution to avoid irreversible health consequences and the possible tragic loss of life," they added./aa

French police chased irregular migrants from their tents and used tear gas against them during an operation Monday on the outskirts of the northern city of Calais.

According to images posted by human rights observers on Twitter, they also confiscated around 30 tents and five awnings in the makeshift camp.

Police also assaulted rights activists who were filming the incident.

Previously, images of the Calais police and other officials cutting the tents of migrants were shared online, causing outrage among human rights activists.

At least 15 police officers were injured last week in an hour-long brawl with migrants in Calais as they attempted to clear an encampment and secure an area that is often an exit point for asylum seekers fleeing through the Channel Tunnel to the UK.

While one encampment was peacefully cleared near Calais Regional Hospital earlier that morning, 60 gendarmes and officers of the CRS -- France’s special mobile French police force -- found themselves attacked by a group of 100 migrants while they stood guard in the Turquerie Zone, a locale where migrants try to gain passage to the UK by jumping into trucks making the journey.

One bystander described the hour-long brawl as one of “incredible violence” and even “a scene of war” with many of the migrants hurling bags of stones and other heavy material at the officers. Police responded with fire from defense bullets and tear gas.

Some migrants were injured in the fighting, while a number of officers suffered wounds and one officer a broken leg, according to French news outlet France Bleu./aa

Around 4,000 people were let off a cruise ship in Lisbon on Monday after a COVID-19 outbreak cut the journey short, according to local media.

The AIDAnova ship, mostly carrying German passengers, had been held up since Dec. 29 in the Lisbon port.

Between Wednesday and Friday, 52 crew members tested positive for the coronavirus.

By Monday, 68 people, including some passengers, have been infected, according to Portuguese news agency Lusa.

Everyone infected has mild to no symptoms, according to the cruise ship company. Most have been taken to hotels in Lisbon to isolate, while the rest will remain on the ship.

All the other crew and passengers have tested negative for the virus and are being taken to the airport to return home.

Passengers were set to visit the Portuguese island of Madeira for New Year’s Eve celebrations and continue their journey to Spain’s Canary Islands.

The ship took off from Hamburg on Dec. 22 and was decked out as a “winter wonderland for the holiday season,” according to a press release by the cruise ship company AIDA Cruises.

For days after the outbreak, the company was debating whether or not to continue the voyage but announced on Sunday that it would be canceled.

The cancelation also affects passengers who were set to catch a cruise taking off from the Canary Islands this week.

The AIDAnova cruise ship also made history by being the first cruise ship in the world fully powered by liquefied natural gas./aa

"Israeli" authorities have issued demolition orders for 10 Palestinian structures, including a mosque, in the occupied West Bank, according to a local official on Monday.

Salah Fanoun, the mayor of Nahalin village, west of Bethlehem, said "Israeli" authorities cited lack of building permits in Area C for the demolition orders.

“Four inhabited houses and a mosque are among the list of structures to be demolished,” he told Anadolu Agency.

Area C is under [Israel’s] administrative and security control until a final status agreement is reached with the Palestinians.

Under the 1995 Oslo Accords between “Israel” and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, was divided into three portions – Area A, B, and C.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), a total of 768 Palestinian structures in Area C and the occupied East Jerusalem have been demolished by Israel between January and November 2021./aa

After a week of record-breaking heat, firefighters in northern Spain are struggling to extinguish a wave of forest fires that emerged over the first weekend of the year.

In Asturias, the smoke and haze are tangible in the capital city of Oviedo, where the temperature is expected to hit 19C (66.2F) on Monday.

Authorities said on Monday that 50 forest fires remain active in the region. On Sunday, more than 100 forest fires were burning in Asturias and Cantabria.

Damage has been limited to the land and a few buildings, but the fires are threatening villages in the areas of Belmonte and Salas.

The conditions for the fires were made possible by a powerful winter heat dome that brought summer-like temperatures to the north of Spain over the last week.

The cities of Gijon, Bilbao, A Coruna, and Salamanca are just a few that have broken heat records in recent days as the mercury reached close to 25C (77F).

Even after the area received record-breaking rainfalls in November, this anomalous heat has dried out much of northern Spain, leading to destructive floods and landslides.

But the fires themselves are not thought to be a natural occurrence.

The sheer number of small fires leads authorities to believe that most, if not all, were intentionally provoked.

“It’s terrible that the indecency of just a few are putting Asturia’s landscape and rich natural environment at risk,” Asturias President Adrian Barbon tweeted.

Many fires were likely set by farmers who wanted to clear brush from land to make way for grazing. According to a local environmental group, it was because the law in Asturias stipulates that land that has been burnt can be used for pasture afterward.

The group said Asturias is the only region in the European Union to allow this practice and official reports have shown that 80% of forest fires are related to creating more land for grazing.

Others point to local pyromaniacs, notorious for setting fires when conditions are ripe for burning.

“Everyone in towns knows who is starting the fires. But no one says anything. That's because pyromaniacs are violent people ... and if you do say something, the next mountain to burn is the one next to your house,” tweeted local journalist Aitana Castano Diaz./aa
