More than 100 opposition members of Uganda's parliament staged a walkout Thursday over what they called cases of "torture and illegal detentions" in the country.

The members, led by opposition leader Mathias Mpuuga, walked out after a disagreement with Deputy Speaker Anita Among over a report on missing Ugandans, including those in detention without trial and those alleged to have been tortured.

They wanted it to be discussed, but the deputy speaker said it should be discussed next Tuesday.

Before the walkout, Mpuuga said: “We cannot sit in parliament while some of our colleagues are suffering in jails.”

Among those in jail are two opposition MPs who were arrested about four months ago on allegations of murder.

The deputy speaker said “I will never bow down to tantrums by opposition to suspend plenary sittings. They have disrespected the solutions I came up with on brutality by security forces.”

Ruling party lawmaker Simon Silwany criticized the opposition, saying all members of parliament are against torture and mistreatment of Ugandans but it is wrong for the opposition to walk out because the only platform that the lawmakers can discuss issues is parliament.

The Internal Affairs Ministry refuted the claims of torture and imprisonment without trial, saying it will submit a report next week./aa

Egypt sealed a 3-1 win against Cameroon on penalties Thursday to face Senegal in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

Both sides failed to break the deadlock during the match and extra time at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Cameroon’s capital Yaounde.

Ahmed Sayed, Mohamed Abdelmonem and Mohanad Lasheen converted their spot kicks against hosts Cameroon during the penalty shootout.

Egypt booked their place in the AFCON final for the 10th time with their second final in the last three editions.

Senegal and Egypt will face off to win the trophy at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo on Sunday.

Burkina Faso and Cameroon are set for the third-place playoff at the same stadium on Saturday./aa

A Turkish fisherman and his crew were harassed by the Greek Coast Guard while fishing in international waters, a video he made of the incident shows.

Ilker Ozdemir said Thursday that he was fishing in international waters off Turkiye’s Gokceada island and a few miles from Greece’s Samothrace island.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Ozdemir said they make a living by fishing around Gokceada, located off the coast of Turkiye’s northwestern Canakkale province, adding they were in an area known as the Giraffe Cliffs, which is in international waters.

“This region is located six miles (9.6 kilometers) off the Greek island of Samothrace. It is in international waters. These are waters that we should all use,” he said.

“The Greek Coast Guard boat came near us while we were fishing. They came before as well, but we never took a video of it. We launched a YouTube channel recently and we had cameras this time. We took a video of the incident. They harass us regularly. They scare us, and they even pulled a gun on us in the past,” said Ozdemir.

He said they called the Turkish Coast Guard immediately and its teams intervened in a very short time.

Ozdemir said the Greek Coast Guard team that came to harass them told them that they were in Greek waters, but his crew also recorded the coordinates, and it shows that it was indeed international waters.

“They threatened to shoot us, sink our boat. But we refuse to go. We were fishing for about two to three hours and then we returned. They returned to their waters and watched us the whole time,” he added./aa

The Human Rights Committee of the Turkish parliament said Thursday that Greece has been convicted in the conscience of humanity for its treatment of migrants.

Speaking to the committee members, Hakan Cavusoglu reminded that at least 12 irregular migrants were found frozen to death in northwestern Turkiye after they were pushed back from neighboring Greece.

"Greece has been convicted in the conscience of humanity for its practices towards migrants and will one day be condemned before international law," Cavusoglu said.

The deaths of the migrants "has once again revealed the extent of Greece's actions against human rights and international law, and how it recklessly endangered the lives of migrants," he added.

Twelve of 22 migrants who were "pushed back" by Greek border forces Wednesday and stripped of their clothes and shoes froze to death.

The Governor's Office of Edirne province in northwestern Turkiye released a statement, saying the bodies of nine migrants were found in Pasakoy village of Ipsala district, less than 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the Greek border.

Turkiye has been the main transit point for asylum seekers attempting to enter Europe to begin new lives, particularly those fleeing war and persecution.

Turkiye and international human rights groups have repeatedly condemned Greece's illegal practice of pushing back asylum seekers, saying it violates humanitarian values and international law by endangering the lives of vulnerable people, including women and children./aa

A mosque in Austria’s capital Vienna was vandalized and attacked by sympathizers of the PKK terror group on Thursday.

The group, which earlier attacked the Central Mosque of Austrian Turkish-Islamic Culture and Social Assistance Union (ATIB), targeted the Ebubekir Mosque.

Ankara’s Ambassador to Vienna Ozan Ceyhun regretted the attack on the holy night of Laylat al-Raghaib that marks the beginning of the Islamic month of Rajab.

“Video of the perpetrators, who dared to attack places of worship, has been given to the authorities. We hope they are quickly caught and brought to justice,” he told Anadolu Agency.

Ceyhun said embassy officials are ready to cooperate with authorities against the attacks aimed at disrupting peace in Austria. Turkish officials will closely follow the case, he added.

Austrian Minister for Integration Susanne Raab and other politicians also condemned the attacks, and pointed to the importance of freedom to worship.

Faika El-Negashi, a spokesperson of the ruling Green Party, said it was an attack on democracy and freedom to worship.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkiye and the US – has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children and infants./aa

The British government approved a fifth coronavirus vaccine on Thursday for those aged 18 and older.

The Nuvaxovid vaccine, produced by US company Novavax, is the first protein-based coronavirus vaccine and provides a 90% protection rate against the virus and various mutations, said the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

“Our approval of Nuvaxovid today follows a rigorous review of the safety, quality and effectiveness of this vaccine, and expert advice from the government’s independent scientific advisory body, the Commission on Human Medicines,” said June Raine, chief executive of the MHRA.

The Independent Commission on Human Medicines also confirmed the benefits of the Nuvaxovid vaccine, and advised the population to accept it should they be offered the jab.

“Nuvaxovid is distinct from other COVID-19 vaccines currently in use in the UK as it uses recombinant protein-based technology which has been used for many years in the development of vaccines to prevent other illnesses, for example Hepatitis B,” said Sir Munir Pirmohamed of the Commission.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid described the development as "testament" to the UK's "world-leading science and research expertise."

The jab, however, will not be immediately available as a review will have to be undertaken by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation and upon consideration, the vaccine will be rolled out to hospitals, clinics and pharmacies across the country.

The UK’s Vaccine Taskforce placed an order for 60 million doses of the Nuvaxovid vaccine in 2020 which were expected in the second half of 2021.

The delivery, however, was beset by delays because of manufacturing problems and US regulatory processes.

The COVID-19 vaccines currently approved for use in the UK are Moderna, Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen./agencies

The Turkish president on Thursday met the Crimean Tatar leader and his accompanying delegation in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's meeting with the delegation led by Mustafa Abdulcemil Kirimoglu, who is also a deputy in Ukraine’s parliament, took place at the Boryspil International Airport.

Turkiye’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum, Communications Director Fahrettin Altun, and presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin were also present in the meeting.

Crimea's ethnic Tatars have faced persecution since Russia's 2014 takeover of the peninsula.

Turkey and the US, as well as the UN General Assembly view the annexation as illegal./aa

Four irregular migrants, who were lucky enough to survive the cold weather after being mistreated and pushed back by Greek authorities, have recalled their plight.

At least 19 irregular migrants were found frozen to death near the Greek-Turkish border after Greek border officials stripped them of their clothes and pushed them back to Turkish territory.

Riyaz A., a Bangladeshi national who is one of the survivors, told reporters that he is devastated by the loss of his friends and that they were mistreated by Greek authorities.

“They didn’t give us food or water for three days. We were not properly dressed for the weather, it was raining a lot. They pushed us back to Turkiye. Some of us moved fast (in Turkiye) while others took a rest. We did not rest, continued and found a vehicle. Then a Turkish soldier gave us shoes, coats, food. Because of this treatment we received, we survived,” he said.

The survivor said they want their voices be heard, and that irregular migrants should be treated humanely.

“We are human ... the European Union sees and hears this. My friends died because they (Greece) pushed them back while they were wearing thin clothes. No country in the world treats migrants like this. We come from a poor place. We are not here to steal, we are here to work,” he said.

Muhammed T., another Bangladeshi national, also said that they were subjected to mistreatment in Greece.

Speaking to reporters, Syrian national Ahmed Mustafa said he started his journey to Europe, but was caught in Greece and imprisoned for four days.

“The beat us, tortured us. They treated us very badly. They have no mercy, they treat everyone badly. They sent us across the border to Turkiye and chased us with sticks. They sent back some of us naked. They also took our phones. May Allah be pleased with the Turkish soldiers, they gave us food and clothes,” he said.

Wet, cold prison

In tears, another Syrian national, Enver Yilmaz, said Greek border officials stripped them of their clothes and beat them.

“They took us to a wet and cold prison. The blankets where we were staying were all wet. We froze. They treat women, children, everyone badly,” he said.

"They put us in boats like that (naked) and pushed back to the Turkish side. May Allah be pleased with the Turkish soldiers and Turkiye. They gave us shoes, clothes and food."

On Thursday, Turkish authorities recovered the bodies of seven more migrants who were said to be pushed back by Greek border forces, raising the death toll from 12 on Wednesday.

According to Turkiye's the migrants were found frozen to death in Edirne, which shares a border with Greece.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused the EU of silence and vowed to expose Greece’s illegal pushbacks.

Meanwhile, Greek Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarachi issued a statement on Twitter saying that the incident was a "tragedy."

However, he denied that Greek forces had pushed them back into Turkiye, saying any suggestion otherwise "is patently false."

Turkiye has been a key transit point for asylum seekers aiming to cross into Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.

Turkiye and international human rights groups have repeatedly condemned Greece's illegal practice of pushing back asylum seekers, saying it violates humanitarian values and international law by endangering the lives of vulnerable people, including women and children./aa

The world’s largest cut diamond went under hammer at the UK’s famous auction house Sotheby’s on Thursday.

The extremely rare diamond, named “The Enigma”, was exhibited to the public in Dubai, Los Angeles and London before the auction.

“Today we are extremely excited to present The Enigma, a truly rare fancy black carbonado diamond weighing a staggering 555.55 carats with precisely 55 facets, a technical feat for one of the toughest diamonds in existence,” said Nikita Binani, Sotheby’s jewelry specialist.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Binani said the “Sotheby’s “will be offering this absolutely unique object of art and something that is much more than a jewel, with no reserve for purchase at cryptocurrency.

“We are very excited to mention that this diamond has been recorded … as one of the largest fancy black diamonds and also the largest cut diamonds ever to be recorded and known in the world,” she added.

The Enigma was listed as the world’s largest cut diamond by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2006.

Unlike most diamonds formed deep within Earth, carbonados are found in alluvial, sedimentary deposits, close to or on Earth’s surface, the auction house explained.

“This, and their specific mineral make up suggest possible extra-terrestrial origins, either from meteoric impacts producing natural chemical vapor deposition or from diamond-bearing asteroids colliding with the Earth.”

The diamond “surpasses the weight of both the Great Star of Africa, 530.2 carats, and the Golden Jubilee, 545.67 carats, making it not only one of the largest fancy black natural-color diamonds in the world, but also the largest faceted diamond to ever appear on the auction market.”

Black diamonds are thought to have been formed from a meteoric impact or diamond-bearing asteroid that collided with Earth approximately 3.8 billion years ago, and believed to be a rare natural occurrence only found in Brazil and the Central Republic of Africa.

The diamond will receive online bids between Feb. 3 and 9./aa

The EU on Thursday updated its terrorist list extending sanctions against people and groups involved in terrorism for another six months.

The sanctions list features 13 persons and 21 entities or groups, including terror groups PKK and far-left DHKP/C.

“Dalokay Sanli was removed from the list because he died,” an EU official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Anadolu Agency, referring to the senior member of PKK, who was neutralized by Turkish security forces in April 2021 in northern Iraq.

The bloc freezes funds and financial assets of the enlisted persons and groups, and bans EU operators to make economic resources available for them.

The EU applies a separate sanction mechanism for al-Qaida and ISIS/Daesh.

Several terror groups, which carried out or planned attacks in Turkiye, including IBDA-C and TAK, are also on the updated terror list, according to the official.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkiye, the PKK − also listed as a terrorist organization by Turkiye and the US − has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.

The DHKP-C is responsible for numerous terror attacks in Turkiye, including the 2013 attack on the US Embassy in Ankara, which left a Turkish security guard martyred and a Turkish journalist injured. It is also listed as a terrorist organization by Turkiye and the US./aa
