Natural gas contracts start first trading day of week with 14% increase to €88 per megawatt-hour

Natural gas prices in March futures contracts in Europe started the first trading day of the week with a 14% increase, with the escalation in tension between Russia and Ukraine.

The price of March futures contracts traded at TTF, the Netherlands-based virtual natural gas trading point, closed last week at around €77 per megawatt-hour (MWh) and increased on Monday by 14% to €88 per MWh.

The price of natural gas contracts for March delivery traded at €83 at 10.37 am local time on Monday.

This price rate marks a substantial increase from this time last year when prices of natural gas contracts in Europe were in the region of €18.

EU countries currently import 90% of their natural gas needs, with Russia supplying the majority.

Natural gas prices in Europe are rising with the threat of supply disruptions due to rising tensions on the Russia-Ukraine border.

Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser to US President Joe Biden, said Sunday the US administration believes Ukraine could be invaded by Russia "any moment", increasing anxiety in global energy markets./YS

Fires continued to ravage Argentina’s northeastern province of Corrientes on Monday, according to authorities.

Authorities said 519,000 hectares have been affected by the blazes, with homes and hotels evacuated due to the advancing flames.

The head of Civil Defense Operations in Corrientes, Orlando Bertoni, said the most troubling area is the town of Ituzaingó.

Bertoni told local news agency Télam that a large hotel chain belonging to Howard Johnson Co. which sits on the banks of the Paraná River had to be evacuated due to the threat of fires and smoke alongside homes in the affected area.

He added that authorities have extinguished one fire but others remain which continue to affect forests, fields and estuaries.

Bertoni said firefighters are continuing to battle the blazes alongside other authorities including the Argentine Army, adding teams fighting the fires have had success in quelling some of them in San Miguel and Loreto.

Authorities are now focusing efforts on fires in Ituzaingó and Riachuelo.

The National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) reports that fires have impacted 519,000 hectares, which is six times higher than figures in January 2021.

According to a study carried out by INTA technicians Griselda Sauceda, Ruth Perucca and Ditmar Kurtz, "satellite evidence indicates that there is a continuous increase in the total area affected by burning since the beginning of 2022, at an average rate of almost 20,000 hectares per day."

Low rainfall in the last two years coupled with high temperatures have propelled the fires.

Authorities continue to battle the blazes, with water planes being sent by the country’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and efforts from other provincial governments such as firefighters.

In late December, the Federal Council of the Environment (Cofema) and the Ministry of Environment declared an emergency throughout Argentina for 12 months due to the threat of fires./aa

All of the migrants were referred to the provincial migration office following health assistance./aa

The government can’t restrict fundamental rights in the garb of maintaining public order, the counsel for the girl students seeking permission to wear the hijab told the Karnataka High Court on Monday.

Meanwhile, the high court refused to intervene to restrain media from reporting the case hearing, as the advocate defending petitioners submitted that the hijab case will have an impact on voting in states where elections are underway. Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi stated that if at all they can do something, they will have to stop live streaming of the court proceedings. Other than this, they can’t take any measure to restrict media.

During the hearing on Monday, senior advocate Devdatt Kamat told the bench of Chief Justice Awasthi, Justice Krishna S. Dixit and Justice Khaji Jaibunnesa Mohiyuddin that the College Development Committee (CDC) has no legal statutory basis to frame rules on uniforms.

“The government’s decision in this regard shows lack of wisdom and a legislator heading the committee will decide on fundamental rights. It is not legal to restrict the wearing of hijab,” he argued.

Kamat stated that all Central schools run by the Central government are allowing the wearing of hijab and petitioners have been wearing hijab of the same colour as the uniform since long.

“The state has made a fatal error while referring to public order in its circular. There is not even mention of Article 21 in the quoted order by the government on the basis of which the circular restricting hijab is issued,” he said.

He maintained that the state is an outsider when it comes to the point of belief, though it seems regressive to others. Authorising college committees is equal to making mockery of the fundamental rights, he said, while maintaining that maintaining public order is an enshrined responsibility of the state and it can’t deny rights and say because certain acts incites violence, they are restricting students from wearing hijab.

Advocate Kamat pleaded that the bench should permit students to wear hijab of the same color of the uniform.

The bench subsequently adjourned the matter till Tuesday.

The bench had last week given an interim order that no religious symbols are allowed for the students in schools and colleges until the final order of the court, thus barring use of both hijab and saffron shawls in the school and college premises.

However, petitioners moved the Supreme Court challenging the interim order but it had rejected the demand of urgent hearing by petitioners and said that it will only interfere at an appropriate time. The state government has resumed function of schools till Class 10 and is expected to take call on reopening colleges soon.

Thirteen students from the Government High School in Shivamogga district refused to take the SSLC (Class 10) preparatory examination after being asked to remove hijab.

The students of Government Public School of Shivamogga district were stopped by teachers and asked to remove their hijab. The students, however, outrightly refused to shun hijab and demanded that they be allowed to write exams.

The teachers and school management tried to convince them by asking them to write exams in a separate room without a hijab. However, the students rejected the offer and decided to boycott the examination. Parents of the girls, who reached school there, also supported their children and took them home saying that without hijab they can’t attend classes.

Aliya Mehat, a student who boycotted the exam for hijab, said, “The court is yet to give order, whatever it is we will not take off hijab. It is okay if we don’t write exams. Exams are not important for me, religion is important. We will not come to school if hijab is not made mandatory. My parents have asked me to come back home, if asked to take off my hijab,” she said. However, more than 100 other Muslim girls, who are studying in the school, attended the classes without a hijab.

Meanwhile, Congress legislators attended the joint session of the assembly wearing black badges amid hijab row under the leadership of Opposition leader Siddaramaiah. The party maintained that they were “protesting the collapse of constitutional values during the administration of the BJP in the state.”

Kaneez Fathima, the Congress MLA attended the first day session clad in hijab. While taking part in a protest against restrictions on wearing hijab by Muslim students, she had said that she would attend the Assembly session in hijab and dared the ruling party to stop her. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has said that Muslim women must come forward to dispel misconceptions about ‘hijab’ and ‘purdah’ to counter people who are spreading hate in the name of protests against it.

“My dear sisters, use this time to inform people about hijab, dispel the prejudice, express that you are not oppressed with the hijab but are respected, honoured and free with it. Your success is the success of all Muslims,” said Maulana Umrain Mahfooz Rahmani, general secretary of the board in a social media session.

Muslim women have freedom and are given respect and honour to the point that Jannat is said to be under the feet of the woman, he added.

“Hijab is the identity of a Muslim and a respectable woman. It protects from the satanic aspects of the society. Over centuries, whichever society went towards embracing nakedness got destroyed and plagued by Allah’s curse and wrath,” he said.

The cleric further emphasised that Islam has not stopped women from stepping out of the house.

“Move out in such a way that there is no obstruction to your honour and dignity. This is what Islam likes,” he said while urging Muslim women to accept hijab in their lives.

“Those who already do it should inform others about it. It will stop the propaganda and counter the hate against hijab,” added the Maulana.– IANS

Muslim immigrant families in western Sweden protested Sunday against state social services for allegedly unjustly taking their children from their homes.

Protesters holding photos of their children gathered in Gothenburg's Gustaf Adolf Torg Square and chanted slogans such as "Give us our children back," "Our children were taken from us, we were subjected to injustice" and "We want justice."

Swedish officials say that children are removed from their families under certain circumstances but have denied allegations of "kidnapping" and abuse of children.

Mikail Yuksel, head of the Swedish Nuance Party (Partiet Nyans), told Anadolu Agency that he supports the protest and sympathizes with families whose children have been taken away from their families, calling it a tragedy.

Yuksel said that many people sought his help to have their rights protected from state social services. While dismissing social media reports saying Muslim children were taken and given to Christian families as “rumors,” he said discrimination plays a role in the process.

"The social services agency's justification for taking a child from a Swedish family is not the same as the reason for taking a child from a Muslim and immigrant family. Formidable prejudices come into play for Muslim and immigrant families," he explained.

A report has been prepared by the country's Discrimination Bureau showing discrimination against immigrant families whose children have been taken away, he said.

Violence, abuse found, but state denies ‘kidnapping,’ other claims

Anders Ygeman, the minister for migration and integration, also said they are discussing the issue through dialogue with Muslim NGOs.

Ygeman also denied reports that Muslim children in Sweden had been “kidnapped” from their families.

Sunday’s demonstration followed up on a protest last week in front of the parliament in Stockholm in which Muslim families whose children had been taken away from them by social services accused it of mistreatment and abuse.

Separately, the city of Falkoping, western Sweden announced that it had ended a contract with a company that provides child care and is responsible for removing children from their families, state radio SR reported.

The Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate said in a statement that it had found violence and suspected sexual abuse associated with the company’s work.

Last Thursday, the Swedish Consulate General in Istanbul, Turkiye, denied claims of mistreatment and abuse of Muslim children by social services.

"A very aggressive rumor campaign is currently underway on various social media – both in Sweden and abroad – alleging that Swedish social services kidnap, imprison and sexually exploit Muslim children. This information is, of course, seriously misleading and the sole aim is to create tensions and spread mistrust," it said in a statement.

The statement added: "Swedish social services’ activities are governed primarily by the Social Services Act, which is based on the principle of voluntariness. However, complementary provisions in the Care of Young Persons Act make it possible in certain cases to decide on measures even without consent.”/aa

Six people from the same family, including two children, were killed in an artillery strike by the Bashar Assad regime in Syria’s northwestern Idlib province on Saturday.

Residents said the family was outside their house enjoying sunny weather and drinking tea when the shell struck. Low-flying reconnaissance aircraft circled the area, Maarat al-Naasan village in Idlib, after the strike.

The Syrian Civil Defense group, also known as the White Helmets, said the two children were aged 3 and 7. It said a total of 65 children have been killed in a renewed bombing campaign by the Russian-backed Syrian regime targeting Idlib in the past six months.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Syria war monitor, also reported the deaths. It said regime forces also shelled areas around the villages of Kafr A’ama and Taqad, west of the city of Aleppo.

"The shell fell on a civilian home," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Syrian regime and its ally Russia have regularly targeted hospitals and civilian areas since the start of the war in 2011.

The Idlib region bordering Turkey is home to about 3 million people and it is one of the last pockets to oppose Damascus.

For years, the Assad regime has ignored the needs and safety of the Syrian people, only eyeing further territory gains and crushing the opposition. With this aim, the regime has for years bombed civilian facilities such as schools, hospitals and residential areas, causing the displacement of almost half of the country's population.

The Idlib de-escalation zone was forged under an agreement between Turkey and Russia. The area has been the subject of multiple cease-fire agreements, which have been frequently violated by the Assad regime and its allies.

A fragile truce was brokered between Moscow and Ankara in March 2020 in response to months of fighting by the Russia-backed regime. Almost a million people have fled the Assad regime’s offensive yet the regime still frequently carries out attacks on civilians, hindering most from returning to their homes and forcing them to stay in makeshift camps./DS

The UN World Food Program (WFP) on Sunday warned of rising poverty among Yemeni families amid continued fighting across the war-torn country.

"The currency depreciation and rising food prices have pushed many in Yemen into extreme poverty," WFP said in a statement.

As a result, "hunger is rising, leaving many dependent on food assistance," it added.

The humanitarian situation in Yemen is aggravated by the depreciation of the local currency, which reached more than 1,200 riyals against the US dollar in 2022.

Before the outbreak of the Yemeni conflict in 2014, the dollar price was 215 Yemeni riyals in the local market.

On Monday, the UN Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also warned that "11 million people [in Yemen] will end up closer to starvation" due to the shortage of funding for the life-saving activities in Yemen.

Yemen has been engulfed by violence and instability since 2014, when Houthi rebels captured much of the country, including the capital, Sanaa.

A Saudi-led coalition aimed at reinstating the Yemeni government has worsened the situation, causing one of the world’s worst man-made humanitarian crises, with nearly 80%, or about 30 million people, needing humanitarian assistance and protection and more than 13 million in danger of starvation, according to UN estimates./aa

A woman and her two children died of hunger and thirst in southwestern Somalia, as the local administration on Sunday feared more deaths due to the ongoing drought in the Bakool province.

Rabdhure District Commissioner Mohamed Kheyr Salaad told local media that the district is severely affected by the drought and that he fears that more people will die as a result of water and food scarcity, as well as malnutrition.

The region has been blocked by the al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group al-Shabaab for the past eight years, making it impossible for people to receive humanitarian aid by road, he said.

"The only way to reach affected people who are suffering from the blockage is by air or roads leading to the Ethiopian border," he said.

He added that the current situation is beyond the regional administration's capacity to handle, as humanitarian aid from Bakool province has yet to reach the affected area.

Over 4.3 million people need humanitarian assistance in the Horn of African country due to the climate change-related drought in Somalia, which is currently battling one of its worst droughts in decades.

The drought has also resulted in the deaths of over 700,000 livestock in just two months, according to international humanitarian organizations.

The government has already declared the drought a humanitarian state of emergency./aa
