Nearly 3.5 million refugees have fled Ukraine since Russia's invasion and are now camped in temporary accommodation.

Most of the Ukrainians have arrived at border points in Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary, data compiled by the United Nations refugee agency shows, putting pressure on the European Union countries now attempting to shelter them.

Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said the government would seek to extend a state of emergency to deal with the influx, with officials trying to relocate new arrivals to cities outside the capital of Prague to ease the pressure.

"The Czech Republic is balancing on the edge of capacities where we are able to provide comfortable living conditions," Rakusan said during a television debate. "Living in gyms, sleeping bags, or campsites is not good for life."

The Czech parliament also approved three laws this week making it easier for Ukrainian refugees to access work, health insurance, and allow schools to raise class capacities.

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said seven humanitarian corridors would open on Sunday to enable civilians to leave frontline areas.

In Poland, whose Ukrainian community of around 1.5 million is the region's largest, refugees waited in line for a third day in front of the National Stadium temporarily turned into an administration office to register new arrivals.

More than 2 million Ukrainians have crossed into Poland since the invasion by Russia, which it says is a "special operation" aimed at demilitarizing Ukraine, began on Feb. 24. Ukraine and the West say Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an aggressive war of choice.

Warsaw officials say this has increased the Polish capital's population of 1.8 million by 17%.

"We never know how many refugees will arrive," Warsaw city council spokesperson Monika Beuth-Lutyk said. "We have done everything we can and the next move is up to the government to implement a system and to build refugee towns."

'Panic starts'

At the Medyka crossing, Poland's busiest along the country's some 500-kilometer (310-mile) border with Ukraine, aid groups were preparing for a surge of refugees if humanitarian corridors allowed Ukrainians in areas under siege to escape.

An International Organization for Migration (IOM) spokesperson said that thousands of people have crossed daily at Medyka alone.

"We don't know how many people and we don't know when they will arrive," the group's spokesperson Jorge Galindo told Reuters.

With men of the conscription age obliged to stay and help defend Ukraine, mostly women and children have entered the EU.

Newly arriving refugees described panic during their escapes that included shelling and shooting overhead by Russian forces as they fled their cities and began long journeys to safety.

"Rockets started to fly," said Natalia Strelcova, who entered Poland with her cat after fleeing the Dnipro region.

"It becomes scary, panic starts, and you want to run away somewhere," Strelcova added./Reuters

Hungarian Defense Ministry Undersecretary Gaspar Maroth said Sunday that 40 tactical wheeled armored vehicles named Gidran were produced in Turkey and delivered to the Hungarian Armed Forces.

Another 100 will be produced in Hungary, he said.

Gidran is the name given to Turkish company Nurol Makina's Ejder Yalçın 4x4 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, which are being produced under licenses.

The Turkish armored vehicle manufacturer in a separate statement Sunday said that Nurol Makina Hungary, a recently established branch, signed a cooperation agreement for the production of armored vehicles in Hungary with the authorities of the Hungarian state and their partners.

Nurol Makina made its debut in the European market by launching its first company abroad in Hungary on March 17.

Nurol Makina has made a name for itself with its recent export successes. It meets the needs of allied countries as well as Turkey with its 4x4 tactical wheeled armored vehicles such as the Yörük and Ejder Yalçın, produced at its modern facilities in the capital Ankara.

The Turkish defense industry firm introduced new products and vehicles with increased capabilities to users around the world in 2021, Nurol Makina General Manager Engin Aykol told Anadolu Agency (AA).

With the establishment of Nurol Makina Hungary, activities such as design, production and assembly will be carried out with local partners in Hungary. Solutions specific to needs will be developed by being included in the modernization projects of the Hungarian army. In addition, support will be received from Hungarian engineers.

Previously, local news said that the Hungarian army will receive more than 300 new military vehicles, and the project is based on the Turkish military vehicle family Ejder Yalçın MRAP 4x4.

The acquisition of a new family of 4x4 military vehicles for the armed forces began in 2018.

The Ejder Yalçın 4x4 comes in 10 different configurations that were developed for a variety of combat and support missions. The vehicles are preferred in many countries across the Middle East, the Gulf, Asia, Africa and Europe.

The vehicle comes to the fore as one that can be part of joint operations conducted with next-generation technology vehicles found in the NATO inventory.

Ejder Yalçın has already been tested and used on the ground both by Turkey and international military units and security forces./aa

According to information provided by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA), the Natural History Museum became the most-visited museum in the United Kingdom last year, achieving a 21% increase in attendance.

It has achieved this despite being closed for five months of 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"I couldn't be prouder of these phenomenal figures given the enormous challenges posed by the pandemic – not least the closure of the museum for more than five months," Museum Director Doug Gurr said.

The museum's popular temporary exhibitions have helped drive visitor numbers over the year, including "The Fantastic Beasts: The Wonder of Nature" showcase, which is inspired by creatures dreamt up by J.K. Rowling from her "Harry Potter" spin-off series.

The exhibition, which was developed in partnership with the BBC and Warner Bros., had 128,000 visitors in 2021.

Its "Our Broken Planet: How We Got Here and Ways to Fix It" display, which engages visitors with the planetary emergency, has already been seen by 500,000 visitors since it opened its doors in May 2021.

More than 75,000 visitors have seen the museum's popular photography exhibition – "Wildlife Photographer of the Year" – since it opened on Oct. 15, 2021.

Dippy the Dinosaur, a 26-meter (85.3-feet) installation of a Diplodocus cast, will also return to the museum in May after it recently concluded a four-year tour of the U.K.

The dinosaur cast was first put on display in the London museum in 1905 and has been seen by more than 2 million people over the course of its nationwide tour.

"We have an exciting year ahead of us – we're looking forward to introducing a whole new generation to the nation's favorite dinosaur with 'Dippy Returns' opening in May and the beginning of the transformation of our gardens as part of the Urban Nature Project," the museum's director of public programs, Alex Burch, added.

"As part of our drive to become a more inclusive museum we are continuing to develop our community program and exploring ways to engage underserved audiences," he said.

The museum said it will continue to run its popular events throughout the year, including "Silent Discos," "Yoga at the Museum," "Adventure Babies" and "Behind the Scenes Spirit Collection Tour."/DPA

Around 10 million Ukrainians, more than a quarter of Ukraine's population, have fled their homes due to Russia's "devastating" war, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) chief said Sunday.

"Among the responsibilities of those who wage war, everywhere in the world, is the suffering inflicted on civilians who are forced to flee their homes," said UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi.

"The war in Ukraine is so devastating that 10 million have fled either displaced inside the country, or as refugees abroad."

UNHCR said Sunday that 3,389,044 Ukrainians had left since the Russian invasion began on Feb. 24, with another 60,352 joining the exodus since Saturday's update – a flow roughly the same as the day before.

Some 90% of those who have fled are women and children. Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 are eligible for military call-up and cannot leave.

UNICEF said more than 1.5 million children are among those who have fled abroad, warning that the risks they face of human trafficking and exploitation are "real and growing."

The U.N.'s International Organization for Migration (IOM) also said that as of Wednesday, 162,000 third-country nationals had fled Ukraine to neighboring states.

Some 6.48 million people are estimated to be internally displaced within Ukraine as of Wednesday, according to the U.N. and related agencies, following an IOM representative survey.

UNHCR initially estimated that up to 4 million people left Ukraine. Before the conflict, Ukraine had a population of 37 million in the regions under government control, excluding Russia-annexed Crimea and the pro-Russian separatist regions in the east./AFP

Yemen’s Houthi rebels carried out drone and missile strikes on Saudi Arabia that targeted key energy facilities, including natural gas and desalination plants early Sunday, Saudi state-run media reported. The attack is the latest escalation as peace talks have stalled and the war in Yemen rages into its eighth year.

No casualties were reported but civilian vehicles and homes in the area were damaged, the Saudi-led military coalition fighting in Yemen said.

The salvo also came as Saudi Arabia's state-backed oil giant Aramco announced that its profits surged 124% in 2021 to $110 billion, a jump fueled by renewed anxieties about global supply shortages and soaring oil prices.

Aramco, also known as the Saudi Arabian Oil Co., released its earnings report after weeks of intense volatility in energy markets triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Punitive sanctions on Russia, one of the world’s largest exporters of crude and petroleum products, have created turmoil in an already-tight energy market.

The international oil benchmark Brent crude hovered over $107 on Sunday after nearly touching a peak of $140 earlier this month. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have so far resisted Western appeals to increase oil production to offset the loss of Russian oil as gasoline prices skyrocket.

Brig. Yehia Sarie, the spokesperson for Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis, said the rebels had launched "a wide and large military operation into the depth of Saudi Arabia" on Sunday, firing ballistic missiles and bomb-laden drones toward Saudi Aramco facilities and other "sensitive targets” in the country.

He described the assault as retaliation for the Saudi-led "aggression and blockade” that has turned much of Yemen into a wasteland.

The Saudi-led military coalition said Houthi aerial strikes targeted a range of facilities: An Aramco liquified gas plant in the Red Sea port of Yanbu, a power station in the country’s southwest, a desalination facility in Al-Shaqeeq on the Red Sea coast, an Aramco oil facility in the southern border town of Jizan and a gas station in the southern city of Khamis Mushait.

The extent of damage to Saudi infrastructure and energy facilities remained unclear. The official Saudi Press Agency posted photos of firetrucks dousing leaping flames with water and a trail of rubble wrought by shrapnel that crashed through ceilings and pocked apartment walls. Other images showed wrecked cars and giant craters in the ground.

"There were no injuries or fatalities and there was no impact on the company’s supplies to customers,” Aramco President and CEO Amin H. Nasser told reporters in remarks carried by Saudi state media.

The barrage comes days after the Saudi-based Gulf Cooperation Council said it invited Yemen’s warring sides for talks in Riyadh aimed at ending the war – an offer dismissed out of hand by the Houthis, who demanded that negotiations take place in a "neutral” country.

Peace talks have floundered since the Houthis have tried to capture oil-rich Marib, one of the last remaining strongholds of the Saudi-backed Yemeni government in the country’s north.

Yemen’s brutal war erupted in 2015, after the Iran-backed Houthis seized the country’s capital, Sanaa, and swept across much of the north. Saudi Arabia and other Arab states launched a devastating air campaign to dislodge the Houthis and restore the internationally recognized government.

But years later, the war has settled into a bloody stalemate, with Saudi Arabia and its allies struggling to turn the tide. It has created one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with a recent U.N. report estimating that hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result of the war.

Coalition airstrikes have decimated infrastructure and struck civilian targets in Yemen like hospitals, telecommunications centers and wedding parties, drawing widespread international criticism./AP

The United States invaded Iraq on March 19, 2003, on the premise that there were weapons of mass destruction in the country, which ultimately turned out to be false.

This marks the 19th anniversary of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a moment that strikes home with Zaid al-Mahdawi, an Iraqi living in Houston who was in Baghdad when the war began.

"Most of the people in my country knew before the U.S. invasion that (weapons of mass destruction) was a pretext, a false flag, that the U.S. and Allied Forces used to make the ends justify the means," al-Mahdawi told Anadolu Agency (AA).

Al-Mahdawi was a political officer for the United Nations Assistance Mission of Iraq at the time.

"There was a lot of sadness when the war began because of all that happened to our people," he said. "There was a humanitarian cost. Whole cities were destroyed. Many innocent people were killed," he added.

The basis of the war hinged on the 16 words uttered by former U.S. President George W. Bush at his State of the Union address on Jan. 8, 2003.

"The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa," he said, referring to the then-president of Iraq.

"The statement was based on faulty intelligence from a compromised source that was itself caught up in the politicization of intelligence to provide a basis for taking action against Saddam," said professor Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, a fellow for Middle East studies at Rice University’s Baker Institute.

"The U.S. and Britain went to war to eliminate weapons of mass destruction which Iraq was presumed, erroneously, to have retained," Coates Ulrichsen told AA. "The Bush administration also believed there was a link between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaida, which British officials tried unsuccessfully to counter, as no such link existed," he added.

The invasion led to the capture of Saddam in December 2003. He was handed over to a court for trial, found guilty and executed in 2006.

But political turmoil in Iraq, the U.S. military’s continued presence in the region and no trace of chemical weapons being found created a firestorm of criticism against the U.S., as to why they invaded Iraq in the first place.

"The Bush administration initially attributed much of the early resistance to U.S.-led forces in Iraq to ‘regime dead-enders,’” said Coates Ulrichsen, "but the fact that the war continued long after Saddam’s capture and execution indicated that the insurgency had far greater depth than was at first assumed," he explained.

Nearly two decades later, Iraqis like al-Mahdawi are still frustrated and angry about a war they believe should never have happened.

"The U.S. spent billions and billions of dollars for nothing," said al-Mahdawi. "Just because you are stronger, doesn’t mean you are smarter. The U.S. felt it knew everything but didn’t want to listen to anyone else. They removed the regime, but they couldn’t control the country," he said.

Due to the false pretenses that led to the war and the fact that no chemical weapons or weapons of mass destruction were ever found, the U.S. has since been seen in a different light by the rest of the world.

"The invasion of Iraq caused immense damage to the American and British image in the Middle East," said Coates Ulrichsen, "which was comparable in the British case to the fallout from the Suez Crisis in 1956 and which took a generation to recover from."

"The Iraqi people suffered a decade of internal displacement caused by the multiple and overlapping conflicts triggered by the invasion and the insurgency and which culminated in the horror of the emergence of ISIS and its capture of large areas of Iraq between 2014 and 2017," he added, using a different acronym for the Deash terrorist group.

"That war was a huge historical mistake," emphasized al-Mahdawi, "The U.S. lost credibility and made things worse. This will have a long-term effect, with people always saying, ‘Hey, Iraq, remember what the U.S. did?’”

But there is a double-edged sword to the war that al-Mahdawi does not want to let go unnoticed or unrecognized. He moved to Houston with his family in 2015 to find a better life and live in a free country.

"The system helped me and is really great," said al-Mahdawi, who applied for American citizenship in 2022.

"(The U.S.) has really provided me an alternative home with open arms," he said. "They don’t treat me differently because I am from a different culture or have a different religion or have an accent when I speak," he added.

Like many Iraqis and Iraqi-Americans, al-Mahdawi said the world will never forget the atrocities of the war.

"It was a huge mistake that can’t just be struck from the record," he said.

But al-Mahdawi believes lessons can be learned from history and hopes the U.S. will not make the same mistake.

"We accept the things we can’t change because it’s out of our control," he said. "I have hope that the U.S. will find good solutions and make important and significant changes in how they deal with other countries."

"We must move on, be realistic that we cannot change the past, and go forward to the future," added al-Mahdawi./aa

Syria under Bashar Assad may turn into a big Wagner, providing mercenaries whenever Russia needs in its conflicts, as seen in the case of Syrian fighters from regime-held areas being sent to Ukraine, a member of the Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces (SMDK) and general coordinator of the Turkey-Syria Joint Commission, Ahmad Baccora said.

Speaking to Daily Sabah, Baccora said that Syrians under the regime could fulfill their obligatory military duty fighting alongside Russia. Moscow has promised them a salary of $1,500 to fight in Ukraine, plus rewards and compensation if they are injured. According to reports, fighters of the YPG/PKK are also sent to the conflct.

The Kremlin said recently that volunteers, including those from Syria, were welcome to fight alongside Russia's military in Ukraine. Last week, a war monitor said Russia had drawn up lists of 40,000 fighters from Assad's Syrian army and allied militia ranks on standby for deployment in Ukraine.

Moscow's recourse to Syrian mercenaries comes from Russia's intervention in 2015 in the war-torn country on behalf of the regime, helping Assad clock in decisive victories in the decadelong conflict. Russia's air force notably helped regime forces during their siege of opposition-held Aleppo. Assad is among the few heads of state to openly support Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Syrian fighters have been deployed in foreign battles before – Russia recruited them to fight alongside putschist Gen. Khalifa Haftar in Libya who attacked the U.N.-recognized government in Tripoli. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy slammed Russia's decision to recruit Syrians, saying Russia was hiring "murderers."

"Europe’s support for Syria has been insufficient," Baccora said, adding that the European Union has also deceived Ukraine by giving false hopes of concrete support. He also talked about the West's hypocrisy regarding the issue of migration. While Middle Eastern refugees have seen pushback and violence at borders, Ukrainian refugees were welcomed with open arms due to their European identity. "Their human rights are only valid to their own people," Baccora said, stating that his wife and many family members also have blue eyes but Syrians faced harsh discrimination after the war erupted.

On the other hand, he also highlighted that "Ukraine could be a new opportunity for Syria, as Russia’s attention is focused on the war ongoing in eastern Europe, significantly decreasing attacks on opposition-held areas in Syria."

Fighting has largely stopped, Baccora said. "Russia’s presence in Ukraine could lead to a vacuum. Moscow directing its focus and means on Kyiv might weaken the Assad regime," he explained.

Furthermore, the Russian pressure to bring the PKK and the Syrian regime together has also lessened. In an unusual incident, he stated that a PKK headquarters in the country’s northeast, hanged the flag of the Syrian opposition’s independence flag for the first time in an Arab majority district, signaling a shift in allegiances.

"The army of the regime has lost its strength," he said, indicating that no experienced fighters are left while the regime depends on young recruits and foreign powers to advance its goals. Children are often abducted and only released in return for money, which many families are not able to afford as the regime turns a blind eye to such incidents.

Speaking on the deteriorating living conditions, especially in Damascus and regime-held areas, he said human trafficking and drug smuggling by regime-linked groups and Iran-aligned militia are common.

Describing Syria as a "collapsed state" as the regime also suffers from a deteriorating war economy, he said that the regime and members of the Assad family also abuse aid coming from the United Nations and other aid agencies, using the aid for their own gains instead of directing it to the needy.

Syria's economy has been battered by a decade of conflict and grueling sanctions.

The war in Syria left half a million people dead, mostly in attacks by the regime and its allies, including both Russian and Iranian forces, as well as a myriad of militia groups.

Around 4 million people, at least half of them displaced, now live in the northwestern Syria region, the last enclave fighting Assad's rule despite years of deadly Russian-backed offensives.

"Syrians are unable to even obtain their basic needs. The economy is as bad as the living conditions. Health services are almost nonexistent while frequent electricity cuts are experienced on a daily basis," Baccora elaborated.

‘No hope for solution’

Meanwhile, a new round of talks involving the constitutional committee seeking a solution to the ongoing 11-year war in the country will resume in Geneva for five days from Monday, according to the U.N.

However, Baccora said: "We have no hope from this round of negotiations. The Assad regime continues its irreconcilable stance and will again cause problems."

Speaking on the seventh round of the drafting body of the constitutional committee, he said that the sides are trying to agree on the fight against terrorism, elections and a constitution, but the regime hinders the process.

He also reiterated that the Syrian opposition criticized the U.N. for advocating a "step for step" approach to resolving the grinding conflict, as it would further embolden an intransigent regime.

Talks were last held in Geneva in October when U.N. special envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen said that the Syrian government’s refusal to negotiate on revisions to its constitution was a key reason for their failure. The talks in October followed a nine-month hiatus in the U.N.-led meetings of the Syrian constitutional committee.

A 2012 U.N. road map to peace in Syria approved by representatives of the U.N., Arab League, the EU, Turkey and all five permanent U.N. Security Council members call for drafting a new constitution. It ends with U.N.-supervised elections with all Syrians, including diaspora members, eligible to participate. A Security Council resolution adopted in December 2015 unanimously endorsed the road map.

At a Russia-hosted Syrian peace conference in January 2018, an agreement was reached to form a 150-member committee to draft a new constitution. A smaller 45-member body would do the actual drafting, including 15 members from the government, opposition and civil society. However, it took until September 2019 for the committee to be formed.

Arab states

Baccora speaking on the recent steps Turkey has taken to normalize its relations with several Arab countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt and Saudi Arabia, said that such a rapprochement could also be beneficial for the opposition and Syria.

"Turkey-Arab countries normalization could benefit the Syrian opposition. They oppose us because we are close to Turkey," he said.

However, Baccora also criticized the Arab states’ recent attempts to legitimize Assad and include the country once again into the Arab League and reintroduce him into the international community.

Syria was expelled from the 22-member Arab League and boycotted by its neighbors after the conflict broke out 11 years ago. With the war having fallen into a stalemate and Assad recovering control over most of the country thanks to military assistance from allies Russia and Iran, Arab countries have inched closer toward restoring ties with the Syrian dictator in recent years.

He also slammed the Arab League statement issued last week. On March 9, the foreign ministers of Arab League member countries convened in Egypt's capital Cairo and passed a resolution condemning Turkey for allegedly interfering in the internal affairs of Arab countries and calling on Ankara to stop interfering in Syria.

"They criticize Turkey but dare not speak against Iran or Russia," Baccora said./DS

Muslim immigrant families in western Sweden continued their protests on Sunday against state social services for allegedly unjustly taking their children from their homes.

Protesters, demonstrating in different cities of Sweden since Feb. 7, gathered in Gothenburg's Gustaf Adolf Torg Square for their eighth demonstration.

Families were holding photos of their children and chanted slogans such as "Give us our children back", "Our children were taken from us, we were subjected to injustice," and "We want justice."

Speaking at the protest, a Ukrainian-national, Victoria Johansson, said she had been living in Sweden for many years and that her two children, one 5 months old and the other 2 years old, were taken from her.

Johansson said the social services took her children away after she broke up with her Swedish husband, and added: "I didn't know about this protest. When I came to a library here, I saw this crowd and joined."

Noting that there are many families in Sweden whose children are taken away from them, Johansson stressed that they "must be strong."

Mikail Yuksel, the head of the Swedish Nuance Party (Partiet Nyans), voiced support to the protests saying children of hundreds of families have been taken away in the past year in Sweden.

"There are those who were taken rightly, but also those unfairly. We try to identify the ones taken unfairly and try to help through the law," he added./aa

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck is embarking on a mission to wean his country off Russian gas imports, with the first leg of his Gulf visit set to begin on Saturday.

Before his departure, Habeck highlighted concerns about heating and electricity in Germany next winter.

"If we don't receive further gas supplies next winter, and the deliveries from Russia are capped or stopped, we wouldn't have enough to keep all our houses warm and to keep all our industry running," he said.

In Qatar, one of the world's largest exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), Habeck is scheduled to meet with the emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and government ministers.

A large proportion of Qatar's LNG currently goes to Asia.

The German minister will be accompanied by a high-ranking business delegation.

Further talks are planned in Qatar on Saturday before Habeck departs for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where he is scheduled to meet with ministers on Monday.

The trip is part of efforts to diversify German gas imports as the nation seeks to reduce its dependency on Russia in light of the Ukraine war. Habeck traveled to Norway on a similar mission earlier in the week.

While Germany wants alternative LNG sources in the short term, Habeck's long-term goal is to switch to cleaner energy sources. For that reason, the UAE is considered an important partner as a potential source of "green" hydrogen.

Habeck's ministry has stressed that human rights issues will also be addressed during the visits./aa
