UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned on Friday a series of bomb attacks across Afghanistan that left dozens of people dead, and injured many others.

More than 30 people were killed in the northeastern Kunduz province of Afghanistan as an explosion struck a mosque shortly after the Friday prayers. More than 40 others were injured, according to Taliban's interim government.

Guterres "extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a swift recovery to those injured," his spokesman said.

"Attacks against civilians and civilian objects, including mosques, are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law," Eri Kaneko said in a statement.

The multiple blasts targeting civilians in Afghanistan, currently ruled by the interim Taliban-led administration, raise security concerns after months of relative peace.

The security situation had improved after the Taliban returned to power last August, according to UN reports./aa

Marine scientists and conservationists have teamed up in the East African country of Tanzania to restore coral reefs along the Indian Ocean coast.

Coral reefs, an important habitat for fish species as breeding grounds, also known as underwater gardens for the cacophony of color, have been under threat due to blasting techniques used by fishermen.

Leonard Chauka, a marine science researcher, told Anadolu Agency that so far, they have restored 10,000 square meters of degraded coral reefs. He said the initiative was given a new lease of life to most critical reefs to combat increasing climate pressures and human activities.

“The idea is to grow many of them to allow protection of reefs in wider area and corals long-term recovery,” he said.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Flower Msuya, a senior scientist at the Institute of Marine Sciences, University of Dar es Salaam, said the country was losing coral reefs at a fast pace which has the potential to impact the marine life.

“We lose coral reefs so quickly that we could ever imagine, the impact to marine life and the livelihoods of people is big,” he said.

Besides playing a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, the colorful coral reefs also lure thousands of tourists every year.

“The corals take many years to grow and develop, it may take ages for those affected by blast fishing to recover,” said Msuya.

Scientists believe that these reefs, which form large underwater structures are composed of the skeletons of colonial marine invertebrates called coral.

She said that poor fishing methods and the rising sea temperatures are reasons behind fast depleting reefs across the coast of Tanzania.

Urging the government to intensify marine protection, Msuya asked for curbing illegal fishing methods notably blast fishing, which has pushed the marine ecosystem to the brink of collapse.

Also known as underwater rainforests, the biodiversity hotspots dotting the coast of East Africa, offer crucial habitat to marine species and act as a buffer for the surging coastal storms, local scientists said.

Suffering from bleaching

Chauka said the corals in Tanzania were also suffering from a phenomenon called bleaching.

“This bleaching event was caused by elevated sea surface temperature by 2 degrees Celsius higher than average,” he said.

In Tanzania’s Pemba and Mafia islands, almost 90% of the reefs have suffered coral mortality.

He said due to death of corals because of illegal fishing and the warming of waters have denuded coastal areas from the natural buffer against storms and high waves.

A 2021 study by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network -- UN-backed data network -- showed that 14% of the world's corals reefs were already been lost in the past decade.

The study, which examined 10 coral reef-bearing regions globally found that loss was mainly attributed to coral bleaching, which happens when corals, under stress from warmer water, expel the colorful algae living in their tissues, making them turn white.

While coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, they support more than 25% of marine biodiversity, including turtles, fish, and lobsters, which fuel global fishing industries.

The reefs are responsible for an estimated $2.7 trillion annually in goods and services, including tourism, the report said.

Along with the coast of Tanga -- a port city in northeast Tanzania – one can see the ruins of the dead coral reef. Scientists say these corals have died due to homemade explosives used by local fishermen to catch fish.

“We use these bombs because they spare us some effort in fishing,” said Christopher Kezrahabi, a fisherman in Tanga.

One bottle of explosive can kill everything within a 30 to 100 feet radius.

According to scientists, two-thirds of the East African country’s coastline harbors reefs, which support fish, crabs, and other marine animals and play a crucial role in controlling carbon dioxide levels in the ocean.

Beyond environmental destruction, blast fishing badly affects the livelihood of genuine fishermen.

“I have seen a huge decline of daily fish catches, we are forced to go even deeper into the sea,” said Japhet Makombe, a fisherman in Tanga./aa

Mosques and an anti-Muslim monitoring group on Thursday condemned an attack against Muslims earlier in the week at a mosque in East London.

Two Muslims were injured in a racially aggravated assault around 9 p.m. Tuesday outside the Sri Lankan Muslim Center in East Ham.

The attack was carried out by thugs carrying bottles and hockey sticks. It took place as worshippers were going inside for iftar, the fast-breaking meal during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Two of them suffered minor injuries from broken glass.

The Evening Standard, a London newspaper, reported eyewitness saying there were around 15 “European males” armed with “wooden poles, beer bottles, fluorescent light tubes and stones.”

A spokesman for London’s police confirmed they were investigating “a report of racially aggravated common assault following an incident outside a mosque in East Ham.”

“Police were called to reports that a group of men in Pilgrims Way, armed with bottles and hockey sticks, had attacked members of the mosque,” the spokesman said.

“One suspect is said to have set alight some paper in a bin outside the mosque. The suspects fled prior to the police’s arrival.

“Officers searched the area but found no trace of the suspects. A number of people suffered minor injuries but did not require medical treatment.”

The police spokesman added that they would put on extra patrols in the area and that no arrests have been made.

Tell MAMA, an organization that supports victims of anti-Muslim hate and records anti-Muslim incidents, re-issued its personal safety tips for Muslims and advice guides for mosques.

The East London Mosque & London Muslim Centre, which is London's oldest, largest and busiest mosque and separate from the one that was attacked, condemned the incident on its Twitter account.

“We are appalled by the attack on worshipers outside Masjid Bilal in East Ham. No communities should have to live in fear of far-right threats and violence,” they tweeted.

“We recognise that whilst Islamophobic incidents have increased, they are not often covered widely in the media, so it is more important now than ever to report anti-Muslim hate crimes.

“We remain committed to working with our local authority to be a centre where Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate crimes can be reported. We ask our communities to stay vigilant in the face of ongoing threats.

“We urge the government to provide more security to protect all of our places of worship, ensure communities feel safe, and take swift action against perpetrators.”/aa

The US state of Texas’ oldest death row inmate was executed Thursday night for killing a police officer during a traffic stop nearly 32 years ago.

Carl Wayne Buntion, 78, was administered a lethal injection at the State of Texas execution chamber in Huntsville, Texas, located 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of Houston. He died at 6.39 p.m. local time (2339 GMT).

He had been on death row three decades for the June 1990 murder of 37-year-old James Irby, an 18-year veteran of the Houston Police Department.

“I wanted the Irby family to know one thing,” said Buntion in his last written statement. “I do have remorse for what I did.”

“I hope to see you in heaven some day, and when you show up, I will give you a big hug,” Buntion’s statement continued.

Officer Irby had pulled over a car Buntion was riding in, and as Irby spoke to the driver, Buntion exited the passenger side of the vehicle and fatally shot Irby once in the head and twice in the back.

“I wish James was here to see this,” said the victim’s widow, Maura Irby, in a television interview before the execution. “It is good to close the chapter on my husband’s murder. We can now put this away.”

Buntion was convicted of capital murder in 1991 and spent the past 30 years on death row filing numerous appeals which were all thrown out.

The latest appeal was rejected on April 15.

“Mr. Buntion is a frail, elderly man who requires (specialized) care to perform basic functions,” argued his attorneys. “He is not a threat to anyone in prison and…(is) no longer capable of being dangerous.”

The wheelchair-bound Buntion was reportedly suffering from hepatitis C, cirrhosis and chronic liver disease.

The Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty said executing him would violate the US Constitution’s Eighth Amendment, which bans cruel and unusual punishment.

"The spectacle of executing a frail, elderly man who requires specialized care, including the use of a wheelchair, to perform basic functions, is deeply troubling and would be yet another stain on the State of Texas and its notorious use of the death penalty,” said the organization’s executive director, Kristin Houlé Cuellar, in an interview before the execution.

“After spending more than 30 years on death row, Carl Wayne Buntion does not pose a threat to anyone,” added Cuellar. “It serves no legitimate purpose to execute him now.”

Buntion is the first Texas death row inmate executed in 2022.

“I hope Jimmy will finally rest in peace and then we can all kind of breathe a sigh of relief,” said Maura Irby, “And just keep him in our prayers now and in our hearts.”

There are nearly 200 inmates currently on death row in the state of Texas. Of those, six are women.

Walter Moody Jr., 83, was the oldest inmate executed in the US in modern times. He was put to death in Alabama in 2018./aa

In 2017, Emmanuel Macron came to power as France’s eighth president and the youngest leader ever to occupy the Elysee Palace, his political rise in a matter of months from a rank outsider who had never contested an election to head of state nothing but dazzling.

But as he seeks a second mandate, Macron has transitioned from a maverick to a target of dissent who is bankable in Europe but widely disagreed with at home.

After delaying his bid for reelection until the last moment, he grabbed the highest tally with 27.8% of the vote in the first round of the presidential election on April 10, ahead of 11 other candidates. He will once again clash with his old rival Marine Le Pen of the National Front – against whom he won the final round in 2017 – on April 24.

Five years ago, he offered an alternative to French politics by positioning himself as a liberal centrist -- neither on the left nor on the right of the political spectrum. With a banking and finance background and a pro-business mindset, he promised to overhaul the economy from its sluggish pace.

The Macron government got off to a shaky start following massive demonstrations by the Yellow Vest movement against a proposed fuel tax. In the following years, corporate-friendly labor laws, hardened security laws, stagnant social benefits, pandemics and terrorist attacks kept the anti-government protests raging. His aggressive language fanning Islamophobia and discrimination together with economic failures have further divided the nation and fueled anti-Macron sentiment.

International arena

Notwithstanding the dissent at home, Macron has emerged as a popular leader in Europe and the international arena. A staunch pro-Europe leader, he has advocated for stronger European integration, reducing military dependency on the US via NATO for Europe’s defense. His blunt remarks on NATO even caused a public tiff and showdown with then-US President Donald Trump.

He has been at the forefront of multilateral diplomacy, engaging with the US, UK and the European Union on matters of urgent international security, whether it is to revive the stalled Iran-nuclear deal or fight for Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Macron has continued the clamorous diplomacy between Moscow and Kyiv, visiting on the ground in a bid to avert war and holding lengthy unpleasant phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an attempt to persuade him to establish a cease-fire.

Colonialism: Awkward road

As the first-generation president born after the end of colonialism, Macron is one of the only heads of state to frankly address the taboo subject of France’s history of colonialism. He condemned colonization as a "crime against humanity" and "a grave mistake and a fault of the Republic,” acknowledged the torture and civilian atrocities committed by the French army and police against Algerians and Africans, returned looted historic artifacts and heritage to their original countries and declassified sensitive military archives on the Algerian and Indochina wars.

While Macron ordered a probe into France's historical crimes in Algeria and Rwanda and admitted serious errors, he refused to issue an official apology for the past actions of the Republic. Also, his insistence on a forward-looking approach hasn't gone over well with former colonies, particularly Algeria, where relations are frayed, and Mali, where efforts to combat extremism have backfired on the French military.

Promises to the future

At a time when Europe faces grave security challenges due to the Russian threat, Macron has emphasized it is the European Union that is working to protect everyone and promote peace. He has assured France will follow the EU positions to reduce dependency on Russian energy and jointly respond to future security crises.
Macron has linked the fate of this election as a “referendum on Europe” reminding the French that his manifesto defends the idea of Europe and dismantles “the extreme right” agenda of his Euro-sceptic opponent Marine Le Pen.

On the domestic front, he has promised to boost employment, reduce nuclear power dependency, increase renewable sources of energy, cut taxes for businesses and households, hire additional nurses for health care of the elderly and recruit 10,000 police and gendarmes. His proposals to raise the minimum pension and retirement age from 62 to 65, reduce social contributions for independent workers and introduce labor law reforms are deemed unpopular.

Polls predict Macron is likely to win the elections against Le Pen in the second round. However, demonstrations proclaiming “No to Macron, no to Le Pen,” mass abstention and public anger against him could jeopardize his chances. If he succeeds, Macron will make history by being the first president in 20 years to be re-elected, but his loss against right-wing candidate Le Pen could also be consequential, pulling France down in a grave setback that would alter the political, social and economic course of the country./aa

At least 14 unmarked graves are suspected at the site of the former Gordon's Indian Residential School in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.

George Gordon First Nations chief Byron Bitternose announced in a statement Wednesday.

"In upcoming months this area will be a priority, an area for continued searching," said Bitternose. "It is my hope that one day we will be able to tell our children the whole story of what their great-grandparents, grandparents, parents and siblings endured."

The number is likely to grow as the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation lists 49 names of children who died at the school.

The details of unmarked graves, mostly children, uncovered at former Indian Residential Schools have shocked Canadians as the discoveries in the past year have inched toward 2,000.

About 150,000 First Nations, Metis and Inuit were arbitrarily taken from their homes, sometimes forcefully, and sent to one of 139 schools located across Canada.

Most were youngsters and at least 4,300 are thought to have died from malnutrition, disease and other causes and buried at school sites. In some cases, parents never found out what happened to their children.

The first school was set up in the 1820s and the last closed in the 1990s as the Canadian government tried to stamp out Indigenous culture. The George Gordon school opened in the 1880s and was shuttered in 1996.

Many schools were run by religious orders, with the Catholic Church overseeing about 60% of the schools.

Some were subjected to sexual, mental and physical abuse and the Gordon school was notorious for its treatment of children.

"This was a horrible residential school in terms of physical, in terms of sexual abuse," Eddie Bitternose, member of George Gordon First Nation and a residential school survivor, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

In 1941, records show that 11-year-old Andrew Gordon ran away from the school and froze to death.

The Indian reservation was created in 1874 and named after Chief George Gordon. Today, about 1,100 people live on the reservation./aa

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez was extradited Thursday to the US, where he will face federal drug trafficking and weapons charges.

Hernandez was delivered by the Honduran National Police to US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents at Tegucigalpa Airport and then boarded a DEA plane bound for New York, where he will be imprisoned and tried.

Hernandez, who was president from January 2014 to January 2022, had been detained in a prison of the Special Forces of the National Police known as Los Cobras since Feb. 15, the day he surrendered to police at the request of the US Department of Justice.

In the extradition request, US prosecutors claimed that between 2004 and 2022, "Hernandez participated in a violent drug trafficking conspiracy to receive multiple shipments of cocaine.”

The document states that the former president sent roughly 500,000 kilos of cocaine “to Honduras from Colombia and Venezuela, among other places.” He allegedly received "millions of dollars in bribes” from multiple narcotrafficking organizations in Honduras and Mexico.

Hernandez has repeatedly denied any involvement in the criminal conduct and has blamed the allegations against him on drug traffickers.

“This is revenge from the cartels, it’s an orchestrated plot so that no government will confront them again,” he said in a handwritten letter a month ago.

Although Hernandez was considered one of Washington’s top allies in Central America during Donald Trump’s administration, he did not enjoy the support of President Joe Biden.

The arrest occurred just days after the new leftist government of Xiomara Castro, who campaigned on fighting corruption, took office in Honduras on Jan. 27. The same day Hernandez left office, he was sworn in as Honduras’ representative to the Central American Parliament./aa

Major indices in the US stock market closed lower Thursday after hawkish remarks by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

A half-point rate hike will be on the table for the May meeting to get inflation down to the 2% goal, Powell said at an International Monetary Fund panel.

The blue-chip Dow Jones fell 368.5 points, or 1.05%, to close at 34,792.

The S&P 500 decreased 64 points, or 1.44%, to end at 4,395.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 278.4 points, or 2.07%, to finish at 13,174.

At the final bell, the VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, soared 12.9% to 22.94.

The dollar index rose 0.18% to 100.6, while the yield on 10-year US Treasury notes declined 0.15% to 2.892%.

Precious metals were on the decline, with gold falling 0.10% to $1,953 and silver rising 2.08% to $24.7.

Crude oil prices were up more than 1% as global markets considered the possibility of a EU ban on Russian oil and gas, while Libyan production cuts last week raised shortage concerns.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading at $108.29, up 1.40%, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was at $103.75 -- a 1.53% gain./aa

Muslim Americans gave an estimated $1.8 billion in zakat, or charity, in 2021, according to a report.

The average Muslim gave $2,070 in zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, according to the report released last week by the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative at Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at IUPUI.

The report shows American Muslims are more apt to view zakat as an act of philanthropy or charity rather than as a tax imposed by religious authorities.

Shariq Siddiqui, the director of the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative, said much of the figure was donated during the month of Ramadan.

"It is critical that nonprofit organizations and charities find meaningful ways to engage with Muslim-American donors around Ramadan," said Siddiqui.

The biggest beneficiaries of charity were international nonprofits, which received 25.3% of all zakat funds, according to the report./aa
