Two flights of Bangladesh’s national flag carrier reached the capital Dhaka Sunday evening with 600,000 doses of Chinese Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine donated in a sign of friendship, according to official sources.

A top foreign investor in Bangladesh, China on May 12 gave Dhaka 500,000 doses.

Bangladesh received the second shipment at a time when the country is going through a critical phase of its nationwide inoculation campaign due to a vaccine shortage.

Hualong Yan, deputy chief of mission at the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka, Sunday morning confirmed on social media that the second shipment is on its way to Bangladesh.

In a statement, Bangladesh’s military’s mouthpiece, Inter Services Public Relations, also confirmed receiving the Chinese vaccines.

The South Asian delta nation of 165 million people started its nationwide vaccination program on Feb. 7 with the Covishield and the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute of India.

But on April 25, the government had to suspend the vaccination campaign a day after India stopped exporting the vaccine due to an unprecedented surge in cases and deaths there.

Though Bangladesh signed a deal with India on Dec. 13, 2020 to purchase 30 million doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine in installments, the country received just 7 million doses in two installments. However, India gave Bangladesh 3.2 million doses.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Sunday recorded 47 deaths in the last 24 hours, the highest single-day toll in a month, taking the COVID-19 casualties to 13,118.

With 2,436 new infections, the number of total cases surged to 826,922.

Bangladesh has so far inoculated over 10 million people.

Meanwhile, the country extended the ongoing border lockdown with India for another two weeks, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen told Anadolu Agency after an inter-ministerial meeting.

Bangladesh shut its border with its closest neighbor on April 26 and later extended the shutdown several times./aa

Details emerged Sunday of the first bridge to be built over Turkey's Canal Istanbul, a planned mega-project connecting the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea, taking pressure off the crowded Bosphorus Strait.

Foundations for the 1,618-meter (1 mile) bridge are expected be laid in the last week of June with a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to the Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Ministry.

The cable-stayed bridge will be built to provide a crossing around Sazlidere in the Edirne province as part of the Northern Marmara Highway (including the Third Bosporus Bridge) Project's Basaksehir-Bahcesehir-Nakkas section (including connecting roads).

The bridge, whose main span is set to be 440 meters (481.2 yards) long, will have 136 stay cables, 272 anchorages, and four lanes of traffic in both directions.

The bridge's 196-meter (643-foot) towers will be built with "diamond" geometry.

As part of the Canal Istanbul project, which was announced in 2011, a total of six new bridges will be built.

The project's total cost is projected at $15 billion, with the six bridges carrying a price tag of $1.4 billion.

Some half a million people will be employed in the construction work.

The construction of the canal, with a daily passage capacity of 185 vessels, is expected to be completed in 2025-2026.

The planned 45-kilometer (28-mile) canal will be built west of the city center on the European side of the Istanbul province.

The mega-project, which aims to prevent risks posed by vessels carrying dangerous shipments through the Bosphorus Strait, was approved by the country's Environment and Urbanization Ministry.

In a closing declaration Sunday, the G7 summit in the UK committed to share at least 1 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

At a press conference following the summit, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the summit lived up to expectations, and that the world wanted its leaders to end the “nationalistic approach” that characterized the early period of the pandemic.

On COVID-19 vaccines, the G7 final communique said: “Total G7 commitments since the start of the pandemic provide for a total of over 2 billion vaccine doses, with the commitments since we last met in February 2021, including here in Carbis Bay, providing for one billion doses over the next year.”

“Taken together, the dose equivalent of our financial contributions and our direct dose sharing mean that the G7’s commitments since the start of the pandemic provide for a total of over 2 billion vaccine doses,” it added.

China

On China, the G7 communique said: “We will promote our values, including by calling on China to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, especially in relation to Xinjiang and those rights, freedoms and high degree of autonomy for Hong Kong enshrined in the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law.

“We remain seriously concerned about the situation in the East and South China Seas and strongly oppose any unilateral attempts to change the status quo and increase tensions.”

G7 leaders also called for a “timely, transparent, expert-led, and science-based WHO-convened Phase 2 COVID-19 Origins study including, as recommended by the experts’ report, in China.”

Russia

On Russia, it said the G7 reiterated its interest in “stable and predictable relations” with Moscow and will engage in areas of mutual interest, but added: “We reaffirm our call on Russia to stop its destabilizing behavior and malign activities, including its interference in other countries’ democratic systems, and to fulfil its international human rights obligations and commitments.”

As part of the final day of events at the G7 summit, broadcaster and environmentalist Sir David Attenborough addressed the G7 leaders in a pre-recorded speech.

He said: “We know in detail what is happening to our planet, and we know many of the things we need to do during this decade.

“Tackling climate change is now as much a political and communications challenge as it is a scientific or technological one. We have the skills to address it in time, all we need is the global will to do so.”

On climate change, the G7 communique said: “Protect our planet supporting a green revolution that creates jobs, cuts emissions and seeks to limit the rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees. We commit to net zero no later than 2050, halving our collective emissions over the two decades to 2030, increasing climate finance to 2025; and to protect or conserve at least 30 percent of our land and oceans by 2030. We acknowledge our duty to safeguard the planet for future generations.”/aa

In the wake of a deadly terror attack on a hospital, Turkey on Sunday hit YPG/PKK terror targets in Syria’s Tal Rifat region and neutralized many terrorists, according to security sources.

Saturday’s hospital attack originated from terrorists in Tal Rifat.

Using Firtina (Storm) Howitzers, Turkish forces destroyed three so-called headquarters buildings, a shelter, and a position used by terrorists, and neutralized many terrorists, said the sources on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

14 dead, 32 injured

Saturday’s YPG/PKK attack on a hospital in opposition-held northwestern Syria killed at least 14 civilian patients and injured more than 32, said officials in southern Turkey.

In a statement, the Governor’s Office in Hatay, just across the border, said that grad missile and artillery shells fired by the YPG/PKK from the Assad regime-controlled Tal Rifat region hit the emergency department of the private Shifa Hospital in the center of the Afrin district.

Afrin was largely cleared of YPG/PKK terrorists in 2018 through Turkey’s anti-terror offensive Operation Olive Branch, but the terror group still targets the region to disturb the peace establish by Turkish forces.

The terror group often targets Jarabulus, Azaz, Afrin and al-Bab by attacking from adjacent Tal Rifaat and Manbij regions.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terror organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU – has been responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.

The YPG is the PKK’s Syrian offshoot.

Since 2016, Turkey has launched a trio of successful anti-terror operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and to enable the peaceful settlement of residents: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019)./aa

A terrorist wanted with a red notice was among a dozen people arrested while trying to enter Turkey, said the National Defense Ministry on Sunday.

The group was held by Turkish security forces in the southern Hatay province, which borders Syria, while trying to cross into Turkey illegally.

"One of the arrested people was a member of a radical terrorist organization sought at the international level with a red notice," the National Defense Ministry said on Twitter.

The ministry did not specify which terror group the arrestee allegedly belongs to./aa

Turkey’s machinery exports reached $9.2 billion in the first five months of this year, according to figures released by a sector association on Sunday.

The sector's exports increased by 37% year-on-year in the January-May period, and 12% versus the same period in 2019, the Machinery Exporters’ Association said in a press release.

Turkey's machinery exports to the country's 10 main destinations in this field -- such as Germany, the UK, France and Poland -- increased by 18% during the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2019.

Kutlu Karavelioglu, the head of the association, said the global goods trade increased 18% in the first quarter and suddenly surpassed $5 trillion level in the last two quarters, adding that considering that global exports have not exceeded $18.5 trillion level annually for a long time, it is inevitable that this unexpectedly pace of improvement will have after effects.

The main reason for the increase in value in the trade of goods is high orders, he stressed and noted global inflation, logistics problems and some raw materials which are on the black market or whose exports are restricted also fuel the price increase.

The concern that "the supply will not be enough" has quickly reflected in machinery and equipment investments, Karavelioglu underlined.

He highlighted that the sector has been constantly receiving new machine orders.

The sector may revise its export target of $21 billion for 2021 after these positive figures, he added.

Touching on the EU's machinery imports, which has reached $360 billion during the pandemic, Karavelioglu said Turkey's exports were $12 billion to the EU countries during this period but it is not enough.

"We aim to get a much thicker slice of this cake," he added./aa

Occupied Palestine

“Israeli” army soldiers on Sunday brutally assaulted three Palestinian workers in the occupied West Bank, according to a Palestinian medical source.

“The workers suffered bruises in the head and face,” the source told a press Agency.

According to the official Wafa news agency, the soldiers assaulted the workers after they attempted to cross “Israel”-built separation barrier near Barta’a village, north of Jenin city, on their way to their workplace.

Palestinian workers usually seek to reach their workplaces via holes in the separation wall to avoid crowdedness and long-time waiting at the “Israeli” military checkpoints.

Turkish forces "neutralized" five more PKK terrorists in northern Iraq, the National Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

The terrorists were "neutralized" as part of the Operations Pence-Simsek and Pence-Yildirim, the ministry said on Twitter.

Turkish authorities use the word "neutralize" to imply the terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

Turkey launched the Pence-Simsek and Pence-Yildirim operations on April 23 in northern Iraq’s Metina and Avasin-Basyan regions.

The PKK terror group often hides out in northern Iraq, just across Turkey's southern border, to plot terror attacks in Turkey.

The governorship is investigating the attack in coordination with local authorities, the statement added.

Turkey's National Defense Ministry denounced the attack.

“The targets of the PKK/YPG terrorist organization, which carried out the attack, came under immediate fire. This cowardly attack, which directly targeted innocent civilians, was reported to the Russian Federation,” said a ministry statement.

Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin also “strongly” condemned the attack and wished God's mercy on those who lost their lives and a speedy recovery to the wounded.

“The Syrian branch (YPG) of the terrorist group (PKK) showed its brutal face once again. Staying silent in the face of this attack means being complicit to this crime,” Kalin said on Twitter.

Turkey has often accused Western countries of turning a blind eye to the vicious attacks of the YPG/PKK, including many which target civilians, and blasted some countries such as the US for supporting the terror group.

Afrin was largely cleared of YPG/PKK terrorists in 2018 through Turkey’s anti-terror offensive Operation Olive Branch, but the terror group still targets the region to disturb the peace establish by Turkish forces.

Turkish teams collected over 1,197 cubic meters (42,271 cubic feet) of mucilage from the Sea of Marmara over the past four days, said the environment and urbanization minister on Saturday.

In a statement, Murat Kurum said operations to clear the sea of the substance, also known as “sea snot,” are ongoing at 77 locations, adding that the collected mucilage had been sent for disposal.

Turkish authorities this week announced a 22-point action plan to clear a surge of mucilage, which covers parts of the Sea of Marmara in the country's northwest.

The mucilage – mostly accumulated in Mudanya, Gemlik Bay, Gebze and its surroundings, the coastal areas of Istanbul’s Anatolian side, and around the Princes' Islands – also partially covered the shores of the Sea of Marmara.

The substance covering the central coast of the northwestern Yalova province was dispersed by the wind to coastal areas of the Cinarcik and Armutlu districts as well as the town of Esenkoy, which are important touristic hubs./aa
