The “religious association status” of a group that manages a mosque in a commune in the eastern suburbs of Paris was revoked on the grounds that it “disturbed public order.”

Among the reasons cited by French authorities was that an imam of the mosque in Noisy-le-Grand had said that “French people are made up of infidels.”

They also accused Enis Chabchoub, president of the Muslim Association of Noisy-le-Grand, of supporting BarakaCity, a banned humanitarian aid organization in France, on social media.

Refuting the allegations, the association’s management took the matter to the Administrative Court of Montreuil.

While the court dismissed the claims against the imam for lack of evidence, it rejected the group’s request for its status to be restored.

Vincent Brengarth and William Bourdon, lawyers for the association, rejected the “arbitrary decision” and said they would be filing an appeal./aa

Turkey's fight against the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) will continue with determination, the country's president said on Wednesday, the eve of the fifth anniversary of FETO’s deadly defeated coup against the Turkish government.

"Just as we carry out our fight against other terrorist groups without compromise and with determination, we will follow FETO until its last member is neutralized," Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his Justice and Development (AK) Party's parliamentary group.

July 15, the day of the defeated coup, is now marked as Democracy and National Unity Day, with commemorations of that fateful day set to be held across Turkey on Thursday.

Turkey will not turn a blind eye to those who exploit the nation under the guise of religion, said Erdogan, adding: “Let this be known.”

While infiltrating and undermining the Turkish government and other governments, FETO has cloaked itself in the facade of a religious or educational organization.

Erdogan also noted that Turkey has the power, will, and determination "to find and destroy all kinds of threats to the integrity of its homeland, the unity of its nation, and the survival of its state …no matter where they are in the world, whether they are made by using terrorist groups or brought before them using other tricks."

FETO and its US-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, in which 251 people were killed and 2,734 injured.

Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.

People’s Alliance

Erdogan also praised his People's Alliance ally, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), for their support in fighting terrorist groups.

He stressed that the People’s Alliance is the “only political structure” whose “aim is to leave a great and strong Turkey to the nation, the state, and their children."

The alliance of the two parties was forged ahead of the June 2018 general elections./aa

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday that US inflation is expected to remain high in the coming months

"Inflation has increased notably and will likely remain elevated in coming months before moderating," he told the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services during his semi-annual monetary policy report to Congress.

Powell said the coronavirus pandemic created production bottlenecks and supply constraints, and strong demand in certain sectors has been noticed with normalization, thus limited production has led to rapid price increases for some goods and services.

"Measures of longer-term inflation expectations have moved up from their pandemic lows and are in a range that is broadly consistent with the FOMC's [Federal Open Market Committee] longer-run inflation goal," he said.

Although the Fed has repeatedly said it would allow inflation to float above its 2% target for some time to heat the American economy, inflation has recently increased well above that level.

Consumer prices rose 0.9% in June on a monthly basis and soared 5.4% on an annual basis. Producer prices were up 1% and 7.3%, respectively.

Although the labor market has continued to improve, Powell said "there is still a long way to go."

"Labor demand appears to be very strong; job openings are at a record high, hiring is robust, and many workers are leaving their current jobs to search for better ones," he said.

But he noted that "the labor market has not moved up from the low rates that have prevailed for most of the past year."

The number of unemployed individuals in the US rose to 9.5 million in June, up from 9.3 million the previous month, the Labor Department said July 2.

The unemployment rate rose to 5.9% in June, after standing at 5.8% in May./agencies

The Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) intends to implement the integrated drilling project for more than 750 wells in northern Kuwait, which is one of the major projects which Kuwait will embark on to realize its goal as the country marches forwards towards the 2040 strategy, reports Al- Anba quoting senior oil sources. The sources said the KOC has invited 3 international companies — the Halliburton, Schlumberger and Weatherford to submit their ‘financial’ and ‘technical’ offers for the project which includes conducting several rounds of negotiations on prices. The sources stated KOC intends to implement the integrated drilling project in the northern fields from A to Z under one crucible./AT

Dr. Khaled Al Jarallah, the head of the COVID-19 committee at Kuwait’s Ministry of Health, said on Monday plans were afoot to ramp up vaccination campaign in densely populated areas as COVID-19 continues to spread.

Both Al Ahmadi and Hawally, the two governorates with the largest populations in the country, have reported a high number of COVID-19 cases. Al Ahmadi, which is home to around 985,000 people, recorded 35 per cent of the total number of cases while, Hawally, with a population of around 946,000, accounted for 24 per cent of the total number of cases.

Strain on health care

With the rise of COVID-19 cases, deaths and hospitalisations, Kuwait’s health system is being squeezed. A few days ago, the government-run Al Amiri hospital reportedly reached 90 per cent occupancy. Similarly, another government hospital, Mubarak Al Kabeer, said the COVID-19 wards have reached 82 per cent capacity, while the ICUs are almost full with 92.5 per cent occupancy.

In an effort to help reduce the strain on government hospitals, on Monday the government called on the Ministry of Defence and oil companies to prepare their hospitals in case the Ministry of Health is in need.

Vaccination and COVID-19

Health officials have pointed out that in order to combat the spread of the virus, people should get vaccinated. According to the Ministry of Health, around 95 per cent of those who died due to COVID-19 were unvaccinated. In addition, more than 90 per cent of people admitted to the hospital and the ICU have not received a single jab.

Roll out

Last week, the Ministry of Health announced it has so far administered around 2.3 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Out of the total number of doses administered, 923,307 people have received both jabs, which means around 22 per cent of the adult population is fully vaccinated. Meanwhile, almost 1.5 million citizens and residents have received at least one jab of the vaccine.

Kuwait is currently administering the Pfizer-BioNtech and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Last month, the Ministry of Health granted emergency authorisation for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, but it has yet to arrive in the country./agencies

The talks covered the deep-rooted relationships and means of enhancing them to serve the two peoples, and a number of issues of common concern.

In light of the announcement by the Foreign Ministry’s committee of prisoners and missing persons on the identification of ten prisoners and missing martyrs through the analysis of genetic fingerprint of the remains that were brought from Iraq, the Cabinet offered condolences to the families of those martyrs who sacrificed for their home and its territorial integrity.

Health developments
Within the government’s attention to follow up the latest developments of health situation, the Cabinet listened to a presentation made by Minister of Health Sheikh Dr Basel Hmoud Al-Sabah on the numbers of infections, deaths and recoveries in all governorates. He added that the rate of recovery exceeded 94 percent, pointing to a rise in the deaths amongst unvaccinated people, and patients in the hospitals and ICUs.

The minister also appraised the Cabinet of all efforts made by the ministry’s staff in order to combat the pandemic and variant strains as well as complete vaccination of all segments, noting that the vaccine has proven high effectiveness against the virus variants. The Cabinet expressed appreciation to the efforts made by the entire ministry’s staff to perform this humanitarian mission at these exceptional conditions. It urged the public for cooperation and continuing abidance by health requirements to ensure providing health services to all to overcome this crisis with minimal losses.

The ministers discussed the education, health and youth committee’s recommendations on the integrated plan submitted by Kuwait University, General Secretariat of the Council of Private Universities, Higher Institute of Musical Arts, and Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts regarding resuming study at educational institutions as of September 2021.

The Cabinet considered the committee’s recommendation regarding the 2021-2026 Ministry of Information’s strategy. It commended efforts of those responsible for preparing that strategy aiming to develop media in order to achieve a vision of building sustainable and pioneering media of a meaningful content that combines citizenship, originality and modernity.

The strategy abides by Kuwait’s values stemmed from moderate Islam and traditions, and aims to boost the country’s history and media as well as its Gulf and Arab culture. The Cabinet assigned the Ministry of Information to submit a report every three months on the strategy’s implementation.

The Cabinet lauded efforts by Egypt and Sudan to contain the crisis and solve it in line with the rules of international law. – KUNA

One person has died during protests that began Sunday in Cuba amid discontent fueled by a growing economic crisis during the coronavirus pandemic, the Cuban News Agency said Tuesday.

The Interior Ministry said Diubis Laurencio Tejeda, 36, died in the municipality of Arroyo Naranjo on the outskirts of Havana in what the agency described as "disturbances."

At least 219 people have been arrested or are missing, Cuba Decide, a pro-democracy group, said Tuesday. The group published a list of activists it said had been arrested by the authorities. Demonstrators took to social media to denounce the arrest of protesters Monday by Cuban security forces.

Among those detained was journalist Camila Acosta, who was covering the protests for Spain’s ABC newspaper. Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares called for her immediate release in a tweet, saying that "Spain defends the right to free and peaceful demonstrations and calls on the Cuban authorities to respect it. We defend human rights."

Thousands of people took to the streets Sunday in cities and towns across the country to protest shortages of food, fuel and medicine as well as power outages amid an economic crisis exacerbated by US-imposed sanctions. The protests are the largest to have erupted on the island in decades.

Cuba President Miguel Diaz-Canel has blamed the US for maintaining a policy of "economic asphyxiation” that has “provoked social outbreaks in the country.”

The president said there were "criminals" in the protests.

"There is a group of people that commits crimes. Yesterday, we saw delinquents. Yesterday, the demonstrations were not peaceful. There was vandalism. A totally vulgar, indecent, delinquent behavior," he said Monday. “They confronted the people with violence and the people defended themselves."

US President Joe Biden said the Cuban government has to respect the rights of its citizens to protest.

“The Cuban people are bravely asserting fundamental and universal rights. Those rights, including the right of peaceful protest and the right to freely determine their own future, must be respected,” Biden said./agencies

The European Union has lost its credibility in the eyes of Cypriot Turks, the Foreign Ministry of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said Tuesday.

Recent remarks by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, in which he rejected a two-state solution in Cyprus, are “very unfortunate” the ministry said in a statement.

“This unfortunate statement shows how unwilling and prejudiced the EU is to understand the just demands and wishes of the Turkish Cypriots. It is understood that the Union has built its vision on Cyprus, based on wrong assessments. As such, the EU is not in a position to decide what the solution model will be,” the statement said.

Reiterating that the EU made a historical mistake by unilaterally accepting the Greek Cypriot Administration as an EU member without waiting for an agreement on the Cyprus issue, the ministry emphasized that the EU chose its side on the Cyprus issue with this irreversible mistake.

“With the unwavering support of homeland Turkey, the TRNC will maintain its determined stance,” the statement added./aa

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson pushed a hugely controversial cut through parliament Tuesday to the UK’s foreign aid budget from 0.7% of gross national income to 0.5%.

The cut of around £4.4 billion ($6.07 billion) was passed by a majority of 35, with 333 votes to 298.

The cut was vehemently opposed by the charity and non-governmental sectors as well as the opposition Labour, Liberal Democrat and Scottish National parties, in addition to a sizeable number of Johnson’s own backbench members of parliament (MPs).

The government has said the cut is only temporary, but the tests it has set out before the cut can be reversed are highly restrictive.

Johnson insisted that this “was not an argument about principle – the only question is when we return to 0.7%.”

The 0.7% pledge is written into law, and upholding it was in the ruling Conservative Party’s 2019 manifesto – meaning to break it would require both a new law to be passed, as today, as well as breaking the manifesto promise.

Johnson told parliament that the COVID-19 pandemic has put Britain’s public finances under “greater strain than ever before in peacetime history.”

“Every pound we spend on aid has to be borrowed and, in fact, represents not our money, but money that we're taking from future generations,” he said.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak set out two tests before aid spending could return to 0.7%: the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) says that the government is not borrowing for day-to-day spending and that underlying debt is falling.

The OBR is an independent government body that provides independent economic forecasts and analysis of the public finances.

Former international development secretary Andrew Mitchell, a Conservative backbencher, said the government’s proposal was a “fiscal trap for the unwary” because the chancellor’s two tests had only been met once in the last 20 years.

Nevertheless, Johnson called on his MPs to “provide certainty for our aid budget and an affordable path back to 0.7% while also allowing for investment in other priorities, including the NHS [National Health Service], schools and the police.”

“As soon as circumstances allow and the tests are met, we will return to the target that unites us,” he said.

His predecessor, Theresa May, was scathing during the parliamentary debate.

“I have been in this house for nearly a quarter of a century. During that time, I have never voted against a three-line whip. As prime minister, I suffered at the hands of rebels… [but] we made a promise to the poorest people in the world. The government has broken that promise. This motion means that promise may be broken for years to come. With deep regret, I will vote against that motion today,” May said.

Tobias Ellwood, the Conservative chair of the defense committee, said: “There is a new global soft power war taking place. This to me is the face of a cold war that is slowly emerging that we in the west are yet to wake up to its reality…This is why we should not be diminishing our own soft power.”

Tom Tugendhat, the Conservative chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, also said he would not back the government.

Opposition Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: “Every living prime minister thinks this is wrong. There is only one prime minister prepared to do this, and he is sitting there.”/aa

The death toll in South Africa's violent protests against the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma has now risen to 72, according to authorities.

Police said late Tuesday that 1,234 people had been arrested for their role in rampant looting of businesses and destruction of property in both KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces.

Forty-five deaths were reported in Gauteng which includes Johannesburg and Pretoria, while 27 in KwaZulu-Natal.

Ten people were killed in a stampede in Soweto township near Johannesburg on Monday as they looted a mall.

According to authorities, other deaths and injuries were related to explosions of ATM machines that rioters attempted to break or died after shootings.

Violent riots and looting first broke out in the country last Thursday over the jailing of Zuma.

The protests that began in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal later spread to Johannesburg and have been ongoing for days.

Major shopping venues in the country's two most densely populated provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng have been ransacked and some set on fire.

Vehicles and trucks were also burned by groups of protesters calling for Zuma's release from prison.

Zuma, 79, started serving a prison term for contempt of court in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday night.

Minister of State Security Ayanda Dlodlo refuted claims that plans for violence had not been detected earlier due to neglect by her agency. She said her department played its part by sharing information with other security bodies.

"Intelligence has done the best it could do," she emphasized.

Dlodlo said she had received reports of possible attacks against foreign nationals in the country.

South Africa has previously witnessed several bouts of deadly xenophobic violence.

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday authorized the deployment of Defense Force personnel to support the police in restoring order.

He said the violence and looting were unprecedented in post-apartheid South Africa.

On Monday morning, police were seen in running battles with looters in the towns of Soweto and Eldorado, south of Johannesburg.

Protesters were seen fleeing with stolen goods, including electronics, food items, and even mattresses. Some were seen hurling stones at police, who responded with rubber bullets and stun grenades./agencies
