Palestine is not mentioned in the Quran, but 'Israel' is mentioned in it." This is one of the most common claims made by skeptics regarding the Muslims' relationship with Jerusalem and the holy land. In their view, this indicates – as Amnon Cohen claims, for example – that the sanctity of the holy land and Palestine in Islam has its sole source in the Torah. For this reason – according to this assertion – we do not find the name Palestine in the Holy Quran, but rather the name 'Israel.'

This point is one of the illogical paradoxes based on severe inadequacy and superficiality in examining the sacred texts.

On one hand, since when has mentioned a location or something in the Holy Quran been a sign of its sanctity?

Even if we accept this illogical reasoning, the name "Egypt" itself, for example, is mentioned in the Holy Quran four times (in addition to a dispute regarding a fifth mention in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 61, which is the word "misran"). Was Egypt considered a holy land, or was there a specific sanctity attributed to it in Islam? Likewise, the land of "Sheba" is mentioned twice in the Holy Quran, and a whole Surah is named after it, yet it is not a holy land and does not hold any special religious significance, whether general or specific, in Islam! Moreover, the name "Hell" is mentioned in the Holy Quran 77 times. Does that make Hell a land of sanctity?

On the other hand, the term "Israel" in the Quran does not refer even once to a piece of land or geographic territory; rather, it appears in 42 instances, 40 of which use the phrase "Bani Israel" (Children of Israel), and in two instances it is mentioned as "Israel" alone. In both cases, it does not refer to any land or region; instead, the Quran refers to a known group called "Bani Israel." In two instances, it refers to "Israel," the grandfather of the Children of Israel, who is known by most scholars of interpretation to be the Prophet of God Jacob, son of Isaac, peace be upon them both. I honestly do not understand the reasoning of those who consider that merely mentioning the name "Israel" – which is a person's name – could establish a right for any people to a piece of land or territory simply because they named it after this individual!

If we accept this logic, then Egypt must today hand over the city of Alexandria to Greece, because it is named after Alexander the Great, who was Greek. Not only that, but this would also be required of Australia, Canada, Italy, Romania, Scotland, Poland, the United States (which has 20 cities named "Alexandria"), Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, India, Brazil, Jamaica, and South Africa. Today, there are more than 50 cities in the world named "Alexandria." Does this really grant Greece the right to these cities and regions?

The mention of the names of places themselves in holy books does not create a right for nations over them except in terms of their sanctification, not in terms of ownership or necessarily imposing political sovereignty over them. Moreover, the illusion for oneself and the other party alike that the mere occurrence of a word in a holy book grants any entity the right to claim territory simply because this entity has exploited its name and imposed it on that territory is illogical in every sense.

The truth is that Palestine, even though it is not mentioned by name in the Holy Quran, is praised and honored by Allah, the Almighty, through the mention of attributes of blessing and sanctity associated with it and linking it to Him. When Allah, the Almighty, says: (To the land which We have blessed for the nations) (Al-Anbya:71) Thus, He raised this land above the rest of the lands and connected it to Him, for it is He who granted it this blessing. The blessing is the best attribute that can be described for the noble land of Palestine. Is there anything greater than that?

We often notice attempts by those opposed to the cause of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque to mix up the facts and undermine the sanctity of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by expanding on minor details, through which they try to obscure the foundation of the issue. They claim that the Al-Aqsa Mosque mentioned in the holy verse of "Al-Isra" – to which the night journey was made – is not the one that exists today in Jerusalem, but rather a mosque located in the village of Al-Ji'ranah, which is situated about 30 km northeast of the Sacred Mosque in Mecca.

This claim is constantly emphasized by Professor Mordechai Kedar, a professor at Bar-Ilan University known for its religious conservatism. It is also mentioned by the academic Uri Rubin, and preceding them all was the Orientalist Alfred Guillaume. Strangely, this assertion has found its way into some Arab writers like Youssef Zidan (who is a writer, not an academic), and it is echoed by some activists on social media without even referring back to its origins or reviewing it. It seems that a political agenda has played an important role here, as there is no way to explain why some of these individuals did not return to the original text to understand the basis of this claim. This assertion primarily relies on a narrative found in Al-Waqidi's famous book "Al-Maghazī," but a simple glance at Al-Waqidi's text exposes the shallow linguistic understanding that led these individuals to consider it evidence that Al-Aqsa Mosque is located in Al-Ji’ranah rather than in Jerusalem!

The text from Al-Waqidi describes the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) Umrah during his return from the siege of Ta’if while passing through Al-Ji'ranah: "When he intended to depart to Medina, he left from Al-Ji'ranah on the night of Wednesday, the twelfth night remaining from Dhul-Qi'dah. He assumed the Ihram from the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is at the valley beneath the far end of the valley, and that was the place where the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to pray when he was in Al-Ji'ranah. As for this nearby mosque, it was built by a man from Quraysh, and he made that wall next to him."

This text actually discusses a completely different issue. It is customary for al-Waqidi, in his book "Al-Maghazi," to explain to readers in his time the different prophetic sites as they were known in his era. In al-Waqidi's time, there were two mosques in the valley of Al-Ji'ranah; one was at the far end of the valley, and the other was at the lower end. People prayed in the mosque that was at the lower end of the valley (i.e., the mosque closest to the building in the village of Al-Ji'ranah during al-Waqidi's time), believing it was the place where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prayed when he entered the state of Ihram for the Umrah of Al-Ji'ranah. Al-Waqidi then comes to tell them that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not pray in this mosque; rather, he prayed in the mosque at the far end of the valley—i.e., the mosque that is farther from the buildings. He emphasizes this by mentioning that the nearby mosque, which people referred to in al-Waqidi's time, was built by a man from the Quraysh tribe and that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had no connection to it!

It is thus simply evident that those who engage in counter-propaganda are only concerned in this text with extracting the phrase "Al-Aqsa Mosque" to base their assumption that this is the mosque referred to in the Surah Al-Isra. In fact, Mordechai Kedar, when he asserts this in the media and in his lectures, claims that Al-Waqidi is the one who said this! Meanwhile, the text clearly refutes this shallow claim, and the only reason we can infer for their insistence on this assertion is, quite simply, their lack of proficiency in the Arabic language. Therefore, their linguistic weakness makes their action unsurprising; however, at the same time, what is shocking and surprising is the repetition of this flimsy claim by some Arabs who follow the orientalist narrative regarding Jerusalem, without any of them bothering to refer back to Al-Waqidi to read his words.

When it comes to the Night Journey and Ascension, which is considered one of the foundations of the Islamic relationship with Jerusalem, the Orientalist skeptical narrative that attempts to promote doubts about this issue ranges from outright denial of the occurrence of the entire story, claiming it to be merely a dream or a vision, to asserting a possible Jewish origin for this story! This narrative seeks to undermine the Islamic account by questioning the explicit Quranic text that mentions this incident by name, sometimes claiming that the Al-Aqsa Mosque mentioned in this verse is a mosque in the area of Al-Ji'ranah between Mecca and Taif, and at other times attributing the name of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in present-day Jerusalem to the Umayyads, claiming that they are the origin of this name and that they were the first to invent the concept of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

Skeptical Claims and Evidence:

The claim by some proponents of this narrative that the journey of Isra and Mi'raj was merely a dream attempts to trace it back to some of the noble companions, such as Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him). They rely on a narration attributed to Lady Aisha, in which she states: "The body of the Messenger of Allah was not lost, but Allah ascended his soul." Another narration attributed to Muawiya (may Allah be pleased with him) mentions that when he was asked about the Isra, he would say: "It was a true vision from Allah." Ibn Ishaq narrates both narrations in his biography.

Narrative Selectivity:

These individuals exploit these two narratives to use them as an explanation for the noble verse in Surah Al-Isra. (We granted the vision which We showed thee, but as a trial for men, - as also the Cursed Tree (mentioned) in the Qur'an: We put terror (and warning) into them, ) (Al-Isra:60) Here, the skeptics fall into the trap of selectivity in the narratives; they take the two mentioned narratives as the sole basis for this equation while neglecting two important facts. The first is that the vast majority of Muslim scholars in history, hadith, and interpretation have declared these two narratives to be fabricated (i.e., false) and not authentic regarding Aisha or Muawiya. Particularly since the narration attributed to Aisha appears in some versions with the wording “I did not find the body of the Messenger of Allah,” and it is well known that the Prophet, peace be upon him, married her in Medina and not in Mecca! Furthermore, Ibn Ishaq, when conveying this narration, transmitted it with a severe weakening formulation, saying: “Some of the family of Abu Bakr told me.” This is a known method used by Ibn Ishaq in conveying everything he presented from the perspective of academic integrity, and anyone who has studied the history and methodology of Ibn Ishaq is familiar with it.

Narrative Attribution Issues:

As for the narrative attributed to Muawiya, the person who transmitted this account in Ibn Ishaq's book (whose name is Yaqub ibn Utbah ibn al-Mughira) never actually saw him, as he died in the year 128 AH, and had not yet been born during Muawiya's time. He only met a few of the companions, such as Al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid, who was one of the younger companions, as mentioned by Al-Dhahabi in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala." Additionally, Muawiya himself converted to Islam in the year of the conquest, which was eight years after the Hijrah. Therefore, the narration itself is problematic because it discusses an event that took place more than ten years before Muawiya's conversion to Islam. How could Muawiya comment on this event while contradicting all the other companions who witnessed it as Muslims?

Clarification by Ibn Abbas:

As for that verse, Ibn Abbas, the interpreter of the Quran, would clarify it by saying: "It was a vision that was shown to the Messenger of Allah on the night he was taken on the night journey." He is knowledgeable in the Arabic language that was used at that time, and he comes to clarify the Quranic text in the language that was used in his era. Then, someone who does not know the language of the Quran in our time comes to take the wording from the 21st century.

Western Academic Perspective:

The amazing thing is that the majority of Western academics who say this are not Arabs at all. Yet, they expect us to disregard the words of those who revealed the Holy Qur'an in their era and in their language and daily dialect, and accept instead the interpretations of today's Orientalist narrators... Is this reasonable?!

Quranic Text and Amazement:

More importantly, the Quranic text itself states that this matter is amazing because the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Isra begins with glorification accompanied by astonishment. (Glory to (Allah) Who did take His servant for a journey by night) (Al-Isra:1) How can the human mind accept that amazement, glorification, and astonishment are needed for a dream that one of us today finds much stranger, which is supported by the numerous narratives found in Islamic sources that discuss the disbelief of the Quraysh regarding the story and their astonishment at it? If it was just a dream, could it really be a source of amazement and disapproval in Meccan society?

Skeptical Orientalism:

The clear selectivity in the work of the proponents of skeptical Orientalism is, in itself, a weakness of this narrative, as it relies on the assumption that the opposing side is unaware of the existence of many narratives and texts that expose this selectivity in the choice of texts.
