Human rights lawyer faces legal charges over anti-torture draft law

13:33 06 March 2016 Author :
A human rights lawyer is facing accusations of forming an illegal law firm after he proposed an anti-torture law to the president's office.
Negad al-Boraie is facing accusations of forming an “unlicensed entity” and “inciting resistance to authorities”, according to the United Group, Attorneys at Law and Legal Advisers.
The judge appointed by the Justice Ministry also accused Boraie of reporting false news and disturbing public security, the group said in a statement on Friday. It added that the judge released Boraie to his residence pending investigations.
Reports of prison torture have been on the rise since the election of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in 2014, something denied by the Interior Ministry.
Several human rights advocates critical of alleged security violations have either been banned from travel, or denied entry to the country, or prosecuted.
