Police clear migrant camp in western France

Police on Thursday evicted hundreds of migrants and refugees from a makeshift camp at the Daviais square in Nantes, western France.

The move comes a day after the administrative court of Nantes ruled in favor of the expulsion of the nearly 600 migrants and refugees who have been camping in the center of Nantes for months.

The camp residents were sent to temporary accommodation in the city, according to local authorities.

Police conducted a similar operation in July involving nearly 450 people occupying the streets of the city.

The Interior Ministry has already carried out nearly 41 such evacuation operations since 2015, clearing out more than 33,000 migrants.

Many of the migrants are reportedly requesting asylum in the EU country where they were first registered under the Dublin convention.

France received a record 100,000 asylum applications last year and offered refugee status to only 30,000 people.

Nearly 14,900 were forcibly expelled. According to a report published by French NGO the Cimade in June, France is turning away more and more migrants.
